Chapter 18: The Mountain Road Is Tough After the Rain
“Damn it! Since we didn’t get any useful information by listening, then get something useful out of these mouths!”
The rain was finally easing up. Jiang Yu put away her gun and turned back to the wooden cabin, planning to take a good bath first.
She hadn’t really paid attention earlier, being too busy dealing with the Japanese soldiers.
Now that she stopped, her clothes were soaked and clung to her body, making her skin crawl with goosebumps from the cold.
It was still cold in February; catching a cold now would be a real problem.
Fortunately, there was a big pot of boiling water Liang Mengwen had prepared earlier for making soup in her space.
Jiang Yu dug out the original owner’s large bathtub from the space.
She poured in the hot water, added some cold water to adjust the temperature, and luxuriated in a nice bath.
While soaking, she also washed the clothes she had worn these past days.
Too bad the weather wasn’t good for drying clothes now, so she put them back into the space to dry later.
“How is it? Did you get anything useful out of them?”
After tidying up and heading outside, Jiang Yu looked down at the nearly broken Japanese soldiers on the ground, then smiled slyly at Liang Mengwen and asked.
“Yes, it matches what I suspected before. These guys were a vanguard squad sent from General Mountain to support the front troops.
Their job was to clear obstacles on the road ahead to open a path for the supply convoy behind them.
But after a skirmish with the Sichuan army a couple of days ago, they got lost while chasing a squad of Sichuan soldiers.
They wandered around, lost their way near here, and upon seeing smoke on this mountainside, decided to come rob the place…”
“Ask them what they did while lost on the way.”
Thinking about the initial sight of the bellyband and ears, Jiang Yu cut off Liang Mengwen’s endless chatter.
“Ah? Oh! Right away.”
Seeing Jiang Yu’s grim expression and the brutal aura radiating from her, Liang Mengwen quickly turned and interrogated the Japanese soldiers again.
Luckily, by now they had completely given up resisting.
They answered everything without hesitation.
“They said they didn’t do much on the way, just got tired and rested when they found a village.”
“Just rested?”
“Uh… I asked again.” Liang Mengwen didn’t understand why Jiang Yu looked so grim and radiated such a terrifying murderous aura.
After applying some more pressure on the Japanese soldiers, Liang Mengwen finally got the information Jiang Yu wanted.
It turned out the lost squad had, exhausted and hungry, accidentally stumbled into a village.
The villagers, seeing the armed soldiers, were so scared that they gave them whatever they wanted.
The village chief even let them stay in his house.
They were served comfortably, hoping the soldiers would spare the village.
Unfortunately!
After eating and drinking their fill, the soldiers didn’t leave.
Instead, they complained the village had no entertainment and demanded the village girls serve them.
Anyone who resisted was shot on the spot.
Even the village chief was killed just for hesitating.
Seeing this, the villagers had no choice but to hand over several girls to appease them.
But the soldiers’ real goal was all the girls in the village.
When the villagers refused, the soldiers forcibly went house to house and gathered all girls aged nine and older.
In front of the entire village, they assaulted these girls.
They took pleasure in watching the villagers’ pain.
After they were done, they killed all the girls.
Before leaving, they set the whole village on fire…
“Damn it! Where’s the supply convoy?”
Damn Japanese!
Jiang Yu gritted her teeth, regretting letting some of them escape earlier.
But now it was definitely impossible to find them.
“They said when they left, the convoy had already reached Zhenjiang.
According to the route, if nothing unexpected happened, the convoy should be close to Chenwu Town now…”
Feeling Jiang Yu’s aura growing even more violent and brutal, Liang Mengwen cautiously thought for a moment before carefully replying.
“Do you know where Chenwu Town is?”
“Yes, it’s quite far from here. Driving would take about…”
“No driving!”
All the military vehicles in her space had been seized from the Japanese soldiers. Right now, with a battle about to break out outside, going openly on the main roads would be like walking targets.
“Well, then the mountain roads will do — we can bypass the four mountains behind…”
“Enough! Don’t tell me. Just lead the way.”
Even if she tried to find the way herself, she’d only waste time.
“By the way, have you asked everything you needed to?”
“All done.”
“Then take those guys far away and kill them.”
“Huh? Ah!”
Seeing Jiang Yu’s fierce expression, Liang Mengwen didn’t dare argue and hurriedly dragged the Japanese soldiers far off to kill them, then came back to lead the way.
“Let’s go!”
“Roger!”
…
The mountain roads after the rain were really tough.
They pushed hard for almost two whole days, carefully picking their way over the slippery, uneven terrain.
Before the sun set, Jiang Yu finally arrived at Chenwu Town.
Unfortunately, the Japanese convoy had already left early that morning.
No time to rest.
Jiang Yu immediately spent half a gold bar in town to buy a donkey. She quickly mounted it and told Liang Mengwen to lead it, speeding off in pursuit.
No other choice!
After the grueling two days of travel, her body was barely holding up.
Her feet… definitely had blisters.
Every step was like stabbing pain.
The last stretch was pure grit and endurance.
Once she was on the donkey’s back, Jiang Yu quickly slipped off her shoes.
Sure enough!
There was a big blister on the sole of one foot.
She fetched some water from the space and carefully rinsed it.
Enduring the pain, she popped the blister and applied some medicine she had bought earlier in town.
That made her feel much better.
“Master, your feet… maybe we should find a place to rest for a while?
Those Japanese carrying supplies can’t move fast anyway. It’ll be fine to catch up once your feet recover…”
Seeing Jiang Yu so boldly take off her shoes and reveal her bare feet without any bandages, Liang Mengwen once again reassured himself that resting her earlier had been the right call.
He hurriedly looked for an excuse to persuade Jiang Yu to stop and rest.
No choice!
He was once a pampered young master himself. Even after his family fell, with the dowry from the original owner supporting him, he had never really suffered.
So now his feet probably had two big blisters as well.
Every step was excruciating.
Yet he didn’t dare stop to rest.
That’s why he could only try to convince Jiang Yu to rest.
“Alright! Let’s find a place to rest inside that forest ahead.”
February nights got dark early, and in her current condition, chasing down the Japanese soldiers and fighting wasn’t very practical.
Jiang Yu hesitated only briefly before deciding to wait for her feet to recover before moving on.
