We’re already in the Republican era—how can falling in love compare to killing Japanese devils? Chapter 4

Chapter 4: She May Be Cautious, But She Bears Grudges

As soon as she entered the inner courtyard—

The surroundings were dimly lit and mostly quiet.

Good. There was no one near the wall, and the lighting was low.

Perfect for doing something big.

Jiang Yu nodded in satisfaction.

The only problem was, the ventilation windows on her ex-husband’s wall were quite high.

Given her current body’s height of barely 155 centimeters, she had trouble reaching them—especially when it came to throwing things out.

After thinking for a moment, Jiang Yu simply pulled a small stool out of her space and placed it beneath one of the vent windows.

She stepped on it and tested the angle.

Nice!

Although it still felt a little awkward and not easy to get the right momentum, it was a big improvement from before.

Plus, she was strong and had decent aim, so she wasn’t worried about missing her target.

Just as she was adjusting to the height, she glanced out through the vent.

She saw several Japanese soldiers huddled together, seemingly in discussion—but their eyes kept darting toward the main gate.

Wait… were they planning to run?

Not happening!

Jiang Yu didn’t dare delay any longer. She pulled out several grenades from her space all at once.

After fumbling with them clumsily for a bit, she finally managed to pull the pins.

Then she quickly stuck her arm through the vent window and—awkward though it was—hurled the grenades toward the group of Japanese soldiers.

Suddenly—

“BOOM—”
“BOOM—”
“BOOM BOOM BOOM—”

Several explosions rang out in rapid succession, accompanied by screams and gunfire.

After mentally counting down the grenade delay time, Jiang Yu didn’t bother to check the results.

She simply grabbed her stool and ran to the next vent window.

There, she repeated the process—more grenades out the window.

But suddenly—

“Ahhh! G-G-Ghost!”

Just as Jiang Yu was running toward the fourth window, carrying her stool and preparing to throw another grenade, a panicked scream nearly made her fumble.

The grenade—already unpinned—almost dropped to the floor!

Damn it!

She had forgotten to put the stool back into her space before running.

Her invisibility skill doesn’t apply to anything that leaves her body and is then picked up again—unless she puts it back into the space and re-summons it.

Only then would the object also become invisible again.

Looking at the servant nearby, terrified by the sight of a floating stool—

Jiang Yu quickly chucked the grenade blindly out the window, ditched the stool, and bolted for a darker, quieter corner.

But she hadn’t gotten far when she ran right into her ex-husband, leading a group of servants rushing toward the front courtyard.

Uh-oh…

Jiang Yu hesitated for only a second, then quickly tagged along at the back of the group, banking on the fact that her invisibility still had time left.

She wanted to follow them to see what kind of shady deal her ex-husband had with the Japanese—

And also to check whether those Japanese bastards were dead yet.

If not, she could always toss in another grenade or two for good measure.

But unexpectedly, as soon as they passed through the moon gate, the group stopped moving forward.

Frustrated and stuck in the back, her small size blocked from seeing anything, Jiang Yu had no choice but to carefully peek her head out to see what was happening in the front courtyard.

And the moment she did—

She saw multiple gun barrels pointed directly in her direction!

What the hell?! Had she been discovered? Or… had she misunderstood everything? Maybe her ex-husband wasn’t a traitor after all?

But then—

“XXXXXX Taikun XXXXX…”

As she was wondering, she heard her ex-husband speaking flatteringly in Japanese to the people ahead.

Even though she didn’t understand a word of it, the tone was pure obsequiousness.

And the Japanese on the other side, though not lowering their guns, responded to him in Japanese as well.

Well, that settles it!

Her ex-husband really was the same despicable traitor she thought he was.

And not all the Japanese had died either.

Now what?

She sure as hell wasn’t going to let these bastards get away…

Especially since once she left this place, with her terrible sense of direction and severe face-blindness, even if she bumped into them again—

She probably wouldn’t recognize them at all.

Her ex-husband might be okay—she had the original host’s memories.

But as for those Japanese soldiers? She wouldn’t know them from a hole in the wall next time.

Wait a minute!

Out of the corner of her eye, she once again spotted those vent windows on the wall—and a thought struck her.

The Japanese soldiers had their guns aimed in this direction, which meant…

There was a serious lack of trust between them and her ex-husband’s people.

So if she just caused a little chaos—

Her ex-husband and the Japanese would probably start turning on each other.

And when that happened? There was no way people wouldn’t die.

Say no more!

Jiang Yu slipped back behind the moon gate, confirmed no one else was around, then pulled another grenade from her space.

She carefully pulled the pin, waited a few seconds, then peeked out and hurled it in the direction of the Japanese.

Suddenly—

“BOOM—”

The familiar sound of an explosion rang out again.

“Bakayaro! How dare you ambush the Imperial Army! You’re a bad, bad one! Kill him—!”

“It wasn’t me! Please listen to me, Taikun… Ah! Quick! Cover me—retreat… retreat!”

The angry shouting was soon replaced by a barrage of gunfire and agonized screams.

Jiang Yu, terrified, didn’t stop running until she was far away, still feeling shaken.

That was so close!

A stray bullet had whizzed right past her ear.

If she hadn’t happened to trip on a rock and stumbled sideways—

She would’ve been shot!

Wuwuwu…

As expected!

She still hadn’t been careful enough!

Looks like she’d have to be even more cautious in the future.

After all, only if the green hills survive can she chop down more little Japanese devils…

Taking a deep breath and glancing at the now chaotic inner courtyard,

Jiang Yu didn’t even check the results of the chaos she caused. Instead, with a fire in her heart, she planned to literally add fuel to the fire.

She pulled out cooking oil and liquor she had collected earlier from the kitchen, stored in her space.

Then she quietly began splashing it onto the various wooden buildings in the courtyard.

Once all the oil and liquor were used up,

She quickly went to the backyard, found a hidden corner, and climbed over the wall to escape.

Then she lit several torches she had brought with her and hurled them forcefully into the courtyard—

Without even looking back, she turned and left.

Hmph!

They occupied her belongings and even planned to sell her off.

And just now they had scared her out of her wits.

If she hadn’t been pressed for time, she wouldn’t have settled for just setting a fire…

It was pitch-black before dawn, and the light inside the courtyard didn’t reach beyond its walls.

Jiang Yu, already on edge, got momentarily distracted and accidentally took the wrong path.

By the time she realized it, she had circled right back to the front gate of her ex-husband’s house.

By now, the gunfire inside had become scattered and sporadic. She wasn’t sure exactly what was happening.

But the Japanese soldiers had already carried out several large crates.

Seeing that only two soldiers were left guarding them,

Jiang Yu figured—she was already here, might as well go all the way. She steeled herself and pulled out a padlock and a rolling pin from her space. Then she smashed the two men over the head.

“Yeah! Bullseye!”

When the two men collapsed on the spot,

Jiang Yu rushed over, quickly stored the crates, a few Japanese tricycles, and even a military truck into her space.

Then turned to run out of town.

But—!

“Urgh—”

She had barely gone a few steps, feeling triumphant,

When her stomach suddenly churned, and Jiang Yu doubled over, vomiting out everything she had stolen and eaten earlier at the Liang household.

Damn it!

It was just killing two Japanese soldiers!

Just now she wasn’t scared at all—in fact, she’d felt excited and even wished she could kill a few more.

So why the hell was she throwing up?

Clearly, this time felt different from the previous two episodes. Jiang Yu was now thoroughly annoyed.

Wait a second!

Could it be she ate something spoiled?

Or caught a chill?

But that shouldn’t be…

After vomiting, she rinsed her mouth and finally began to feel a bit better. But then her now-empty stomach began to send hunger signals that nearly made her cry.

Do you know how hard it was to fight a cat for food? And now it was all gone.

Now what?

Hearing the commotion behind her getting louder, Jiang Yu could only grit her teeth, ignore her hunger, and continue running out of town.

Thankfully!

Qingyao Town wasn’t big, and her ex-husband’s house was at the very edge. Plus, she still had the original host’s memories.

It only took her a little over ten minutes to make her way out of town.

By now, the sky was starting to lighten.

Looking back, she saw flames rising high from her ex-husband’s home.

Clutching her wildly pounding heart, Jiang Yu climbed onto the Japanese tricycle she had just acquired and sped off down the main road without a second glance.

She kept going until she was far, far away. Just as her invisibility skill was about to wear off,

She spotted people beginning to appear on the road in the distance. Jiang Yu quickly stopped, packed away the trike,

Then slipped into the forest by the roadside.

She casually found a sheltered spot to rest, eating a little to fill her stomach,

Planning to wait until her invisibility cooldown ended.

But once she sat down,

She realized just how exhausted her body really was.

So tired she could barely hold food in her hands.

Well—what could you expect?

This body was used to doing nothing all day, never stepping outside.

Her physical condition was terrible.

After running around nonstop for a whole day and night, the only reason she made it this far was sheer willpower—or so Jiang Yu thought.
