Chapter 9: Scorched Earth
Jiang Yu knew very well that the Japanese base was nearby.
But without anyone to lead her, she was helpless.
In the end, with no other option, she decided to take advantage of the fact that most of the Japanese soldiers in Niu’er Village were out searching for their “missing” equipment.
Jiang Yu turned invisible and returned to Niu’er Village, planning to see if there was anything left to loot.
At the same time, she wanted to look for Liang Mengwen.
Once inside,
because Japanese soldiers were patrolling all around, Jiang Yu worried that every door would be locked, and during broad daylight she might end up empty-handed.
Unexpectedly, after entering, she found that the Japanese soldiers had actually removed all the doors and instead hung two cloths with typical Japanese style.
Hey!
Wasn’t this heaven-sent help?
Without any concerns about doors anymore, Jiang Yu happily started checking one room after another.
If there was no one inside, she would enter and take whatever she could—whether a piece of paper, a pen, a rag, or a broom.
As long as it could fit into her spatial pocket, she took it, useful or not.
She aimed to leave the Japanese soldiers with nothing but four walls they couldn’t carry away.
“Eh? This is the kitchen! And there’s a large grain warehouse! Haha, awesome…”
While rummaging around, Jiang Yu soon found the Japanese kitchen.
She recalled how Yang Ergou and the others had awkwardly talked while their stomachs occasionally growled in hunger.
She had been worried that although her spatial pocket seemed to hold a lot of food, it would be insufficient to supply an entire military camp.
Now with food right in front of her, she wasn’t going to miss this opportunity.
Even though there was a Japanese soldier dozing in a corner of the kitchen,
and two others outside the warehouse guarding with guns,
Jiang Yu hesitated only briefly.
Wearing gloves, she quickly covered the soldier’s mouth and teleported him into her spatial pocket.
Then she immediately released him.
In just an instant, that Japanese soldier was dead as dead could be.
Perfect!
Although she regretted not being able to enter her spatial pocket herself (which would have helped compensate for her weak defense and limited invisibility duration),
she had to admit that the spatial pocket’s inability to store living things was a killer feature for killing and looting…
Leaving the dead Japanese soldier behind, Jiang Yu immediately resumed her “scorched earth” mode.
She stuffed everything in sight into her spatial pocket, resolutely leaving the Japanese soldiers not a shred.
From heavy water jars to pots on the stove that were still cooking food,
even the Japanese soldiers’ equipment and the chairs they sat on—
until finally only four walls and an empty stove remained.
She was about to turn and head to the warehouse behind,
when a familiar queasy feeling in her stomach suddenly overwhelmed her.
Jiang Yu held back as long as she could but eventually quietly vomited everything up before feeling better.
Damn it!
That same familiar feeling again.
She had sworn eternal hatred against the Japanese soldiers, and every time she killed them, there was no problem…
Wait!
Jiang Yu suddenly realized that these bouts of vomiting were not only related to the Japanese soldiers,
but appeared only after seeing the corpses she had killed.
So…
Was she allergic to the corpses of the Japanese soldiers she had slain?
Damn!
How could there be such a bizarre allergy reason?
Was this some kind of punishment for her not having romantic love in her romance novel life, instead always pulling her sword to kill the Japanese?
Jiang Yu instantly understood the truth; the feeling was too clear.
Silently, she gave the sky a middle finger.
So, what should she do next?
She couldn’t really vomit every time she killed a Japanese soldier, could she?
That’d be ridiculous!
Maybe…
She could always teleport their bodies into her spatial pocket and let the pocket “kill” them, so she wouldn’t feel nauseous temporarily.
Then after she was safe, she could throw the corpses out and vomit all at once—big deal.
But what if she couldn’t use the spatial pocket to kill them?
Like when using a gun?
Uh… looks like she just had to bear it herself for now.
Fortunately, when she was nervous, the allergy-like nausea was less intense.
Like before, the vomiting happened after she relaxed…
Looks like she had no choice for now.
After vomiting, rinsing her mouth, Jiang Yu hurriedly left the kitchen.
At that moment, the two Japanese soldiers outside the warehouse were leisurely smoking and chatting, laughing with ugly grins.
Jiang Yu carefully checked around, making sure no one else was there.
She quickly approached the two Japanese soldiers, placing her hands simultaneously on both their bodies.
With a thought, the two soldiers instantly disappeared.
Jiang Yu deliberately didn’t check inside her spatial pocket; sure enough, that familiar nausea didn’t come.
Haha!
She really was a genius!
No mere plot or story could stop her determination to kill the Japanese soldiers…
Jiang Yu happily turned and quickly entered the warehouse.
“Whoa…”
At first, she thought there wouldn’t be much inside the warehouse,
after all, Niu’er Village was just a small temporary outpost!
But to her surprise, the small warehouse had been dug at least ten meters deep.
Inside, tightly packed, were box after box, bag after bag, all kinds of food.
“Damn! Could this be one of the Japanese soldiers’ food storage warehouses?”
Jiang Yu smiled broadly as she stuffed items into her spatial pocket,
randomly estimating how many people this food could feed and for how long.
But just when she was halfway done collecting, she suddenly noticed behind a pile of boxes Liang Mengwen was eating greedily.
Next to the boxes was a hole, revealing cans of luncheon meat inside.
“You’re hiding here! You made me wait so long!”
“Ah—”
“Fairy… Fairy, you came, I… I didn’t mean to avoid you.
I was just trapped here, and I happened to be hungry…”
Sob—
He hadn’t even had a drop of water for over a day!
How unlucky to be caught in the act just opening a can!
Startled by Jiang Yu’s sudden voice, Liang Mengwen almost dropped the can in his hands, feeling like crying but unable to.
“I’m not some kind of fairy. Whatever! Hurry up and eat, after you finish I still have to check other places.”
Seeing Liang Mengwen’s pitiful look, Jiang Yu felt no sympathy at all.
After quickly finishing looting the rest of the warehouse,
she casually pulled out a piece of unknown cloth from her spatial pocket.
She wrapped it around Liang Mengwen, then picked him up and tried to turn invisible.
Sure enough!
As expected, she could treat him like a portable item and become invisible together with him.
“Fairy… Fairy, wait! I know where there’s some good stuff.”
Carried in Jiang Yu’s hands and feeling no safety, Liang Mengwen quickly tried to flatter her.
“Fine, you show me the way later.”
Without wasting words, Jiang Yu tore two small holes in the cloth so Liang Mengwen could see the way.
Following his directions, they soon reached the entrance to another underground warehouse.
Facing two guards at the door, Jiang Yu looked at the “Liang Mengwen-brand package” in her hands.
Relaxing her grip, amid the three shocked Japanese soldiers’ gazes, she quickly placed her hands on the two guards.
In an instant!
Before the “Liang Mengwen-brand package” even hit the ground, the two Japanese soldiers had already been teleported into her spatial pocket, lying stiff.
Haha!
Awesome!
Ignoring the now inactive invisibility skill of the “Liang Mengwen-brand package,”
she entered the warehouse. Looking at all the Japanese soldiers’ clothes, shoes, socks, quilts, and such inside,
Jiang Yu gave a pleased glance at Liang Mengwen who had escaped from the package and clumsily followed her in.
Once again, she began her “scorched earth” looting spree.
Suddenly!
“Baka yarou—”
“XXXX……”
“We’re doomed! We’ve been discovered!”
“What are they yelling about?”
“They said they’re going to lock down the entire village…”
“Lock down? Let’s go! Hurry!”
Just as she finished looting the warehouse, Jiang Yu was remaking the “Liang Mengwen brand package,” preparing to head to the next loot point,
when suddenly chaos erupted outside the warehouse.
Jiang Yu didn’t hesitate, grabbed Liang Mengwen, and rushed outside.
Fortunately, though chaotic, the Japanese soldiers outside hadn’t started shooting.
This made Jiang Yu breathe a huge sigh of relief since her biggest fear was stray bullets.
As long as no one fired, relying on her invisibility skill, she could easily slip out of Niu’er Village.
However!
She had originally planned to keep the momentum going and loot the nearby Japanese base,
but unexpectedly, her invisibility time ran out without her noticing.
Jiang Yu’s expression changed; she had to temporarily change plans and check the nearby 66th Army camp.
Without invisibility’s cover, they encountered several groups of Japanese soldiers after crossing just one mountain.
To make matters worse, a sudden brief downpour earlier had made the already difficult mountain paths even more slippery and hard to walk on.
“No way! I can’t keep going like this. At least I have to find a place to change out of these wet clothes first…”
Just as she was thinking this, dense footsteps suddenly approached from ahead.
Seeing that hiding was no longer possible, Jiang Yu prepared to jump down the hillside.
Suddenly, a hand reached out from the side, pulling her back with force.
Jiang Yu felt everything go dark in front of her eyes as a blood-smelling big hand instantly covered her mouth.
“Shh! We’re friends, don’t make a sound.”
“Uncle Yang Ergou? It’s you! What are you guys doing here?”
After her eyes adjusted to the dim light, Jiang Yu realized she was in a small cave.
Inside, the team led by Yang Ergou was all present, though each one was injured and looked utterly miserable.
“We just received news that the Japanese here had some movements. Our superiors sent us to check it out.”
After the footsteps outside receded, Yang Ergou finally released Jiang Yu, collapsing to the ground exhausted.
