What Childhood Sweetheart? The Abstinent Powerholder Is Irresistibly Flirtatious Chapter 17

Chapter 17: Afraid of Death

After Jiang Yanci had been driving for about half an hour, he noticed Wen Jiu staring blankly out the window in boredom, so he asked,

“Do you know how to drive?”

Wen Jiu turned to look at him. Although she didn’t quite understand why Jiang Yanci was asking this, she still answered truthfully,

“I got my driver’s license, but I rarely drive myself.”

She paused, then seemed to realize something and questioned him suspiciously,

“You’re not planning to let me drive, are you?”

Jiang Yanci didn’t respond. He simply pulled the car over to the side of the road.

Qi Qin and the others drove past, saw what was happening, rolled down their window, and asked,

“Yanci-ge, what’s going on?”

Jiang Yanci lifted his chin, signaling, “You guys go ahead first.”

For some reason, Qi Qin instinctively glanced at Wen Jiu, who was leaning against the front passenger seat window. But seeing her innocent expression, he couldn’t read anything from it.

Left with no choice, Qi Qin and the others had to leave first.

Once their car was out of sight, Jiang Yanci pulled out the car key and walked over to the front passenger side, dangling the key in front of Wen Jiu.

“You drive.”

“Tsk…” Wen Jiu asked in disbelief, “Are you serious?”

Jiang Yanci raised an eyebrow, offering no clear response.

Wen Jiu laughed, “You’re really not afraid of dying, huh?”

Even she didn’t trust her own driving skills.

But Jiang Yanci looked completely relaxed. “It’s fine. This road doesn’t have any sharp turns. And with me here, what e you afraid of?”

Hearing that, Wen Jiu stared at him seriously for a long time. Just as Jiang Yanci thought she wouldn’t respond, she casually tossed out two words sharp enough to make someone choke.

“Afraid. Of dying!”

Jiang Yanci: “…”

He lowered his eyes, watching Wen Jiu take the key and examine it. A wave of unfamiliar joy surged in his heart.

Everything this girl did made him happy.

“Relax, with me here, you won’t die.”

“I’m not worried about you—I don’t trust myself,” Wen Jiu said, though she was already opening the car door and jumping out, the eager expression on her face showing she wasn’t actually resisting the idea.

The Wen family was extremely cautious about her safety, so normally she was chauffeured by drivers with excellent skills.

She had once tried driving herself, but the first time she hit the road, she smashed the car’s front so badly it was full of dents. After that, the Wen family was reluctant to let her drive again.

Later on, she even asked Jian Yue to teach her, but he felt that since the family had drivers—and if not, there was still him—there was no need for Wen Jiu to learn.

And so the matter was dropped.

Now… Wen Jiu gripped the steering wheel nervously, staring straight ahead like she was heading to her doom.

Her expression made Jiang Yanci laugh out loud. “Left foot is brake, right foot is gas—you know that, right?”

There was undisguised amusement in his voice. Wen Jiu glanced at him sideways. “Of course I know.”

She wasn’t that clueless.

“Then let’s go,” Jiang Yanci said casually.

Wen Jiu: “…”

The car Wen Jiu was driving was a manual, so after starting it, she cautiously stayed in first gear and inched forward.

Luckily, the road was just like Jiang Yanci said—no sharp turns, no other vehicles passing by.

Along the way, Jiang Yanci quietly kept her company. Whenever her steering began to veer off course, he would gently adjust the wheel to correct her.

Once she steadied, he’d hand the wheel back to her and explain how to better control the direction.

His voice was slow and low, laced with a faint smile, as if he found it endearing that Wen Jiu couldn’t really drive. The corners of his lips never fell.

Time ticked by. It wasn’t until Wen Jiu grew unsatisfied with driving in first gear and stepped on the gas to shift up that he finally spoke again:

“Once you get the feel for it, you’ll become more confident.”

Wen Jiu let out a breath, inexplicably a little proud. “It’s actually quite easy.”

There was no familiar person standing anxiously by the roadside watching her, no barrage of abrupt commands she couldn’t keep up with. Although her nerves were still taut, her mood was relaxed.

Jiang Yanci’s gaze lingered on the dimple at the corner of her mouth before he looked away, offering praise without hesitation.

“Because you’re smart.”

Wen Jiu turned her head and glanced at him, momentarily dazed by the unguarded gentleness in his deep, dark eyes. The next second, she quickly looked away, pretending not to have noticed anything.

“Thanks for the compliment.”

With Jiang Yanci’s guidance, Wen Jiu’s driving skills improved rapidly.

When they encountered a car ahead of them, Jiang Yanci reminded her, “Honk.”

Wen Jiu did as told.

Jiang Yanci continued, “Left signal, accelerate and shift up to overtake, then switch to the right signal.”

Wen Jiu followed his instructions, her hands moving swiftly. In one smooth sequence, the car ahead was left far behind.

“No wonder I’m so great.” She grinned in satisfaction. Jiang Yanci didn’t correct her immediately. Instead, he waited until the excitement of her first overtake faded before calmly saying:

“People on the road won’t always give way. In that case, observe the situation and make your move decisively.”

“Got it,” Wen Jiu answered obediently.

Though she became much more skilled, by the time the two of them arrived, the others had already been waiting for over half an hour.

Wen Jiu felt a bit embarrassed. As she got out of the car and saw people watching them, she was just about to apologize, but Jiang Yanci had already stepped beside her.

“Let’s go,” he said casually.

Just those two indifferent words were enough to make everyone who arrived early stand up instantly.

In their circle, friends were friends, but if someone didn’t understand basic etiquette, that was a different matter.

Seeing this, Wen Jiu realized that Jiang Yanci’s status in Gangcheng was even higher than she had imagined.

On her first day in Gangcheng, Wen Yuyu had sent her a detailed summary of the city’s power dynamics.

As known to regular folks like Shen Chun and the others, the Jiang family was dominant in Gangcheng—a force not to be provoked.

But beyond that common knowledge, Jiang Yanci’s personal status far surpassed the family name.

Jiang Yanci wasn’t just powerful—he was untouchable. The Jiang family’s current standing owed much to his efforts.

But Jiang Yanci was Jiang Yanci, and Wen Jiu was still Wen Jiu.

Once they approached Qi Qin and the others, Wen Jiu offered an apologetic smile:

“Sorry, I was the one driving. I’m still a bit shaky behind the wheel, so we took a little longer. Sorry to keep you waiting.”

“Oh, that’s all it was?” Qi Qin waved it off nonchalantly. “Even if you’d come half an hour later, no one would’ve said anything.”

After all, Jiang Yanci was with her. Who’d dare complain?

Although Qi Qin didn’t spell it out, Wen Jiu understood—it was all because of Jiang Yanci.

After apologizing again, Wen Jiu was pulled aside by Mu Ling.

As Mu Ling tugged her away, she suddenly felt a chill crawl up the back of her neck, prompting her to speed up.

She didn’t let go until they were a good ten meters away by a swing set.

“Sit,” she said, motioning to Wen Jiu, then pushed off her toes, and the swing began to sway.
