Although he didn’t want to admit it, at this moment, all of Jian Yue’s self-assuredness shattered completely.
He began to realize that Wen Jiu was truly angry.
They had been together for such a long time, and while Wen Jiu had a proud personality, she had always been straightforward about any unhappiness, rarely resorting to silence.
So why was she doing this now? Was it because she no longer wanted to be with him?
The pain in his chest intensified the moment that thought crossed his mind, squeezing his heart, his eyes filled with tears, and his hands trembling uncontrollably.
Jian Yue stumbled back to his car, his trembling hands mechanically dialing Wen Jiu’s number again and again.
He didn’t know how much time had passed, but the spare phone in the passenger seat began vibrating.
It was probably Lin Anlan calling his backup phone after being unable to get through to his main one.
But Jian Yue had no intention of answering the call.
He stared vacantly at the dimly lit parking lot in front of him, feeling like his heart was being squeezed tighter and tighter by an invisible hand.
His chest was heavy, his mind was clouded, and his eyes stung so badly that blinking felt like an effort, but his mind remained empty.
Jian Yue thought about driving to Wen Jiu’s house to find her, but then realized that even holding the steering wheel felt like too much effort…
He had underestimated how much he loved Wen Jiu.
In the few seconds Jian Yue was lost in this realization, Lu Ming’s call came through. Jian Yue quickly answered, and the first thing he said was:
“Help me.”
On the other end of the line, Lu Ming was momentarily stunned before sighing.
“Where are you?”
After telling Lu Ming his location, Jian Yue seemed to finally have an outlet for his emotions and murmured in pain:
“I can’t get in touch with A-Jiu. I didn’t expect it to turn out like this. She must be really upset, that’s why she doesn’t want to talk to me.”
While heading towards Jian Yue’s location, Lu Ming mocked him, “You didn’t ‘not know,’ you were just greedy.”
“What exactly did Wen Jiu do wrong for you to treat her like this? Jian Yue, if it weren’t for our shared childhood, I’d definitely stomp on you for betraying Wen Jiu.”
Lu Ming really couldn’t fathom the meaning behind Jian Yue’s infidelity.
In terms of looks, while Wen Jiu wasn’t in the same league as Lin Anlan, she was definitely no worse.
In terms of family background, the Wen family, while not overly powerful, had developed well in recent years.
Lin Anlan couldn’t even compare to Wen Jiu.
As for talent, while Lin Anlan was a student at Peking University, there was still a clear difference between an ordinary top student and someone like Wen Jiu, who consistently ranked in the top three in major competitions.
So, what exactly was it about Wen Jiu that made Jian Yue betray her?
After thinking it over, Lu Ming came to a conclusion: Jian Yue was just being a fool!
Although Lu Ming’s words were harsh, Jian Yue didn’t retort. He lowered his head, asking himself, Why did I do something to hurt Wen Jiu?
When did it all start?
It seemed like Wen Jiu, even though she was the admired child of everyone else, always considered him the most special person in her eyes.
No matter the time, no matter the place, whenever he was around, her attention would always be on him.
In the early morning light, during the pouring summer rain, in the sweltering heat of autumn, in the cold and dry winter, and even in the deep night when the moon hung high—whenever he needed her, Wen Jiu would unhesitatingly appear by his side.
Who would have thought that a young lady like Wen Jiu would have such impressive culinary skills?
But Jian Yue knew, not only did he know, but Wen Jiu would also make all the dishes he loved.
She wasn’t like other girls who would make demands or throw tantrums—probably because she had never lacked anything since childhood.
Over time, the sharp and brilliant Wen Jiu that others saw seemed to have no edges in front of him.
So, when someone with a completely different personality, like Lin Anlan, appeared, Jian Yue began to lose focus.
Although Lin Anlan seemed gentle, she was actually very stubborn.
Even though she had been rejected by him many times, Lin Anlan would still act coquettishly towards him when she was hurt, persistently seeking his attention and affection.
Even when she received the slightest bit of his attention, she would be as happy as a child receiving candy.
Compared to the almost apathetic Wen Jiu, Lin Anlan was incredibly easy to please.
Unconsciously, this unfamiliar sense of accomplishment made him no longer resist Lin Anlan’s deliberate closeness. He started to be distracted, began lying to Wen Jiu, and began spending more and more time with Lin Anlan…
But what did Wen Jiu do wrong? She had only been excessively obedient in front of him.
Jian Yue had never realized how despicable and shameful he was until now.
He weakly leaned back in the driver’s seat, not even daring to face this despicable version of himself.
When Lu Ming arrived, he found Jian Yue in this half-dead state. Noticing the faint smell of antiseptic on him, Lu Ming wrinkled his nose in disgust.
Then he questioned, “Don’t tell me you went to see Wen Jiu in those dirty clothes?”
Upon hearing Lu Ming’s voice, Jian Yue’s unfocused gaze finally shifted toward him.
He bitterly tugged at the corner of his lips. “I’ll clean up and then go find her.”
“Mm.” Seeing his state, Lu Ming didn’t say anything further. He took Jian Yue to the hotel to clean up and get himself together before heading to Wen Jiu’s house.
However, when they arrived at Wen Jiu’s house, they waited for half an hour, and still no one came out.
Jian Yue, his nerves taut, tried unlocking the door with his fingerprint. But as soon as his finger touched the sensor, it showed a “recognition failed” message.
Jian Yue’s heart sank. He tried again, but just then, Aunt Zhao’s voice came from behind.
“Young Master Jian.”
Both of them quickly turned to look at Aunt Zhao, who was carrying something in her hands.
Jian Yue took a deep breath and cautiously said to her, “Aunt Zhao, I’m here to find A-Jiu.”
“I know,” Aunt Zhao replied with a calm expression. She then spoke, “Miss Wen has gone on a trip. She won’t be home for a while, and I don’t know when she’ll return.”
“I’m leaving for an overseas trip tomorrow as well, so you won’t need to come by here again.”
Wen Jiu hadn’t told Aunt Zhao about the problems between her and Jian Yue, but with Wen Jiu’s personality, the fact that she had decisively made this choice meant that Jian Yue’s mistake was unforgivable.
Since that was the case, even though Aunt Zhao had always liked Jian Yue as a child, she would not go against Wen Jiu’s wishes.
“Aunt Zhao.” Seeing that Aunt Zhao was about to enter the house after saying this, Jian Yue hurriedly stopped her, pleading with a sorrowful tone, “Can you please help me call A-Jiu? I have something I need to tell her. Please, I beg of you.”
Aunt Zhao looked at his sorrowful expression, shaking her head helplessly. “I can’t help you. If I upset Miss Wen, the Wen family will dismiss me.”
Although Aunt Zhao didn’t want to get involved in the issues between Wen Jiu and Jian Yue, she couldn’t help but say:
“Young Master Jian, you’ve known Miss Wen for so many years, you should understand her temper. I just want to know what kind of mistake you made that would make my young mistress so upset?”
“Do you know that Miss Wen has never suffered any grievances growing up? Yet, you actually made her cry? You, Jian Yue, have let us down terribly.”
“A-Jiu… cried?” Jian Yue’s voice felt like something was blocking his throat, and it took him a long time before he could squeeze out that one sentence.
As for Aunt Zhao’s question, he couldn’t answer, and he didn’t have the face to answer.
Lu Ming, on the other hand, had never expected that Wen Jiu would actually cry.
She made her decision so decisively, yet they thought she wouldn’t be upset.
So, she had cried after all?
Seeing Jian Yue, his eyes red and lost, Aunt Zhao knew she wouldn’t get the answer she was looking for. She shook her head, said nothing, and went into the house.
As the door closed in front of him, tears began to fall from Jian Yue’s reddened eyes.
He clenched his fists until they turned white, his entire being at a loss for what to do to make things right, to salvage the situation.
Lu Ming observed him quietly, but in the end, all he could do was sigh.
Both Jian Yue and he knew—today, they wouldn’t be seeing Wen Jiu.
As for the future…
Jian Yue didn’t dare to think about whether he and Wen Jiu would have one.
