Chapter 133: Yearning for Life
Dinner was stir-fried green peppers with potato shreds and Coke chicken wings.
The fridge was stocked with groceries Liang Zhirou had bought
for Chen Lu earlier. She couldn’t believe he didn’t cook at home, despite having so much food in the fridge, he still ordered takeout.
If it weren’t for the long commute back and forth, she would have cooked for him every day.
She just felt takeout wasn’t as healthy as home-cooked meals…
“I don’t know if it’s because of the rain, but I’m getting sleepy,” Liang Zhirou said, rubbing her eyes as she served Chen Lu his rice.
Chen Lu finally snapped out of his daze. “They say it’s embedded in our genes. There’s a theory that people couldn’t hunt or farm on rainy days, so they just stayed home and slept. Gradually, it became a habit.”
Liang Zhirou took a bite of the chicken wing Chen Lu had picked up for her, curiously asking, “What did they do at home? Did they do things like we do?”
Although she didn’t use her phone often, she always felt like ancient people were bored all day.
“Maybe they made babies,” Chen Lu said honestly. “Why do you think there were so many children in ancient times? Aside from the high infant mortality rate, it was because they had too much free time.”
Liang Zhirou blushed and didn’t say anything. She regretted asking that question and silently picked up some food to feed Chen Lu.
Eat, eat, don’t say anything anymore…
“My girlfriend is a great cook,” he praised with a chuckle.
“You’ll get tired of it eventually…”
“No way, I can love you forever, just like I love you now.”
Liang Zhirou pretended to eat her rice, hiding her mouth behind the bowl and secretly smiling.
The house was quiet, only the sound of their occasional soft conversation. The girl always asked childish and adorable questions, and Chen Lu patiently answered them.
Thinking about how this kind of life might become their daily routine, Chen Lu only had one thought in his mind: My future self is so damn lucky.
He never thought anyone would envy his future self before.
After dinner, Chen Lu took over the dishwashing. Seeing that the rain showed no signs of stopping, Liang Zhirou nervously called Xiao Xunfang.
“Hello…” She stood on the balcony, clutching her clothes tightly, her voice lacking confidence.
A familiar voice came from the phone: “Nier, what’s wrong?”
“Mom. I, I can’t go back…”
Because she initially mentioned the wrong point, it took her a lot of effort to explain the situation.
Strangely, Xiao Xunfang didn’t seem as worried as she expected.
She wasn’t sure if her mother believed her or Chen Lu.
Liang Zhirou sighed curiously and doubtfully. She felt like she was at the tiger’s mouth, but her mother wasn’t worried at all.
The girl quietly went to the kitchen door, peeking out to see Chen Lu’s serious and upright back.
If I’m eaten by such a handsome and gentle tiger, so be it.
“You can go take a shower first,” Chen Lu said suddenly.
Liang Zhirou was startled. “How did you know I came over?”
Chen Lu turned down the water flow slightly to avoid the noise affecting their conversation. “Because we have a telepathic connection.”
The girl snorted. “I don’t believe you.”
“Because I love you,” Chen Lu changed his explanation.
Liang Zhirou’s heart fluttered, and she became even more curious. “How did you know?”
“You’re so dumb,” Chen Lu was speechless after realizing he had teased her in vain. “You hung up the phone and went silent, even your footsteps disappeared. You wouldn’t just stand on the balcony watching the rain, right? You could only be sneaking to see me.”
“Don’t you think it’s because I love you? Why else would I be so concerned about your movements?”
Liang Zhirou smiled softly, walking over and hugging Chen Lu from behind. “Just thinking about how this might be our life together makes me so happy.”
“Then you should stay here every day.”
As soon as Chen Lu finished speaking, the girl bumped her head against him.
“Why are you still watching? If you go shower now, I’ll have less chance of sneaking over to peek. After all, I’m busy,” he urged.
“I don’t have any clothes to change into…” Liang Zhirou said timidly.
Girls are so troublesome.
Chen Lu mentally complained, softly saying, “You can wear mine, go to my room and find something.”
“Okay.” Liang Zhirou gently poked Chen Lu’s waist. “If you sneak a peek, I’ll hit you.”
“Is there a possibility you could lock the door?”
“…Oh, right.”
Chen Lu finished washing the dishes and sat in the living room for a while. The girl, like a crab, slowly moved out of the bathroom step by step.
She was wearing Chen Lu’s T-shirt and shorts. The white T-shirt was a bit too big on her, and the hem almost covered her shorts. At first glance, it looked like she was only wearing a T-shirt.
Her legs were exposed below the T-shirt.
“Why are you only wearing shorts?” Liang Zhirou asked, her voice trembling.
Chen Lu scratched his head, “Because I basically don’t wear shorts. The long ones haven’t been washed yet. You should have seen them in the bathroom.”
Liang Zhirou walked around, but when she realized there was nowhere to hide, she gritted her teeth and went to sit next to Chen Lu on the sofa.
Chen Lu was about to get up, but the girl grabbed him.
“What’s wrong?” he asked curiously.
“You can go later.”
“Why?”
Liang Zhirou was a little embarrassed, “You went in right after I finished washing, it’s a bit weird…”
Chen Lu sighed with a wry smile and sat down, challenging himself to focus his gaze on the computer screen and the four-times scope AK suppression.
As a normal guy, it was really hard to resist looking at her legs.
After a while, he finally got Liang Zhirou’s permission to temporarily leave the living room.
Liang Zhirou sat obediently on the sofa, not daring to move. She looked down at her legs and became even more nervous.
She had just taken a few deep breaths when she heard Chen Lu’s wail from the bathroom.
“Liang Zhirou! Are you trying to scald me to death?!”
The girl blinked blankly and muttered to herself, “It’s not hot…”
The time it takes for a guy to shower is much shorter than for a girl. Within a few minutes, Chen Lu finished showering and opened the bathroom door.
Liang Zhirou was stunned for a moment, then quickly covered her eyes, “Why aren’t you wearing clothes?!”
“……I just didn’t put on a shirt, I’m not naked. Your words are easily misunderstood.”
Chen Lu walked back to his room speechless and grabbed a random T-shirt to put on. He never bothered with matching clothes, his motto was “wearable is good enough.”
“I’ll help you dry your hair.”
“Okay~”
There was really nothing else to do, so the two sat on the sofa and watched a movie.
Chen Lu let Liang Zhirou choose whatever she wanted, and she picked “The Legend of 1900.”
The two turned off the lights and snuggled together. The only light in the living room came from the laptop screen, illuminating the two who had unknowingly kissed.
After a long time, Chen Lu watched the movie while holding the girl’s hand in his, squeezing it.
He sighed softly, “I need to buy you some hand cream or something, to slowly get rid of the calluses on your hands.”
“Will it feel uncomfortable to touch then?” Liang Zhirou asked softly.
“It’s uncomfortable in my heart.” Chen Lu said truthfully.
Liang Zhirou closed her eyes tightly, holding back her tears, and continued to lean against Chen Lu’s chest.
……
“Why didn’t he get off the ship?”
After the movie ended, the girl recalled the image of the ship slowly sinking into the sea, her expression filled with sadness.
Having lost a loved one, she couldn’t understand this act of self-destruction. There were so many people like her father who wanted to live but couldn’t…
She should cherish her life.
Chen Lu stroked the girl’s smooth long hair, “For many people, there are things more important than life in their eyes.”
For 1900, the ship was his whole world. Once he stepped off, there was only unfamiliar land and a confused future. This was inseparable from the context of the movie’s creation, but it would be too far-fetched to explain this to this simpleton.
Liang Zhirou blinked, seemingly understanding, “Like what?”
Chen Lu leaned down and kissed the girl’s forehead, saying softly, “Like you in my eyes.”
It was almost eleven o’clock at night, and the rain had subsided a lot. It would definitely be no problem to hail a taxi.
However, Chen Lu didn’t notice.
Neither did Liang Zhirou.
Perhaps they really didn’t think about it, or maybe they tacitly ignored it.
In the tranquil summer night after the rain, the lights in the buildings went out one by one, only the chirping of crickets and the croaking of frogs could be heard, rising and falling…
