Chapter 37: Promise
After hearing Chen Lu’s words, Liang Zhirou picked up her bag and slowly got up, standing quietly beside Chen Lu.
Jiang Chao and Chen Lu looked at each other, not knowing what to say for a moment.
As Chen Lu’s best friend, he originally disliked Mo Yuqing very much.
Unexpectedly, Mo Yuqing was willing to take this step now.
Only then did he have time to look at Liang Zhirou. Upon closer inspection…
This girl’s beauty didn’t seem to be any worse than Mo Yuqing’s.
He didn’t know whether to say Chen Lu was lucky or unlucky.
It could be said that Chen Lu was lucky because he had chased Mo Yuqing for seven years without success.
But if it was said that Chen Lu was unlucky, the girl beside him named Liang Zhirou was definitely a good person and beautiful.
Before Chen Lu could react, Chen Mo pulled Liang Zhirou and was about to run away.
The girl looked at Chen Lu with a silly expression, her face slightly anxious.
Chen Lu smiled and waved his hand, signaling for them to go first.
“Lend me your car, I’ll take her home.” Chen Lu said softly. Seeing Chen Mo’s playful smile, he guessed that Liang Zhirou probably wouldn’t be going to class with Chen Mo today.
Jiang Chao didn’t hesitate at all. He took out his keys and handed them to him, joking, “If other guys knew about this, they would be envious to death. Both girls involved with you are so beautiful.”
“Envy my ass, they don’t understand a damn thing!”
“What are you thinking?” Jiang Chao was very curious. “I thought you would be moved to tears.”
“If you were in my position, you would know that after so much hurt, a few apologies are useless…”
Chen Lu said coldly, leaving Jiang Chao with a indifferent back.
…
Chen Lu arrived at the school gate and saw Chen Mo pulling Liang Zhirou to eat something. His little sister seemed to like these street food stalls.
The two stood under the bright streetlights, eating Oden in small bites and feeding mosquitoes.
“If you like it, why don’t you get into this school? There will be a whole street full of these stalls every night.” Chen Lu complained. He had gotten tired of eating them after all these years.
Then he gently poked Liang Zhirou’s forehead with his index finger, “I’ll take you home.”
“I have to get in first.” Chen Mo spat at him, reluctantly watching her elder brother take Liang Zhirou away.
Just as they were about to leave, Chen Lu’s phone rang.
He saw the caller ID and was stunned.
Liang Zhirou blinked her eyes at him. She rarely saw Chen Lu, who was always calm and composed, show such an awkward expression.
“Who is it?” Chen Mo also found it strange and asked.
“Uncle Mo…”
Chen Lu pointed at his sister, signaling her to keep her voice down, and then answered the call.
“Hello, Uncle Mo.” Chen Lu smiled softly. “It’s been a while since I saw you. My dad was still talking about you the other day.”
A dry, capable voice of a middle-aged man came from the other end of the line. “Xiao Lu, how are you doing recently? Have you encountered any difficulties?”
Mo Wenbin always spoke in a formal way, with a literary tone.
“I’m fine, what kind of difficulties can a college student have.”
Chen Lu casually made small talk. He knew that the real topic was coming soon.
“Have you been having trouble with Yuqing recently?”
“We had a little disagreement.”
He decided to tell the truth after all. Since the other party asked, it must be because they had come to see their precious daughter’s performance.
‘A little disagreement about not having any more contact.’
He said to himself.
Chen Lu then asked, “Did you come to watch the evening performance?”
“Yes, but this child refused to see me. I couldn’t find you either, so I asked the driver to pick me up.” Mo Wenbin sighed softly. “It’s normal for young people to have friction. Remember to communicate more. Just getting angry won’t solve the problem.”
“Okay.”
“You’re the child I’ve watched grow up. I feel at ease with you by Yuqing’s side.” Mo Wenbin’s tone was serious. “When I have some free time, come and have dinner with me. I have to go now.”
“Alright, see you later, Uncle Mo.”
Chen Lu politely hung up the phone and then breathed a sigh of relief.
Although Mo Wenbin had always been kind to him since he was a child, it was still a bit nerve-wracking for a college student to make a phone call to an official of this level.
Not to mention, the other party might be here to reprimand him on behalf of their precious daughter.
This call was just over, and the next one came in.
“Who is this again?” Chen Mo continued to ask.
Chen Lu looked at the phone screen with a speechless expression. “It’s Dad.”
Why should I suffer because Mo Yuqing is having a breakdown?
“Hello.” Chen Lu said with a sense of resignation.
“What’s going on between you and Yuqing?” Chen Guanglin’s tone was more casual, and he directly questioned his son.
“A little disagreement, I just explained it to Uncle Mo.”
“Hmm.” Chen Guanglin didn’t seem to be very reassured and continued to add, “If you dare to bully her, don’t wait for Uncle Mo, I’ll break your legs first.”
“Why don’t you just let her be your daughter?” Chen Lu said angrily.
Although he had only been beaten by his mother since he was a child, he was still unhappy to be threatened.
“I’m hanging up! I still have to take Liang Zhirou home.” Chen Lu said as he helped Liang Zhirou fasten her seatbelt. “Tell Mom not to call me, or she’ll come to question me too.”
…
On the other side, Chen Guanglin heard the phone hang up and sighed.
“What kind of disagreement are these two kids having?” Wang Xiaoxia, sitting next to Chen Guanglin, was curious. “Yuqing made such a big deal on stage.”
Chen Guanglin was helpless. “Don’t you know your own child? We can’t possibly know anything he doesn’t want to say.”
After a while, he said again, “Let the kids handle their own affairs, we can’t control them.
This kid has been clinging to her since they were little, but he still hasn’t chased her down. He didn’t inherit any of my excellent genes.”
Chen Guanglin and Mo Wenbin had played together since they were in diapers. He was very willing to become related by marriage.
Wang Xiaoxia didn’t think much of it. She rolled her eyes at her husband. “I think Zhirou is a good girl. Our Xiao Lu definitely likes Zhirou.”
…
Chen Lu drove, carrying Liang Zhirou back home.
The two of them didn’t talk much along the way.
It’s just that Chen Lu would turn his head to look at this silly girl from time to time. If he couldn’t tell that she was in a low mood, he wouldn’t be Chen Lu.
“Are we still best friends?” Chen Lu asked.
“Yes.” The girl immediately replied.
“Then why won’t you share your Oden with me?”
Hearing this, Liang Zhirou hurriedly handed the small paper tube in her hands to Chen Lu with both hands. “I…I’m sorry. I was lost in thought and forgot…”
“I’m driving.” Chen Lu, who had been casually steering with one hand, immediately switched to using both hands.
“Feed me, okay?”
“Okay.”
Liang Zhirou took out a skewer, looked at the steam rising from it, and waited patiently for a while.
“It’s too slow this way, blow on it. I don’t mind.” Chen Lu smiled.
He didn’t have time to see if the girl’s face turned red. He only knew that the girl paused for a moment and then carefully blew on it for him.
When she felt it was almost done, she handed it to his mouth.
Then he just opened his mouth and ate all the way.
In front of the small alley.
Liang Zhirou slowly unfastened her seatbelt and waved to Chen Lu. “I’m going now.”
She was only willing to accept Chen Lu helping her fasten her seatbelt, but she couldn’t accept him helping her unfasten it for a while.
It felt like he was taking off her clothes.
Chen Lu nodded slightly. “Say hello to your mom for me. I won’t go down this time.”
He looked straight ahead, not knowing what he was thinking.
Liang Zhirou blinked her eyes and then gently nodded.
…
The girl walked alone in the dimly lit alley. The old overhead lights flickered, her thin figure looked very lonely, and she would twitch from time to time.
She held her canvas bag, walking slowly with her head down. No matter how hard she thought, she couldn’t understand why, but she was so sad.
Tears just wouldn’t stop flowing.
She didn’t know why she, who had always been alone, suddenly couldn’t live without Chen Lu.
She was like a starving refugee who finally saw food, afraid of returning to her previous life.
She was afraid of Chen Lu leaving her, afraid of him leaving her alone like he did just now.
Liang Zhirou wiped her tears as she walked, her steps slow and slow.
She had to cry outside, she couldn’t bring tears back home.
Mom would be worried.
At this moment, Chen Lu’s voice suddenly broke the silence of the alley.
“Liang Zhirou! Look up!
I said I would always be behind you, and I will!!”
Chen Lu stood at the entrance of the alley, looking at the girl’s back from afar.
The girl continued to walk slowly forward, finally slowly raising her head.
