When Chen Ze saw the culprit responsible for his condition, his anger surged. He swore he had just been curious that morning, yet before he even had the chance to say a word, he was brutally attacked.
Wang Xiaoke, seeing the man from earlier, immediately felt her gloom lift. She was genuinely grateful to her savior.
“Sir, that’s not the right way to put it. After all, I didn’t do it on purpose, did I? But I’m really thankful that you stepped in to save me,” she said sincerely, patting her chest.
“It was my oversight not to personally escort you here, but rest assured, I’ll cover all your medical expenses. I won’t short you a single penny.”
“Do I look like someone who needs money?” Chen Ze raised an eyebrow disdainfully, his phoenix eyes sharp.
Wang Xiaoke carefully scrutinized her savior. Not only was he strikingly good-looking, but his obsession with his own health was almost comical. Someone who could burn money so recklessly in a hospital was clearly no ordinary person.
“No, you don’t,” she admitted truthfully. Then she added with a teasing smile, “But surely you’re not going to ask me to repay you with my hand in marriage, right? Someone like me wouldn’t be your type anyway.”
Chen Ze nodded in agreement. “That one sentence of yours proves there’s hope for you yet.”
Wang Xiaoke was dumbfounded. What did she say? How does that mean there’s hope for me?
“Why do you say that?” Wang Xiaoke, always eager to learn, asked sincerely.
“Because in today’s society, it’s rare for people to have such self-awareness,” Chen Ze said. Even with his head wrapped in bandages, looking like a ball, his remark still stung Wang Xiaoke deeply.
“Well, thank you for the compliment, I guess,” she replied, slightly exasperated.
Wang Xiaoke felt like she had just been hit by a million blows. “He’s just like Song Yi I met today.”
“I don’t need anything else from you for now, so as you just said, let’s settle the medical bills first,” Chen Ze said, standing up with the help of his beautiful assistant. He looked down at Wang Xiaoke from a superior position.
“As for the compensation for lost work, since you’ve shown a good attitude in admitting your mistake, I’ll let it slide for now. If I need your help again, I’ll call on you.”
“Wait, big brother, can we forget about the lost work compensation considering how sincerely I’ve admitted my mistake?” Wang Xiaoke asked, seeking his mercy.
“No,” Chen Ze waved his hand dismissively, his expression one of disgust as if she were a nuisance to his eyes. “You can leave now.”
“Why?” Wang Xiaoke still wasn’t giving up.
“If I hadn’t had someone bring you here, I’d be the one eating the loss. And for someone like you, morally corrupt and of poor character, why should I be so merciful and let you off the hook?” Chen Ze said with a smile that was bright as June sunlight, making Wang Xiaoke itch to punch him.
“Where am I morally corrupt and of poor character?” She fumed internally. “What on earth did this guy see in me? I don’t even know!”
“I never intended to avoid responsibility. I actually planned to visit you after work, but before I could act on it, you brought me here. This isn’t my fault,” Wang Xiaoke explained, feeling a little guilty. After all, she did get him hospitalized.
“Well, you’ve seen me, so now you should take responsibility for what you need to do,” Chen Ze said without blinking, casually accepting a long bill from his assistant. He then handed it over to Wang Xiaoke in an exaggerated, condescending manner. “This is the amount I paid in advance.”
“Five thousand a day for your stay?” Wang Xiaoke rubbed her eyes in disbelief. “Are you serious?”
“That’s just the cost for the room. My medical bills are on this one,” Chen Ze handed her another slip of paper.
