Chapter 40: Fulfilling Obligations

Wang Xiaoke followed the directions on the note and arrived at a serene and elegantly decorated café.

The warm sunlight bathed the street at 10:30 in the morning, and a faint floral fragrance lingered in the air, creating a lazy and cozy atmosphere.

The man’s refined features, highlighted by the sunlight, seemed almost unreal, like a character stepping out of a painting.

His black suit jacket rested on the chair beside him, while the top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, lending him an air that was both sensual and sophisticated.

“Hello, are you…” Wang Xiaoke’s words abruptly stopped mid-sentence.

“It’s you?” Chen Xiao blurted out as he saw the uninvited person sitting across from him.

“That should be my line!” Wang Xiaoke was equally stunned. “Your name is Chen Xiao?”

“None other, Miss Wang Xiaoke,” Chen Xiao replied, his initial surprise quickly giving way to his usual composure.

“But didn’t you already have a girlfriend? How did you end up going on a blind date?”

Wang Xiaoke couldn’t wrap her head around it. From what she’d previously gathered, this guy was definitely not short of female company.

“Thanks to you, we broke up.”

After the last misunderstanding between them, Chen Xiao didn’t bother pretending around her anymore.

Chen Xiao casually stroked his well-defined jawline and said, “Don’t you think you owe me some compensation for that?”

“I already apologized for what happened last time, didn’t I? Don’t be so petty about it; you’re a grown man,” Wang Xiaoke replied, feigning ignorance.

Trying to change the subject, she chuckled awkwardly. “Clinging to trivial matters like this is hardly the behavior of a true gentleman.”

“I don’t care if you’re playing dumb or genuinely don’t get it.” Chen Xiao’s sharp gaze scanned her from head to toe before he rubbed his chin and commented, “You’re a little short, but your face is okay. Overall, I suppose you barely pass.”

Wang Xiaoke felt completely out of sync with his train of thought. Her large almond-shaped eyes blinked in confusion.

“Don’t say I didn’t give you a chance to make amends,” Chen Xiao declared. “Since you’re the reason I broke up with that woman, you’ll take over her responsibilities from now on.”

Wang Xiaoke was stunned and asked dumbly, “What obligations?”

Chen Xiao curled his lips into a smirk and, as casually as discussing the weather, said, “The obligation to sleep with me.”

Wang Xiaoke stared at him as if he were an alien. “Excuse me, sir, are you confusing something here?”

The roguish smile never left Chen Xiao’s handsome face. He raised an eyebrow at her comment. “I’d like to hear more.”

“I’m here for a blind date, not to sleep with you,” Wang Xiaoke stressed, feeling the need to clarify things.

The only reason she was still tolerating this jerk’s arrogance was because she had promised her father a photo, and she hadn’t secured that yet.

“What’s the difference? Aren’t you here for our Chen family’s money?” Chen Xiao looked down at her with a superior air and a face full of disdain. “Women like you are nothing new to me. At first, you act all noble and pretend you’re above material wealth, but after a few rolls in bed, your true colors always show.”

This was the last straw. Wang Xiaoke’s initial intention to have a reasonable conversation and convince this man to turn over a new leaf was completely extinguished. Instead, an overwhelming surge of fury rose within her.

“Chen, you think a little sunshine means you can shine, don’t you?” Wang Xiaoke lowered her head, her expression unreadable in the shadows.
