Su Ge did not refuse.
To put it bluntly, Su Ge is simply an ordinary citizen. While she maintains a steadfast and unwavering attitude towards significant matters concerning her country and family, she tends to have a more narrow-minded outlook on other things.
She’ll consider what’s more cost-effective and beneficial in her mind.
Take the current situation, for example. Su Ge dislikes Flynn, someone who has discriminated against her from the bottom of her heart. Even if he knelt down and apologized to her, she still couldn’t get over her resentment. It was already generous of her not to hit him every time they met.
As for Abing, to be honest, Su Ge had a good impression of her from the first time they met.
Her appearance fits Su Ge’s idea of what an alien should look like: big, golden compound eyes, and long legs that are adept at running. Most importantly, she could directly suppress Nalita, who always seemed to be causing trouble. All these qualities made Su Ge very interested in her.
However, since she got closer to Flynn, Su Ge gradually lost interest in developing a deeper friendship with her.
Su Ge hadn’t expected Abing would request to join them in searching for food today. Given Flynn’s stubbornness, she thought that even if Abing wanted to interact with her, Flynn would firmly oppose it.
But Abing came, which surprised Su Ge.
Putting aside the grievances with Flynn, purely from a racial talent perspective, Abing was extremely good at running, a skill that is very useful in hunting. Su Ge didn’t think she should refuse her.
In a desperate place with few people, not coming together would cause problems.
Rong Shi was somewhat surprised by Su Ge’s decision, but only slightly. He didn’t ask or question it. To him, the more people, the stronger they are, and as long as Su Ge was willing, there was no downside.
However, Zigmadar spoke up loudly, “Su Ge, you’re actually letting Abing come along? Have you changed your mind?”
Su Ge shot a cold glance at Zigmadar with her dead-fish eyes and sneered, “What do you mean by ‘actually’? When did I ever say she couldn’t come? If you don’t know how to speak, then keep your mouth shut.”
Zigmadar scratched the four little bumps on his head and suddenly realized that his words were inappropriate. However, before he could say anything else, an extremely recognizable voice came from a distance.
“Ah!! It’s Rong Shi! Rong Shi!”
It was Nalita’s voice.
Everyone turned toward the sound and saw two greyish figures in the distance. As the voice screamed, one of the figures stumbled toward them, looking like it was about to fall at any moment.
Subconsciously, Rong Shi, with an expressionless face, took two steps back and stood directly behind the tall and strong Amphit, trying to hide himself as much as possible.
Despite this, Nalita still spotted him.
“Ah, Rong Shi! Are you here to pick me up?”
Everyone was used to Nalita losing her wits upon seeing Rong Shi. Su Ge observed her and the person behind her, Saro, noticing how disheveled they both looked.
Their clothes were filthy as if they had rolled in a mud pit, with no clean spot on their bodies. More importantly, their faces showed signs of exhaustion. It was clear that their days away from the safety zone hadn’t been kind to them.
“No.” Being directly addressed and stared at up close, Rong Shi felt a headache coming on. He had never encountered such a woman in his life—one who couldn’t speak properly and wouldn’t listen properly, making communication impossible.
In this situation, Rong Shi’s only thought was to retreat.
“Why didn’t you come to pick me up? Haven’t you been worried about me these past few days? Aren’t you the leader of the safety zone? Don’t you care about your team members, like me?”
Rong Shi felt a tangled mess of frustration building up, his eyebrows furrowing deeply. He let out a long sigh, “Miss, we didn’t know each other before, so…”
“So now we know each other!”
…
If this nonsensical exchange continued, they wouldn’t get anywhere today. Just then, Abing, who had been silent, suddenly spoke, “Nalita, we’re heading out.”
“Where to?” Hearing a familiar voice, Nalita seemed to regain some of her wits. She turned to look at the others and finally noticed, “Why are so many of you here? Are you leaving the safety zone?”
“Are you coming with us to look for food?” Although Abing’s question sounded like a question, it didn’t carry any hint of inquiry: “This time, we’ll probably have to walk to the other side of the mountain. Along the way, we might encounter some interesting creatures and plants, and maybe even some fierce beasts. Of course, Rong Shi will come too. Do you want to join us?”
Visibly, Nalita’s body trembled a few times. This time, she didn’t even look at Rong Shi. She waved her hand at the group and said, “No, I’m not going. I need to rest.” After saying this, she ran straight towards her camp without even greeting Rong Shi.
However, Saro, who was following her, was quite surprised to see Abing with this group. He simply raised his eyebrows in surprise but said nothing more. Instead, he turned to Rong Shi and asked another question: “You’re going to look for food?”
Rong Shi glanced at him, not particularly warmly. His personal impression of these people was not very favorable, but this didn’t hinder normal communication: “Yes.”
Saro pondered for a couple of seconds before asking, “Are you out of nutrient solution?”
“Yes.”
“So, you’re trying other foods?” Although Saro had a liking for Nalita, it didn’t mean he wasn’t using his brain. In fact, the events of the past few days would clear anyone’s head, even those from the upper-class first and second-tier planets.
“Yes.” Rong Shi used three “yes” responses to acknowledge all of Saro’s questions.
When the words “other food” came out of Saro’s mouth so calmly, Su Ge suddenly realized that this alien named Saro was not a one-dimensional character. He actually had another side; a side Su Ge didn’t understand.
After Rong Shi nodded and confirmed Saro’s statement, Saro said, “I am already exhausted, so it’s unlikely I can join you in hunting, but is there something I can do to help?”
Sure enough, there was more to Saro than Su Ge initially thought. Su Ge discreetly observed the alien named Saro, noticing that it seemed like he had just learned about their hunting plans from the recent conversation and yet already had a plan in mind. This person was very quick-witted.
“I only have one nutrient solution left, so I also need food to regain my strength. However, given my current state, it’s clear I can’t contribute much to the hunt. Following you would just slow you down. So, what I want to ask is, what can I do to trade for the food I need?”
Saro explained his previous words calmly and rationally. He appeared exceptionally logical, which made Su Ge regard him in a new light. Not only was this person quick-thinking, but he also valued fair trade.
No one answered Saro, because at that moment, they all looked at Su Ge. Saro noticed this and followed their gaze until his eyes landed on Su Ge, leaving him genuinely surprised. His slightly agape mouth made his previous calm and rational demeanor seem somewhat out of place.
Finally, Rong Shi explained to him, “I’m not the one leading everyone to find food. It’s Su Ge. You could say, we can eat thanks to her.”
Saro’s expression became even more astonished. This time, his mouth was not only open, but his entire expression was one of utter disbelief. However, this state only lasted for a few seconds before he walked over to Su Ge.
Su Ge looked at the dirty alien in confusion, not knowing what he intended to do. Then she saw him bow deeply and respectfully in front of her. Straightening up, he said to her respectfully, “Earthling, please forgive my verbal offense a few days ago. I am ashamed of my behavior and hope you can accept my apology.”
Su Ge: (⊙_⊙)
Wait, your attitude change is too sudden.
The last time we met, you were mocking and sneering at me, almost wishing to grind me to the ground to highlight the superiority of your advanced planet. Now, you’re doing this…
This makes it hard for me to respond. I was already prepared to treat you like Flynn, with a martial arts-style confrontation. Now you’re giving me a rainbow after the storm? This doesn’t fit!
“Then please keep an eye on all the camps within the safety zone. Everyone’s hard work is here, and we can’t let any creatures break in and destroy it,” Rong Shi timely rescued the still-dazed Su Ge.
Su Ge remained in a daze until long after they had left. She sighed, “Why does Saro seem like a completely different person now?”
Rong Shi, however, wasn’t surprised. He smiled, “Pila is a second-tier planet, but it’s applying to upgrade to a first-tier. This planet is one of the wealthiest in the entire Galactic Alliance, and everyone on it is rich. Do you know why?”
Su Ge shook her head.
“Because the people of this planet have a racial talent for business. It sounds strange, doesn’t it? It doesn’t seem like a racial talent.” Rong Shi explained seriously to Su Ge.
“It does sound a bit strange.”
“But that’s Pila’s racial talent. The people of Pila are born merchants. They can find the greatest profit in the most ordinary things and trade to make that profit theirs. With this explanation, isn’t the recent situation easier to understand?”
Su Ge: =.=
Impressive.
Since there was very little salt left, the main goal this time was to find a salt mine, and hopefully some edible items along the way.
However, the salt mine was quite far, and considering Glaki’s poor sense of direction (crossed that out). He has no sense of direction at all, they wandered quite a bit after entering the forest.
Luckily, they didn’t come back empty-handed. During their journey, they discovered lots of wild vegetables and herbs. With Su Ge’s help, Yilan, who had the best memory, learned to tell the helpful plants from the useless ones, gathering a big bunch in no time.
But they didn’t find any of the staple foods the aliens were longing for.
Su Ge was also quite disappointed. Even if there were no rice, wheat, or corn, finding potatoes would have been nice, but unfortunately, they found nothing of the sort.
Perhaps because everyone’s goal in entering the forest was clear—to find food—everyone kept their eyes wide open. Though they didn’t encounter any large animals, they caught quite a few small animals like rabbits and wild chickens.
The aliens used the method Su Ge taught them, weaving grass into ropes and hanging the animals in a string behind their backpacks. From a distance, this sight was quite spectacular.
After wandering in the forest for two hours without finding the correct path, the group decided to sit down and rest. During the break, Su Ge habitually took out her notebook to start drawing a map of the forest.
Honestly, her drawing skills were just average, but she had a good sense of direction and spatial imagination. Even though she wasn’t very familiar with the forest, she was able to detail the areas they had walked through fairly accurately.
Of course, this level of detail probably only made sense to her.
“Are you drawing a map?” As Su Ge was seriously drawing, Ron’s voice sounded in her ear. She turned to find that, unbeknownst to her, Ron had sat down beside her and had been intently watching her draw for quite a while.
“Yes, I’m mapping the paths we’ve taken. I think it might be useful later,” Su Ge admitted openly.
Ron tilted his head, examining the map in Su Ge’s hand for a while before asking, “Can I take a look?”
Su Ge generously handed him the pen and notebook. Ron first expressed curiosity about the paper and pen from Earth, then began to scrutinize the drawings.
At first, Su Ge thought Ron might not understand her maps, given her barely passable drawing skills. But she soon realized she had underestimated him. After carefully examining the previous drawings, Ron began sketching on the blank pages with swift, precise strokes.
He was amazingly fast, and his accuracy was remarkable. Even Su Ge’s messy maps turned out accurate in his hands which closely match the reality.
As Su Ge watched, she was dumbfounded. It was as if he had a built-in printer in his hand.
Before long, Ron handed Su Ge a semi-finished map. It was semi-finished because no one had fully explored the entire forest, so many areas couldn’t be drawn. But it was a map because it was so precise, with marked landmarks in confusing spots—details Su Ge had casually noted down.
“You’re amazing,” Su Ge finally managed to say, staring at the semi-finished map in awe.
“It’s nothing special. We Ronnies are best at spatial memory and drawing maps. You might not know, but many planets in the Galactic Alliance are good at map-making. However, the best ones always come from Ronnie Star. Our children learn to read maps from birth, and converting the paths we’ve walked into accurate maps is something we learn in school.”
Ron spoke with pride, much like how Su Ge felt proud of being from Earth. Every alien took pride in their home planet. Seeing the light in his eyes, Su Ge’s lips curved into a smile.
She then handed her notebook to Ron and said, “From now on, you’ll be in charge of mapping.”
Ron was quite surprised by Su Ge’s action.
To be honest, Ron’s relationship with Su Ge wasn’t as close as that of Zigmadar, Sera, and Rong Shi, but it was better than with those who joined the safe zone later. Ron had a certain respect for Su Ge, but he was indifferent towards Earth as a fifth-tier planet, not finding it particularly interesting.
This lack of interest kept his relationship with Su Ge somewhat distant. Unlike Zigmadar and Sera, who actively supported Su Ge’s decisions, Ron tended to watch from the sidelines. He wouldn’t refuse to help, but he wasn’t proactive either.
In short, Ron had a laid-back, somewhat passive attitude. If Su Ge hadn’t been drawing maps, he probably wouldn’t have approached her. He was clear that the team centered around Rong Shi and Su Ge, and he preferred to go with the flow, neither standing out nor volunteering unnecessarily.
Now, Su Ge was asking him to draw maps, and this surprised him a bit.
“Why?” he asked.
Su Ge looked puzzled. “Why what?”
“Why do you want me to draw the maps? You’re doing fine on your own.”
Su Ge: =.=
If it weren’t for your exceptional skills, I could still pretend my maps are good. But with your maps as a reference, do you think I can still claim mine are fine?
I know my own limitations.
Whenever faced with such moments, Su Ge liked to put on a deep and meaningful air, quoting ancient wisdom: “There’s a saying on Earth: ‘Every profession has its specialty.’”
Ron looked at her blankly. “Speak plainly.”
“It means that whoever is good at something should do that thing. Since you’re skilled at map drawing, you should do it. It’s not suitable for an amateur like me to handle it.”
Ron thought for a moment. “Tonight’s meal, I want an extra portion.”
“Sure,” Su Ge agreed generously. Whether it was one sheep or a flock, it made no difference to her.
—
It felt like Ron agreed quite easily, but Ron turned his eyes and seemed to want to continue bargaining. Su Ge, who had long seen through his intentions, chuckled coldly, “That’s about it. If you don’t take what’s good enough, you’ll end up with nothing.”
Ron: =.=
Earthlings are really hard to deceive.
After handing over the task of drawing maps, Su Ge suddenly felt much lighter. It seemed that a life of doing nothing was indeed the happiest.
As dusk approached, Rong Shi and Su Ge confirmed the location for camping tonight: a flat area near the stream in the forest, surrounded by dense trees and some large stones, perfect for sheltering from the wind.
There were fish in the stream as usual, but this time Su Ge didn’t take the initiative to catch them. Instead, Abing, who had watched her catch fish the last time, became the main catcher, while Su Ge’s task was to find spices such as chili, Sichuan pepper, wild onions, and lemongrass. After all, without these things, the fish would be difficult to eat due to its fishy taste.
With everyone gathering firewood, when Su Ge began grilling the cleaned and marinated fish on the grill over the fire, all the aliens’ attention inevitably fell on the grilled fish.
Glaki looked eagerly at the grilled fish with its skin curling under the flames and couldn’t help but drool as he spoke, “I’ve been wanting to eat this since last time, and finally, I can.”
Su Ge said frankly, “Last time wasn’t as good as this time.”
“Why?”
“Last time, there was no salt.” Su Ge said as she pinched a small amount of salt from the small jar, she carried with her and carefully sprinkled it on the grilled fish. She chatted casually with the aliens, “Actually, the grilled fish here is not as good as on Earth.”
“Why?”
“Because the spices are not complete. On Earth, there are many special spices that can fully bring out the freshness of these foods. For example, for this grilled meat or fish, if you could add a bit of garlic paste or cumin, the aroma would hit you straight in the head, that’s the real deliciousness of earthly cuisine…”
“Can we find these things here?”
“Who knows?”
…
A sense of unwillingness and loss instantly enveloped the aliens, and suddenly, life didn’t seem so good anymore.
While waiting for the fish to grill, Su Ge suddenly felt a drop of water on the back of her hand. She looked up curiously at the sky, which was too dark to see anything clearly. Where did the water come from?
Before she could think about it, another drop fell, this time not on the back of her hand but directly on her cheek.
Drip, a big drop, the cool sensation made her shiver.
This… rain?
Oh my god! It’s raining?!
