Su Jiang stood up, realizing that he couldn’t persuade Director Zheng at the moment.
This person, he couldn’t see through.
Even with skills like psychological analysis, he couldn’t figure out what Director Zheng truly wanted.
As he was about to leave, Su Jiang suddenly thought of something. He stood by the door, turned back, and looked at Director Zheng.
“Director Zheng, I heard from Yang that you ask every new recruit the same question.”
“That’s correct.”
Upon hearing this, Su Jiang walked back, his gaze fixed on Director Zheng.
“I want to hear what exactly is the question you ask everyone.”
What kind of question would prompt someone like Director Zheng to repeatedly inquire about it?
Su Jiang felt that this could be his breakthrough.
Director Zheng remained silent for a while, took a drag of his cigarette, closed his eyes, and said softly:
“The question is very simple.”
“If one day, you have the ability to stop all the conflicts in the world, what would you do?”
Upon hearing this question, a gleam appeared in Su Jiang’s eyes. He seemed to understand what Director Zheng was seeking.
“What kind of answer can you give to this question?”
Su Jiang stood in place, not giving an immediate response. Instead, he asked himself again in his heart.
If I truly had that ability to face all the conflicts in the world, what would I do?
Su Jiang might have known what answer Director Zheng wanted to hear, but he didn’t want to say it. He chose not to deceive in such matters.
So, he spoke up:
“If there really comes a day like that, I would continue my usual routine, eat, sleep, go to school during the day, and take a moonlit walk with someone I care about at night. I would live each day as it comes.”
Upon hearing this answer, Director Zheng opened his eyes.
“Why?”
“Perhaps I have the ability to stop the conflicts in this world, but I cannot erase the greed and selfishness of human nature.”
“The greater the power, the greater the responsibility!”
“You can use these words to restrain yourself, but don’t use them to impose a moral dilemma on others.”
Su Jiang remained expressionless. He now understood that Director Zheng might desire a world without conflicts.
However, that was impossible.
Where there are uncultivated fields, disputes arise as soon as they are cultivated.
No one wishes for conflicts in the world, yet no one can avoid them either.
It’s human nature, as well as interests.
Director Zheng took a deep breath, choosing not to argue with Su Jiang, and closed his eyes once again.
“You may leave.”
This time, Su Jiang didn’t hesitate. He walked out without saying another word.
He also knew that the path with the Inspectorate might have reached a dead-end and that his relationship with Director Zheng had evolved beyond simple interests.
However, their beliefs didn’t align.
Director Zheng believed that the conflicts in the world could be prevented and that capable individuals needed to contribute to this cause.
While Su Jiang believed that as long as human selfishness and greed existed, the conflicts in the world would never cease.
Neither Su Jiang nor Director Zheng could agree with each other’s ideologies.
Yang waited outside for quite some time. When he saw Su Jiang coming out, he hurriedly asked, “Why did it take so long? What about the Director?”
“Sorry, I resigned.”
Su Jiang’s mood wasn’t great at the moment. After saying those words, he didn’t look back and went downstairs, ready to leave the Inspectorate.
Yang stood there in confusion, not understanding what had happened.
All he knew was that the psychiatrist they finally got was about to leave.
At that moment, without bothering to understand the situation, Yang quickly ran up to stop Su Jiang.
“Doctor Su, let’s talk things out calmly. Don’t act impulsively. Why did you resign?”
“Why, am I not allowed to quit anymore?”
“How could you do this? You just signed a contract. If you resign now, you’ll have to pay a penalty.”
Upon hearing about the penalty, Su Jiang was stunned. After a moment of pause, he said, “Then I won’t resign.”
Upon hearing that, a smile appeared on Yang’s face. He finally managed to persuade Su Jiang to stay.
“I’m off duty.”
Su Jiang said and continued downstairs. When he reached the ground floor, he noticed a group of people eavesdropping on his conversation with Yang at the staircase.
“Hey, Doctor Su, it’s against the rules to leave early here.”
Following Su Jiang downstairs, Yang also gave a stern look to the confused onlookers, wondering why they were eavesdropping at this hour.
Su Jiang ignored those people and turned to Yang, saying matter-of-factly, “What do you mean by leaving early? I’m not feeling well, feeling depressed. I need to go back and adjust. Any problems with that?”
Then, he turned back to the group of nosy individuals and asked again.
“Do you think there’s a problem?”
“No problem!”
The crowd answered in unison, their gazes towards Su Jiang now different.
If they once viewed each other as adversaries, it was clear they now saw Su Jiang as one of their own.
Look at that! Look at how they handle things!
Just joined the team and already understands our unit’s intricacies and operates effortlessly.
This is talent. This is the psychiatrist they need.
Though they hadn’t communicated verbally, they had already solidified a shared belief.
Su Jiang absolutely cannot leave!
They need a psychiatrist like him!
“You see, they said there’s no problem.”
Su Jiang said something to Yang and then pushed open the door without looking back, leaving the Inspectorate.
“Oh, Doctor Su…”
Yang called out persistently, but Su Jiang didn’t turn back.
Turning around, he gave a fierce glare at the group of people who had agreed with him, a look of disappointment on his face.
Afterward, Yang hurried back upstairs. He wanted to ask the Director why Su Jiang’s attitude had changed after a brief conversation. What did they talk about?
…
“Hey, back so soon, Doctor Su?”
Li Cai, smoking a cigarette, teased as he looked at Su Jiang getting into the car.
However, he quickly noticed that Su Jiang didn’t look too good and promptly inquired about what had happened.
“It’s all out in the open now. The Director of the Inspectorate, surname Zheng, do you know him?”
“Ah? I remember the Director of the Inspectorate was surnamed Chen, not Zheng?”
“What’s that got to do with anything?”
“It was a while ago, but Directors of the Inspectorate usually don’t change.”
Upon hearing this, Su Jiang directly raised his middle finger to Li Cai.
Damn it, Li Cai, you really are something.
You dare not to bring up information a while back!
“Anyway, let’s talk about it later. It seems like the Inspectorate issue is no longer relevant.”
So, they returned home.
As soon as they stepped inside, they saw An Rou leaning on the table, writing something with a lack of energy. Next to her, several sheets of paper were piled up, filled with densely packed words.
Upon hearing their footsteps, An Rou suddenly looked up, tears welling up in her eyes when she saw Su Jiang and Li Cai.
“Wah… you’re finally back.”
The young girl threw the pen aside and immediately collapsed on the soft couch, rubbing her wrists. Her hands were almost writing to the point of breaking.
Seeing the situation, both Su Jiang and Li felt a bit guilty for involving An Rou to some extent in their troubles.
“We’re back. How’s everything?”
An Mingjie looked at the two of them, not mentioning the matter of the photo. It was better to discuss important matters first.
After all, they dared not spread rumors carelessly. If the photo were to be leaked, it would definitely implicate one of them.
When that happened, they would both be in trouble.
