Chapter 10: Wu Jinhua’s Gratitude
Normally, Zhao Weiguo wouldn’t say such things. Under normal circumstances, he would usually favour Li Lijuan.
But today, Zhao Weiguo felt that it was a bit too much to let Zhao Xiulan handle the dinner alone.
Zhao Xiulan didn’t expect Zhao Weiguo to say such words, nor did she expect her usually biased father to stand on her side this time.
But this was a good sign!
She would work hard to win back Zhao Weiguo’s affection from Ma Yumei and her daughter, and bring it back to her and Zhao Xiu Zhu.
Dinner was still simple.
A bowl of thin porridge with few grains of rice, and a steamed bun with stalks of straw in it.
It wasn’t tasty, and it didn’t fill the stomach at all.
After returning to her room, Zhao Xiulan quickly took out a cup of Eight Treasure Porridge and an egg from her space, and ate to fill her stomach.
In this era of scarcity, life was indeed difficult.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t take things out of the space. She had to think of a legitimate way to bring some things back.
Not only was her food insufficient, but Zhao Weiguo and Zhao Xiu Zhu’s food also needed improvement.
Especially Zhao Xiu Zhu, who had become thin. Eating only a bowl of thin soup-like porridge and a steamed bun every day wouldn’t provide enough nutrition.
Waiting for everyone to rest, Zhao Xiulan took out another boiled egg from the space and handed it to Zhao Xiu Zhu.
“Xiu Zhu, here, eat the egg.”
Even in the dark night, Zhao Xiu Zhu’s eyes sparkled with curiosity as she looked at Zhao Xiulan. “Sister, how do you still have eggs?”
Zhao Xiulan made up a reason, “I saved Goudan today, and the production team leader rewarded me with this.”
Children are simple-minded, so she believed Zhao Xiulan’s words. But instead of accepting it, Zhao Xiu Zhu pushed it back to Zhao Xiulan. “Sister, you eat it. You’re sick, so you should eat something!”
“If I’m giving it to you, then take it. The team leader gave me two, and I already ate mine in secret.”
Hearing Zhao Xiulan’s words, Zhao Xiu Zhu finally accepted it.
Children of her age have no resistance to boiled eggs. She quickly peeled it and ate it carefully.
While eating, Zhao Xiu Zhu whispered, “Sister, boiled eggs are so delicious! If I could have them every day, that would be great. No, even once a month or every six months would be good for such delicious things!”
Zhao Xiulan patted Zhao Xiu Zhu’s head. “With sister here, I’ll find a way to get them for you in the future!”
Although she knew that this situation was difficult to achieve, Zhao Xiu Zhu still looked forward to it.
Early the next morning, Zhao Weiguo went to work first and would come back later for breakfast.
However, Wu Jinhua came early, carrying a basket of ten jins of sweet potatoes to express her gratitude to Zhao Xiulan.
For Wu Jinhua, Zhao Xiulan saving Goudan’s life was a huge favour. Whatever good things they had at home, she hurriedly brought them to Zhao Xiulan to show her gratitude.
Unfortunately, rural people were very poor, and their food was insufficient. Wu Jinhua’s family didn’t have much to offer either, so sweet potatoes were all they could afford.
In a situation where even, rural people struggled to have enough food, Wu Jinhua’s gesture of bringing ten jins of sweet potatoes was already very generous.
Zhao Xiulan happened to be in the yard when Wu Jinhua arrived. Seeing her, Wu Jinhua warmly called out to her from a distance, “Xiulan!”
Seeing Wu Jinhua approaching, Zhao Xiulan smiled and asked, “Auntie Jinhua, why are you here?”
