Chapter 11: Untitled
Feng San looked at Li Li as he spoke. She immediately stood up and walked over.
“Li Li, she really looks like your younger sister! Right, Brother Feng, look at that little girl—she’s all alone. Let’s bring her along. That way, she’ll be safer too.”
Xin’er looked at them coldly. What an act—they clearly have bad intentions.
Feng San said, looking at Li Li’s face, “Little girl, come with us. Don’t worry, whatever food we have, you’ll get to eat first.”
People around them were jealous. They also wanted to be taken along, also wanted to have food.
Xin’er looked at the meat in Li Li’s hand and said, “Your meat stinks.”
Then she pulled a paper packet from her clothes. When she opened it, it revealed a large chicken drumstick.
As everyone stared in shock, she took a big bite.
Then, still eating, she walked out of the ruined temple and could be heard muttering, “Bunch of idiots, trying to scam a kid?”
Just as they were about to chase after her, Ah Da turned around and made a threatening move toward them.
They could only watch helplessly as Xin’er walked farther and farther away.
Li Li listened to the words being said, her chest heaving in anger. Feng San turned and slapped her across the face.
“Useless! Can’t even trick one person.”
The slap turned Li Li’s face sideways. She covered her swollen cheek and immediately said, “Sorry, Brother Feng. I messed it up this time. Next time, I’ll make sure I get it done right.”
Feng San didn’t bother with her anymore. He cursed a few times, then went back to sit down and started eating wowo tou (a type of steamed cornbread) and some unidentifiable meat.
Li Li lowered her head, eyes full of hatred. It’s all because of that little bitch. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have been hit. I’ll make sure she ends up just like me.
But Feng San hadn’t given up. He and a few of his men hurriedly finished their food, packed up, and went after Xin’er.
Xin’er hadn’t eaten her fill earlier, so she walked and ate with Ah Da.
People on the road looked on, their envy deepening—even a dog was eating better than they were.
Ah Da heard someone call him a dog and bared his teeth at them.
“You’re the dogs! Your whole family’s dogs!”
He scared the passersby away and happily returned to eating his drumstick.
The fleeing people muttered, “That dog’s terrifying—let’s go, it’s going to bite someone!”
Feng San and his group hurried along and finally caught up. Seeing how well Xin’er was eating made him all the more determined. If I could get this girl, then all her food would be mine.
She’s way better than that woman Li Li, Feng San thought, quickening his pace.
Li Li, following behind, gnashed her teeth. Feng San, one day, I’m going to kill you.
Feng San and a few of his men trailed behind Xin’er, not too far, not too close.
Xin’er strolled casually, stopping here and there like she was playing. Everything was new and interesting to her—after all, it was her first time leaving the Li family village.
Even though there wasn’t much to see on the road, her curious gaze couldn’t be dampened.
To outsiders, it looked like a barren wasteland with nothing at all.
Everyone else walking was exhausted and panting like oxen, but Xin’er drank water when she was thirsty, ate meat when she was hungry.
Feng San watched her, his eyes nearly turning green with envy. Where did this little girl get so much good food? And what exactly is she carrying in that bundle of hers?
He even started to panic. If she keeps eating like this and runs out of food, what would be left for me to take?
Xin’er didn’t pay any mind to the people following her. Her steps were light as she walked along the road.
But those behind her weren’t faring so well. The noon sun was scorching, and they were beginning to feel dizzy from the heat.
Feng San looked at the girl ahead. She didn’t stop, just kept walking. He didn’t want to give up either, so he forced himself to keep going.
Xin’er saw a small grove ahead, so she went in, found a large tree, laid out her bedding, and sat down.
Li Li sighed in relief. If she hadn’t stopped, she would’ve collapsed soon.
In her heart, she was bitterly angry. How can she walk so much? Her face isn’t even flushed, and she’s not out of breath.
But look at me—sweating like a pig, hair all messy, clothes soaked through.
Feng San and his group sat not far from Xin’er, gasping for breath. They took out their water and their rock-hard wowo tou.
While eating, they kept a close eye on Xin’er.
They watched as she ate—fresh fruit, a big chicken drumstick.
Where is she getting all this stuff? That bundle of hers is so small, yet it feels like it never runs out.
Feng San’s eyes suddenly lit up. She must have some kind of magical treasure that stores food!
He felt like he had just uncovered a huge secret.
