Chapter 10: The Scumbag Wants His White Moonlight to Be the Nanny at Home
Before Lin Yuefeng and Shen Wu could say anything, Jiang Yubai went on:
“Dad, Mom, your maternity leave is almost up. Jianxue is busy at the cultural troupe, and my mom is home alone taking care of the baby. It’s too much for her. Hiring a nanny would help lighten the load.”
Tong Caihe rubbed her aching waist and quickly nodded in agreement.
Sure enough, her son was the only one who truly cared about her.
She was absolutely exhausted these past few days.
Lin Yuefeng and Lin Jianxue practically treated her like a pack mule.
Lin Jianxue was quietly eating fish when she paused at his words. Lifting her head, she looked directly at Jiang Yubai and said, “Aren’t you still at home? Why hire a nanny when you’re free?”
Jiang Yubai was momentarily stunned by the sharp reply, his smile faltering. He took a deep breath, forced a gentle expression, and explained softly, “Jianxue, it’s just that I’m going to the steel factory with Dad soon. I won’t have time to help take care of Xiaohu.”
“The steel factory?”
Lin Jianxue furrowed her brows slightly.
She remembered now—back in her previous life, not long after Shen Wu’s difficult labor, Lin Yuefeng arranged for Jiang Yubai to intern at the steel factory.
Later, relying on his connection to Lin Yuefeng, Jiang Yubai secured a clerical job there, moved his household registration to the capital, and when Lin Yuefeng had his accident, he even inherited the factory director’s position.
This time around, she wasn’t going to let Jiang Yubai continue to leech off her family.
With that in mind, she looked up at Lin Yuefeng and asked, “Dad, is that true?”
Lin Yuefeng was busy picking bones from fish for Shen Wu. He carefully removed every large and small bone, then placed a small, tender piece of white fish on Shen Wu’s plate.
Without looking up, he casually replied, “Yes, it’s true. Yubai graduated from high school, and the factory happens to need a clerical worker. His education meets the requirement. But since he’s new, he’ll need to get familiar with the environment, so I plan to have him start in the workshop with me for a while.”
Hearing this, Lin Jianxue calmly put down her chopsticks and said slowly, “Dad, there’s no rush. Xiaohu is just a month old and still needs constant care.”
Then she turned to Jiang Yubai and Tong Caihe with a smile.
“How about this—let Yubai and Auntie stay home to help take care of the baby. Once Xiaohu turns one, it won’t be too late for him to join the factory. Besides, I don’t feel comfortable leaving the baby with a stranger.”
Her words made Jiang Yubai’s face darken instantly.
He felt a surge of frustration—what was with this woman lately? She was opposing him at every turn. First, she ordered him around; now she wanted to keep him at home as a babysitter.
He was a man! Why should he be stuck changing diapers, cooking, and babysitting all day?
Suppressing his anger, Jiang Yubai forced a smile and explained, “Jianxue, it’s not a stranger. I have a younger sister who just graduated from middle school. She’s been helping raise kids back home and has experience. If you all agree, I can bring her over to help take care of Xiaohu. She won’t even ask for a salary—just food and lodging.”
Lin Jianxue sneered inwardly.
So that’s the plan.
In her past life, Xiaohu died young, so Jiang Yuning never had the chance to move into the Lin household.
But this time, with Xiaohu alive, they were already scheming to move her in and take over!
Well, that was fine too. She had been looking for a reason to kick these leeches out—if they insisted on delivering themselves, she wouldn’t hold back.
Feigning curiosity, Lin Jianxue asked, “Sister? But I thought you were an only child?”
Jiang Yubai was caught off guard, his smile freezing. He hadn’t expected that question.
But Tong Caihe jumped in quickly to cover for him.
“Oh dear, my memory is getting bad. I forgot to mention it—it’s not his biological sister, it’s a cousin, Jiang Yuning. She’s 18 this year, just a month younger than Jianxue.”
“But that girl is so hardworking! Back in the village, she was always helping the neighbors take care of kids, and everyone praised her!”
As she spoke, she kept signaling subtly at Jiang Yubai.
He nodded in agreement and added, “She’s my uncle’s daughter. She’s free these days and could come right away.”
Lin Jianxue took it all in with a cold smile but remained expressionless. She turned to Lin Yuefeng and Shen Wu and asked, “Dad, Mom, what do you think?”
Lin Yuefeng and Shen Wu exchanged glances, both clearly hesitant.
Though the girl was a relative of Jiang Yubai’s, they had never met her, and handing over their child to a stranger still felt unsettling.
But they also knew that once their leave ended, they’d both have to return to work. Their daughter was busy with her job at the troupe too.
Tong Caihe, handling everything alone, truly couldn’t manage.
After thinking it over, Lin Yuefeng finally nodded and said, “If she’s family, then we can trust her. Xiaohu is a handful—always fussy and restless. Your mom really can’t do it all herself.”
Then he turned to Jiang Yubai and added, “How about this—if your cousin is willing to help out, she should get paid. We’ll give her 5 yuan a month along with food and board, and she can help for a year. How’s that sound?”
Jiang Yubai and Tong Caihe exchanged a look, clearly pleased with the outcome.
Over the past few days, Jiang Yuning had physically recovered well, but emotionally she was still fragile after losing the baby. She clung to Jiang Yubai more than ever, unwilling to be apart from him.
Jiang Yubai felt for her and wished he could always be by her side.
But with his new job at the steel factory, he wouldn’t be able to see her daily. Getting her into the Lin household was the safest plan.
He had been worried that the Lin family would refuse—but they had agreed so easily!
He couldn’t wait to tell Yuning the good news. She’d be thrilled.
Thinking that, a smile naturally crept onto his face.
Tong Caihe was overjoyed. She quickly agreed, “That’s great! I’ll send a telegram to Yuning first thing tomorrow so she can start packing! But—dear in-law—you really don’t need to be so generous. We’re already providing room and board. Five yuan a month might be too much…”
But before she could finish, Lin Jianxue interrupted with a smile:
“Auntie Tong, you’re right. Five yuan is a bit much. Let’s make it two yuan instead. After all, since Yuning will be living and eating with us, she really won’t need much.”
Jiang Yubai’s face turned green instantly.
He shot Tong Caihe an angry glare—Why did you have to open your mouth?!
Now they had just lost three yuan a month for no reason.
Tong Caihe had only meant to be polite—she never imagined Lin Jianxue would actually cut the pay.
But what’s done is done. She forced a smile and said awkwardly, “Jianxue is right. Two yuan should be enough for Yuning to use.”
