Chapter 5: The White Moonlight Drank the Poisoned Chicken Soup and Miscarried!
As dusk settled, dim yellow lights lit up the hospital, and the hallway was filled with the mixed scent of disinfectant and food.
Around seven or eight o’clock, Shen Wu suddenly gripped Lin Qiufeng’s hand tightly. Beads of sweat the size of peas rolled down her forehead, and her voice trembled, “Qiufeng… my stomach… it hurts so much…”
Lin Qiufeng was startled and immediately pressed the bedside call button, shouting anxiously, “Doctor! Doctor! Come quickly!”
The doctor rushed over, examined her, and said seriously, “She’s started having contractions. It’s time! The family needs to prepare the baby’s clothes, formula, and bottles.”
Tong Caihe quickly patted the bulging cloth bag she had brought and said warmly:
“I’ve got everything ready! I just went home and grabbed them. Look—baby clothes, baby blanket, formula, bottles—everything’s brand new. I sterilized everything with boiling water!”
As she spoke, she began showing the items one by one to Lin Qiufeng and Shen Wu.
Lin Qiufeng, distressed over his wife, felt deeply grateful for Tong Caihe’s thorough preparations. He thanked her repeatedly, “Mother-in-law, you’re so thoughtful. Thank you so much!”
Shen Wu forced a weak smile and said, “Thank you, mother-in-law.”
Tong Caihe waved her hand with a grin. “Oh, this is what I should do! We’re in-laws—soon we’ll all be family. No need to be so polite!”
She then placed a cleaned baby bottle on Shen Wu’s bedside cabinet and exchanged a glance with Jiang Yubai, who stood nearby.
Jiang Yubai gave a subtle nod.
The two of them shared an unspoken understanding.
Tong Caihe smirked slightly in satisfaction, silently pleased.
After drinking that drugged chicken soup, there’s no way Shen Wu’s pregnancy will go smoothly. Forget about the baby—even the mother might not survive!
Lin Jianxue stood silently on the side, catching every small movement between the mother and son, her eyes as cold as blades.
In her previous life, Shen Wu had died after hemorrhaging during childbirth—all because she drank the chicken soup that Tong Caihe brought.
Now that Lin Jianxue had a second chance, she would never let that tragedy happen again!
Time passed slowly. Shen Wu’s labor pains grew more frequent and intense.
She was drenched in sweat, her clothes soaked through like she had just been pulled out of water.
Lin Qiufeng’s eyes were red from heartbreak. He wished he could share the pain for her.
Around 9 p.m., the doctor came to check again and told Lin Qiufeng, “She’s fully dilated. Time to move her to the delivery room.”
A few nurses entered with a mobile stretcher and carefully transferred Shen Wu onto it.
Lin Qiufeng held her hand tightly, voice trembling, “Ah Wu, don’t be afraid. I’ll be waiting for you outside. You must come back safe…”
Shen Wu’s face was pale from pain, but she still forced a smile and comforted him, “Mm. I know. Don’t worry…”
As she was wheeled into the delivery room, Lin Jianxue’s heart clenched tight.
The red “In Surgery” sign outside the delivery room stung her eyes.
In her past life, this was the same door where she was told that only one life—mother or baby—could be saved.
Lin Jianxue clenched her fists so tightly her nails dug into her palms, but she didn’t feel a thing.
Just then, an old woman in a floral jacket came hurrying down the corridor.
She looked around anxiously, clearly searching for someone.
When she spotted Tong Caihe, her eyes lit up, and she rushed over.
Tong Caihe’s expression changed drastically when she saw the old woman. She quickly intercepted her and pulled her into a corner, lowering her voice:
“What are you doing here?! Why’d you come running over?!”
The old woman responded while gesturing urgently with her hands.
They spoke in their hometown dialect, which Lin Jianxue couldn’t understand.
But from the woman’s expression and frantic body language, it was clear—something serious had happened.
Sure enough, as soon as the woman finished speaking, Tong Caihe’s face went ghostly pale. She swayed on her feet as if she might faint at any moment.
Lin Jianxue’s eyes narrowed—she had a guess.
Could it be… something happened to Jiang Yuning?
That old woman must be the nanny Tong Caihe hired from their hometown to care for Jiang Yuning.
In her past life, after Jiang Yuning got pregnant, Tong Caihe had brought her to the capital, rented her an apartment, and arranged for a nanny from home to look after her.
Now, it must be that Jiang Yuning drank the same drugged chicken soup and something went wrong—hence the nanny rushing to the hospital in a panic.
Thinking of this, Lin Jianxue couldn’t help but curl her lips into a cold smile.
She deliberately nudged Jiang Yubai beside her and asked sweetly, “Yubai, what’s wrong with your mom? She looks so pale. Did something happen?”
Jiang Yubai had been staring blankly at the delivery room door. Her question snapped him out of it.
He followed her gaze and saw Tong Caihe whispering in a corner with a plainly dressed old woman.
Recognizing the woman, his heart sank.
Why the hell is that old lady here? If the Lin family finds out about Yuning, we’re screwed!
He quickly suppressed his panic and forced a gentle smile. “Oh, probably something happened with one of my mom’s friends in the capital. I’ll go ask.”
He started walking toward Tong Caihe.
But Lin Jianxue grabbed his arm and said with a cheerful smile, “Then I’ll go with you! I’ve been wanting to meet Auntie Tong’s friend anyway.”
Faced with her bright smile, Jiang Yubai couldn’t refuse. He forced himself to nod. “Okay.”
The two of them walked up to Tong Caihe.
Tong Caihe was overwhelmed and distraught. When she saw her son approach, she clung to his arm like he was her lifeline, exclaiming urgently:
“Yubai, thank goodness you’re here…”
Before she could say more, Jiang Yubai cut her off.
“Mom, what’s going on? Is it your old friend’s daughter who had some trouble?”
Only then did Tong Caihe snap back to reality—Lin Jianxue was still standing right there.
She quickly cleared her throat and changed her tone. “Yes, yes, something happened to her. But she doesn’t have any family here, so the nanny came to me for help. I need to go check on them.”
Jiang Yubai’s face darkened slightly, but he nodded along. “Then go quickly, Mom. I’ll stay here.”
Lin Jianxue stood by, observing everything, her heart full of cold laughter.
Out loud, though, she smiled sweetly and said, “Auntie Tong, my mom’s still in labor, and you’re already leaving? We’re all family now—don’t you think family should come first over outsiders?”
She paused, then asked with innocent confusion, “Besides, if your old friend’s daughter had trouble, where’s her husband? Her in-laws? Why are you the one rushing over like this? Anyone who didn’t know better might think… your daughter-in-law was the one in trouble!”
