Chapter 35.2

“…!”

What was she doing?

Trying to soothe his anger with a hug?

Heh, was he that easily swayed?

Hey, hey, hey, don’t let go!!

Meng Zhengrong, worried Xu Yuan might let go, quickly pressed her hand down, pretending nothing was happening, “Of course, this isn’t your fault. You didn’t want it either. I know you haven’t been in contact with him during this time. The blame lies with Uncle and Aunt. They never had good intentions.”

The attitude shift was as fast as a tornado.

Xu Yuan didn’t know what to say, so she decided to say nothing.

She didn’t even know the nature of the original owner’s relationship with Chen Hao; she might not even recognize him if they met on the street.

Meng Zhengrong thought Xu Yuan was reflecting. As he smelled her fragrance, not only was he no longer angry, but his heart was melting.

“I mentioned this problem before. I had an ex before you. No one can guarantee that they will marry their first love, but after marriage, to respect each other’s feelings, there should be no contact with exes. This time, Uncle and Aunt were wrong. I’ve used this opportunity to make him retire. I’m sure they won’t have any objections. Xiao Yuan, we’re husband and wife. From now on, I only have you, so you should only have me. Is that okay?”

Actually, Meng Zhengrong didn’t intend to say this initially, but Xu Yuan’s hug softened him, and he couldn’t bring himself to scold her.

Strictly speaking, this issue wasn’t really her fault.

He knew she hadn’t contacted Chen Hao since their marriage, nor had they met. It was clear she wanted to break ties with the past.

If he could feel even a little affection from Xu Yuan, even just a tiny bit, he wouldn’t have been angry today, even if she had spoken with Chen Hao.

The anger wasn’t really about Chen Hao or this incident but about her lack of feelings for him. He was just looking for an excuse.

More than just having her by his side, he wanted her heart.

Xu Yuan fell silent after hearing Meng Zhengrong’s words.

She knew that Meng Zhengrong was a great partner. Besides his appearance, he had the work capability she admired and valued the most. He didn’t flirt around, and his character was decent.

He had all three of the most important qualities. Unless there was a drastic change, she wouldn’t divorce him, whether for their families or herself.

Before, she only focused on her career for her future because of her background. Now, things were different. She had to manage more than just her career; she had to care for her family as well.

To take it a step further, if the original owner suddenly returned one day, she would want to give her a life that wasn’t disrupted.

Meng Zhengrong was already actively changing their relationship; should she just stand by and ignore it?

If she didn’t want a divorce, she shouldn’t do things that would lead to one. Mother Xu’s words echoed in her mind once more.

“Okay.” Xu Yuan hugged him tighter, her eyes blinking with her eyelashes fluttering like a fan.

The two words didn’t seem enough, so Xu Yuan recalled the methods and words used by the concubines to charm the emperor and decided to apply them herself. “If it weren’t for completely breaking off from the past, how could I marry? Zhengrong, I’m not very proactive. Although I know you’re great, the impact of my previous relationship still lingers. I hope you don’t take to heart the things I did and said before. I’ve always been very clear about my own position…”

No matter how much Meng Zhengrong resembled the emperor, once they got to know each other better, they would be clearly different. Apart from their appearance, they were two completely different people.

Her aversion wasn’t just due to this reason; she also wasn’t good at these things.

She wasn’t skilled in other areas, but when it came to family life, she would actively learn. However, cultivating a relationship with Meng Zhengrong to become a good wife was something she didn’t understand. She had a private aversion because she felt that her ambition and past experiences made her resist being confined to such a narrow family role.

She shouldn’t be confined to this ordinary family life, should she?

But this is Xu Yuan’s life, and she now carries the label of being married. She can’t just tear off that label.

This isn’t just her life; it’s also others’. Within the limited scope, she should at least maintain the life she was supposed to live.

“So, don’t worry, I will only have you in the future.” Xu Yuan lifted her head to look at Meng Zhengrong and said with utmost sincerity.

Having received the desired response, Meng Zhengrong’s remaining emotions were completely dispelled.

Although it wasn’t right to act like a rogue at this moment, there were still some things that needed to be confirmed.

Such conversations had occurred before, and afterward, their relationship had reverted to one resembling that of roommates more than spouses.

Meng Zhengrong stared into her eyes, suppressing his inner embarrassment, and asked, “Can I kiss you whenever I want in the future?”

Was there anyone as timid as him? After months of marriage, it was his first time kissing his wife.

It turned out that for a relationship to develop rapidly, physical contact was essential.

He didn’t actually want to ask this directly; it felt quite awkward. But if he didn’t have her consent, he didn’t want to be too casual.

Experiencing a kiss for the first time, he felt as if he was back at fifteen or sixteen years old.

He had an innocence that didn’t match his age, cough.

Xu Yuan wanted to say no, but after looking at Meng Zhengrong, she knew her response was crucial. It would determine whether their marriage was genuine or just a facade.

“Okay.” Meng Zhengrong didn’t know how much determination Xu Yuan had mustered or how she had forced herself to answer.

Meng Zhengrong was delighted to hear this. Looking at her lips, he couldn’t help but feel proud and leaned down to kiss her again.

Seeing that Xu Yuan didn’t show any signs of disgust or intention to hit him, he felt completely relieved.

He also wanted to ask if they could have sex, but he found it too embarrassing to ask directly. Moreover, getting such progress today was already a pleasant surprise, so he shouldn’t push his luck.

I’m glad Xu Yuan is being more considerate of their relationship, but it’s disappointing that a large part of her reasoning is not because she personally wants a happy marriage with Meng Zhengrong, but rather she feels she has to do it for the sake of the original owner. It feels like a cop-out reason, like she’s being “forced” to pursue a happy marriage with him when she doesn’t even have to stay married at all.

    Thanks for the chapter! 😀
