1980s: The Scheming Officer Fell for Me After Reading My Mind Chapter 49

Chapter 49: Let’s Get Married!

Su Yi had originally intended to ask Zhou Jinchuan what had been bothering him lately, hoping to understand his recent unusual behavior. She thought that the gossip from before had mostly died down.

To her surprise, it had escalated into something this significant. And throughout it all, Zhou Jinchuan hadn’t mentioned a word about it to her. Not only had he not brought it up, but he also took the initiative to bring the three of them to the county town for shopping. Instead of maintaining distance, he seemed to be even more affectionate than before.

What was he planning to tell his superiors?

While Su Yi was lost in thought, Zhou Jinchuan had already returned with the two children.

The two children excitedly handed over their purchases as soon as they got into the car, and Zhou Jinchuan naturally passed Su Yi an ice cream.

“I wasn’t sure what flavor you’d like, so I got red bean and green bean,” he said.

Su Yi was momentarily taken aback but quickly took one of the ice creams with a smile, “Thank you!”

Since learning about the recent issues, Su Yi couldn’t help but feel that Zhou Jinchuan’s every action seemed off.

Could he be trying to turn their pretend relationship into something real?

She quickly dismissed the thought. Zhou Jinchuan was notoriously difficult; in the book, even after being pursued by Bai Ruolin for hundreds of chapters, he hadn’t yielded. It seemed unlikely he would suddenly develop genuine feelings.

However, after this incident, Su Yi was determined. She planned to discuss with Zhou Jinchuan the possibility of moving to the dormitory.

Su Yi had originally been considering whether to move into the dormitory, planning to wait until Ye Nuannuan started preschool. But now, she thought it might be better to move sooner rather than later.

After they dropped off the three at home, Zhou Jinchuan was planning to return with Xie Xiaojun.

However, Su Yi took the initiative to ask him to stay. “Zhou Jinchuan, do you have some time now? I have something I want to discuss with you.”

Zhou Jinchuan was momentarily surprised. He had sensed something was off with her since they returned. Everything seemed fine during shopping and the photoshoot, but her demeanor had changed after they separated to find Xie Xiaojun.

He wondered if Xie Xiaojun had said something to her.

As Zhou Jinchuan glanced at Xie Xiaojun while getting out of the car, he saw Xie Xiaojun awkwardly turning his head away, which gave him a pretty good idea of what might have happened.

Su Yi brought the purchased items into the house and told the two kids to go outside and play with their snacks. She then poured a glass of water for Zhou Jinchuan and took a seat.

Zhou Jinchuan sat up straight, and seeing her serious demeanor made him inexplicably nervous.

Su Yi paused for a moment before speaking. “Zhou Jinchuan, since Nuannuan will soon be going to preschool, I won’t need to stay at home all the time. I was thinking it might be better to move into the dormitory sooner rather than later.”

Zhou Jinchuan was taken aback. “You want to move out?”

Seeing his surprise, Su Yi explained further. “Since you’re living in the dormitory, it’s not ideal. If I move out, you can move back, and it would help avoid any unnecessary gossip about you, which could be detrimental.”

Zhou Jinchuan’s eyelid twitched. “Did Xie Xiaojun say something to you? You don’t need to worry about it.”

Su Yi shook her head. “I was going to move out eventually. I didn’t have a job or a place to stay before, but now that I can apply for a dormitory, it wouldn’t be right to stay here any longer.”

Zhou Jinchuan pressed his lips together. “Xiaowu and Nuannuan need you.”

Su Yi looked up at him. “I’ll continue to take care of the kids. They can come to the dining hall to find me after school. If you have to go on a business trip, I can come over.”

Zhou Jinchuan searched for words, remaining silent for a while. “Do you really have to move out?”

Seeing his insistence, Su Yi felt a bit anxious. “Are you planning to keep me here forever if I don’t move out?”

Zhou Jinchuan paused, as if summoning a great deal of courage. “Well, if you don’t move out, we could get married. That way, you’d have a legitimate reason to stay here.”

Su Yi was stunned. “What???!!!”

Thinking she hadn’t understood, Zhou Jinchuan clarified, “I mean, we get married first, then transfer your household registration and adopt Xiaowu and Nuannuan. That way, you can stay here without worrying about any gossip.”

Su Yi: It’s not that she didn’t understand; she just had no idea why Zhou Jinchuan suddenly brought up marriage!

Su Yi’s thoughts raced with questions:

[Isn’t the usual order: first, develop mutual feelings, then confess, date and adjust, and finally get married?]

[Why is he jumping straight to marriage?]

[What kind of direct male thought process is this?]

On the surface, she remained stunned, staring at Zhou Jinchuan. Zhou Jinchuan, on the other hand, seemed momentarily taken aback by her reaction.

[If he’s decided on marriage, why bother with all those steps first? Besides, my marriage report won’t come through immediately. We’ll have plenty of time to adjust during this period.] he thought.

They both stared at each other for a while, each lost in thought.

Finally, Su Yi cleared her throat, lowering her long lashes. “Zhou Jinchuan, don’t joke around. Is this really your solution to dealing with the leadership’s concerns?”

Zhou Jinchuan, maintaining a serious expression, replied, “Of course not.”

Su Yi gave a self-deprecating smile. “Then why? Do you actually like me?”

Zhou Jinchuan, for the first time, was so nervous that his palms were sweating. He fumbled with the tea cup, trying to cover up his unease. “Yes!”

Su Yi forced a smile. “I don’t agree.”

Zhou Jinchuan’s hand shook, causing water to spill from the cup. “Why not?”

“I feel like we don’t even know each other well. I know nothing about you, and you don’t know the real me.”

“Even if there’s some temporary affection, it’s just a fleeting impulse. Am I supposed to bet a lifetime on a whim? That’s too casual.”

Zhou Jinchuan felt a pang of bitterness in his heart. He wanted to say that he understood her better than she thought, and that she also knew him well. But he couldn’t bring himself to say it.

After a moment of silence, Zhou Jinchuan suddenly asked, “Is it because of Xu Bin?”

Su Yi was initially taken aback, then remembered Xu Bin was Xu Xiaoqin’s brother.

“What does Xu Bin have to do with this?”

Zhou Jinchuan scrutinized her, but seeing her unmoved expression, was about to say something else when the phone rang. He stood up to answer it.

Once he was gone, Su Yi exhaled deeply.

Everything felt like a dream, so surreal!

She had stayed not because of any special feelings for Zhou Jinchuan but simply because she didn’t want to return to her hometown. She was trying to earn some money, build a little stability, and keep an eye out for Bai Ruolin’s reincarnation.

As for Zhou Jinchuan, she only had a desire to help, never any romantic intentions.

Su Yi felt that dating and marriage were completely out of her current plans.

Although Zhou Jinchuan’s sudden proposal had made her heart skip a few beats, it wasn’t enough to make her abandon all her plans.

Marriage was a lifelong commitment, and she couldn’t accept something so casually decided.

After the call, Zhou Jinchuan seemed to have something that required his immediate attention or was perhaps using it as a delaying tactic.

Once the call ended, he said to Su Yi, “Consider what we discussed earlier. There’s no need to rush your answer.”

Su Yi didn’t want to prolong the discussion. “Comrade Zhou, I really can’t agree to this.”

She then took out fifty yuan from her pocket and handed it over. “This is for the clothes we bought today.”

Seeing the money extended towards him, Zhou Jinchuan understood her resolve. After a moment of silence, he finally spoke,

“I’ll accept the money. Forget what I said today. Go ahead and apply for the dormitory.”
