Chapter 93
Lu Weiguo did not expect this situation.
He sat up, feeling the urge to run outside again.
Shi Tingyu pinched his chest, eliciting a muffled grunt from the man before she let go. “Wei Jian has already been caught; a few more hours won’t make a difference.”
In the end, Lu Weiguo stayed in bed.
He needed to catch up on sleep, or else he would be groggy and unable to think clearly the next day.
Glancing outside, Shi Tingyu estimated that she wouldn’t be able to sleep any longer and started to get up, but Lu Weiguo pulled her back into his arms.
“Stay with me.”
Shi Tingyu protested, “But it’s getting late.”
Lu Weiguo checked the watch on the bedside table. “It’s only five o’clock. You can sleep a bit more.”
Unable to resist his insistence, and feeling sorry for her man who had worked all night, Shi Tingyu snuggled into his arms and fell asleep.
Despite her earlier insistence that it was late, she was soon breathing evenly, fast asleep.
Watching her unguarded face, Lu Weiguo felt a swell of emotion in his chest.
Shi Tingyu slept so deeply that even the morning bugle call didn’t wake her.
Lu Weiguo woke up instinctively.
He pulled on his pants and, bare-chested, went to the kitchen to retrieve the bones.
Lijian wagged its tail happily.
Seeing this, Lu Weiguo said, “Lijian, sit.”
Lijian perked its ears and instantly sat down.
He placed the bone in Lijian’s bowl, still with plenty of meat on it, making the dog’s mouth water.
But it stayed sitting, perfectly behaved.
Lu Weiguo felt gratified and praised, “Very good. The bone is too hot now. Wait a bit before eating.”
Lijian seemed to understand and barked at him, spraying Lu Weiguo’s hand with saliva.
Shaking his head helplessly, Lu Weiguo quickly washed his hands.
Otherwise, his wife would disdain him.
Once the bone had cooled enough, he allowed Lijian to eat.
Lijian enjoyed its well-earned meat bone with great satisfaction.
Lu Weiguo didn’t idle either. He put millet and pumpkin porridge on the stove.
Millet and pumpkin weren’t anything special, but his wife loved them.
He also made some pancakes on the stove.
The first two pancakes were a bit burnt, so he ate them himself. The next few turned out better and went onto a plate.
He hadn’t made enough dough, so he looked around to make something else.
Finally, he found a bag of “Granny’s Vegetables” in the kitchen cupboard.
These were given by an old lady from Hunan Province because her grandson had gotten a tomato from his wife.
His wife could eat spicy food, so he chopped some chili peppers and mixed them with two eggs to fry with the Granny’s Vegetables. It would go well with the porridge.
When the food was ready, Lu Weiguo went to wake Shi Tingyu.
She must have had a restless night, or she would have been up by now.
Hearing him call, Shi Tingyu looked at her watch. It was already nearly half-past seven, and she jumped out of bed.
“Take it easy,” Lu Weiguo steadied her. “Getting up too quickly can make you dizzy.”
Shi Tingyu said anxiously, “It’s late, and I haven’t made breakfast yet.”
She suddenly looked up at him. “You didn’t have morning training today?”
Lu Weiguo nodded. “Captain Zhao gave us the morning off.”
Shi Tingyu relaxed, no longer in a hurry.
After washing up, she eagerly ate the breakfast laid out on the table.
The pancakes Lu Weiguo made weren’t great – the dough wasn’t fermented, the filling wasn’t right, and the heat was off, either too raw or a bit burnt.
But Shi Tingyu ate with relish.
The porridge and Granny’s Vegetables he made turned out delicious, though.
She drank two bowls.
When it was time, Shi Tingyu grabbed her bag and headed to school.
Lu Weiguo washed the dishes, tidied the vegetable garden, and tended to the plants before stopping.
Staying at home was boring, so he went to the camp.
Over there, Wei Jian was being interrogated.
When he arrived, Wei Jian hadn’t confessed yet.
Captain Zhao saw him and asked, “Didn’t I give you all the morning off? Why are you here?”
“My wife went to work. I had nothing to do at home, so I came over,” Lu Weiguo replied.
Captain Zhao gave him a look. “You’re a workaholic.”
Lu Weiguo smiled and went over to discuss his analysis of Wei Jian from the previous night.
Captain Zhao’s expression grew more serious as he listened.
He called the interrogator over, whispered a few words to him, and then sent him back to continue the interrogation.
This time, Wei Jian admitted his identity as a spy.
The interrogator came out with a puzzled expression. “Captain, I asked about his research results and then hinted about foreign connections, as you suggested. His face changed immediately.”
It was also at that time that Wei Jian admitted his identity.
The feeling was akin to a situation where one sacrifices a pawn to save the king.
“Keep digging,” ordered Captain Zhao.
Now more convinced of what Lu Weiguo had just told him, Captain Zhao realized Wei Jian’s identity was not simple.
However, despite further questioning, there was little progress.
Captain Zhao, along with Lu Weiguo, stepped out, somewhat sighing, “You really are quick-witted.”
Lu Weiguo shook his head, “It was my wife who discovered it.”
Hearing Lu Weiguo mention Shi Tingyu, Captain Zhao was surprised and then remarked, “It’s a pity someone as observant as your wife isn’t in the military.”
“My wife’s interests lie elsewhere,” Lu Weiguo replied. His wife loved and was passionate about painting and wasn’t very interested in other things.
Captain Zhao suggested, “It doesn’t matter if her interests aren’t here. Your wife is capable. Next time, let her give a lesson to our soldiers in the interrogation room.”
“Her theories on micro-expressions and innovative investigation ideas would be valuable for them to learn.”
Lu Weiguo felt conflicted. The whole incident with Wei Jian began with the portrait Shi Tingyu helped draw. They managed to catch Wei Jian this time, but if they hadn’t, his wife might have been exposed.
Being targeted by spies would be extremely dangerous.
Seeing Lu Weiguo’s expression, Captain Zhao reassured him, “Don’t worry. We’ll ensure that only trusted people attend the lesson, and you can sit in as well. If anything happens, you can handle it promptly.”
Lu Weiguo didn’t agree immediately, only saying, “I’ll ask my wife after she gets off work.”
Captain Zhao had no objections to this.
Exceptional talents deserve such consideration.
Before they could return, people from Zhu Family Village arrived.
Led by the team leader, Liu Wang and Zhu You were with them.
Lu Weiguo had already informed Captain Zhao about yesterday’s events, and Captain Zhao decided to meet these people personally.
This situation owed much to the team leader and Zhu You, without whom Wei Jian wouldn’t have been caught so quickly.
Captain Zhao planned to reward the two of them and also give some recognition to Lijian, the military dog without official status, for its contributions.
