Chapter 118

All the luggage was placed in the northern room, and Shi Tingyu and Lu Weiguo began to tidy up.

Lu Weiguo took care of toiletries and such.

Shi Tingyu took out the cotton jackets she had bought for Lu’s father and mother and brought them over.

Seeing the daughter-in-law bringing out clothes, Lu’s father and mother put down the vegetables they were picking and stood up.

Shi Tingyu said, “Mom, Dad, these are clothes we bought for you. Try them on to see if they fit.”

Lu’s mother smiled so much her mouth almost couldn’t close, but she couldn’t help but mutter a few words, “We’re at this age, there’s no need for new clothes. Save the money for you young folks.”

Shi Tingyu replied, “We’re not around often enough to take care of you, so we wanted to buy you some clothes to show our filial piety.”

Lu’s mother felt a bit distressed about the money, but she was genuinely happy to see the new clothes.

At that moment, Lu Weiguo came out of the room and said, “Mom, Dad, try them on to see if they fit. These were bought according to your previous sizes. It would be a waste of money if they don’t fit.”

Upon hearing this, Lu’s father and mother quickly tried them on.

Lu’s mother looked pleased as the cotton jackets fit perfectly on them.

The cotton jacket was a purplish-red color, not highly saturated, but it looked very flattering, unlike the current floral cotton jackets. It had a removable gray rabbit fur collar on the collar and beautiful button loops, giving it a stylish look.

“Thank goodness I haven’t gained weight these past few years, or else I wouldn’t be able to fit into such a nice cotton jacket,” she said, turning around in front of Lu Daming. “What do you think? Does it look good? This fur collar looks expensive.”

Lu Daming happily looked at Lu’s mother and nodded repeatedly, “It looks good, like those old ladies in big cities.”

Lu’s mother was delighted by Lu’s father’s praise and urged him, “Try your clothes on quickly. I think that cotton jacket looks very neat and will make you look energetic.”

Lu’s father took off his old cotton jacket and put on the cotton jacket brought by Shi Tingyu.

Lu Weiguo helped Lu’s father button it up, patted his shoulder, adjusted the hem, and said, “Not bad, it fits well.”

More than just fitting well, due to trying on clothes, Lu’s father now stood tall and straight, looking quite spirited.

Lu’s mother watched Lu’s father and occasionally smoothed out the sleeves and sides of his clothes, exclaiming, “Where did you buy these clothes from the big city? They look so stylish.”

Lu’s father’s cotton jacket was black, styled like a Zhongshan suit, and looked very spirited when worn. You get what you pay for; this cotton jacket wasn’t cheap and was well-made, looking like something from a department store.

Lu’s father carefully felt the pockets and cuffs, confirming they were just the right size.

Lu Weiguo handed over two pairs of pants and shoes from Shi Tingyu to his parents. “Go back to the room and try on the pants and shoes.”

Lu’s father and mother didn’t refuse this time. They took the pants and shoes and went back to their room.

When the two came out, they looked quite different. Knowing their daughter-in-law was coming, Lu’s father and mother wore the best clothes from their wardrobe, but they still didn’t look as eye-catching as the new clothes.

Lu’s mother walked around a bit and said, “Hmm, very good, both fit well. I have to admit, new clothes are really warm.”

Lu’s father said, “Can they compare? These are all new cotton.”

Lu’s mother reluctantly took off the cotton jacket, “I’ll save this for wearing when visiting relatives on New Year’s Day.”

Then she made Lu’s father take off his clothes too, saying, “You quickly change into these clothes. Don’t get them dirty. Wear them when we go back to the village for the New Year, and you’ll definitely impress.”

Lu’s father readily took off the cotton jacket and said, “Even if you don’t wear new clothes, bringing our daughter-in-law back will still make us proud.”

Lu’s mother immediately smiled broadly, “I love hearing that.”

Even now, she was still feeling a bit floaty.

In her heart, she was still thinking, is this really her daughter-in-law? In this whole region, it’s hard to find a daughter-in-law with such outstanding looks.

If she didn’t know her son’s character, she would have been worried that her son was snatched away by this daughter-in-law.

Lu’s father and mother went to change clothes, while Shi Tingyu and Lu Weiguo returned to the room to continue organizing things.

Not long after, there was a knock on the door.

Lu Weiguo said, “The door’s not locked.”

Lu’s mother pushed the door open and entered, carefully carrying a bowl of something.

As she approached, Shi Tingyu saw that it was a bowl of red sugar and eggs.

Lu’s mother placed the steaming bowl of red sugar and eggs on the nearby table and called out to Shi Tingyu, “Xiaoyu, I made this red sugar and egg for you. It’s cold now, come and warm yourself up.”

Shi Tingyu didn’t hesitate and sat down at the table, “Thank you, Mom. I was getting a bit hungry.”

Lu’s mother couldn’t help but nod at her straightforward attitude. “This child is good, open-hearted.”

These eggs were from native chickens. Although they weren’t as big as modern foreign eggs, they were very flavorful. After eating one egg and drinking some warm red sugar water, Shi Tingyu felt warmth spreading in her stomach.

Lu’s mother had made quite a few eggs, a total of five. If the bowl could hold more, she probably would have made more.

Shi Tingyu ate two and gave the rest to Lu Weiguo.

Lu Weiguo picked up an egg and ate it, looking at Shi Tingyu, he said, “I’m enjoying this because of my wife.”

Lu’s mother laughed and scolded him, “You little rascal, how many times have I not made you something to eat?”

“Why didn’t you this time?” Lu Weiguo asked.

Lu’s mother was momentarily speechless. Their entire attention was focused on their daughter-in-law, and they had truly forgotten. However, Lu’s mother quickly added, “Even without you, there would still be eggs for you to eat.”

After the young couple finished the eggs and red sugar water, Lu’s mother took the bowl out. As she reached the door, she couldn’t help but turn back, “Xiaoyu, you must be tired from the journey. Just rest for now. I’ll call you when the meal is ready.”

With that, she closed the door before they could respond.

Shi Tingyu smiled as she looked at Lu Weiguo, “Your parents are really nice.”

Polite, straightforward, and warm.

Lu Weiguo corrected her, “They’re our parents.”

Shi Tingyu nodded, “I just said that to distinguish.”

Lu Weiguo got up and led her to the bed, “Rest on the bed for a while. I’ll call you when the food is ready.”

Shi Tingyu obediently got into bed. It had indeed been a tiring day.

Lu Weiguo neatly put away her down jacket, and while doing so, he tucked in her blanket properly before leaving. Shortly after, he came back with a saline bag.

“What’s this?” Shi Tingyu asked.

Lu Weiguo took out a pair of his new socks, put them on the saline bag, and then stuffed the bag into the blanket. “It’s filled with hot water to keep the bed warm.”

As soon as Shi Tingyu put her feet on it, she could feel the warmth. She had to move her feet away after a few seconds because it was a bit hot.

It was then that she realized saline bags could be used like this. In her original world, she was born far from the 1970s when rubber hot water bags, in red, green, and various other colors, were commonly used.

She had never used a saline bag like this before.
