Military Marriage in the ’70s: Her Popularity in the Family Compound After Joining the Army Chapter 156

Chapter 156

The old lady’s bed wasn’t large, but the two of them could squeeze in.

Lu Weiguo held Shi Tingyu tightly, afraid she might accidentally roll off the bed.

Shi Tingyu lifted her gaze to look at her husband, who had his eyes closed, and softly asked, “Did you hear everything between me and Shen Ziming today?”

Lu Weiguo’s hand paused momentarily as he patted her back and made a noncommittal sound.

“Feeling jealous?” Shi Tingyu asked. Although his behavior at the time didn’t reveal much, there were clearly more fidgety movements, like occasionally trying to hold her hand.

She wondered if this man, who tended to keep things to himself, should just speak openly to avoid unnecessary worries.

Lu Weiguo cleared his throat awkwardly, a hint of embarrassment on his face.

He felt that a grown man shouldn’t be jealous, but the thought of his wife nearly becoming someone else’s made him feel a bit sour.

Shi Tingyu knew his expression without needing to see his face and said, “You can rest assured. Shen Ziming and I met a few times before, but there was nothing romantic. The initial blind date was mainly because my parents were about to be sent away, and later on, he stood me up anyway.”

Lu Weiguo tightened his grip on her hand, then after a moment, he said, “I know.”

“You know what?”

“About your blind date getting stood up.”

This revelation caught Shi Tingyu by surprise. “How did you know?”

Lu Weiguo smiled faintly. “Because when you were having your blind date at the state-owned restaurant, I was having dinner nearby with Feng Wei.”

Shi Tingyu was astonished. So their first meeting was at that time?

“I’m grateful to Shen Ziming, though. If he had shown up, I might not have had any chance.”

Shi Tingyu chuckled at his comment.

With everything out in the open, both of them relaxed, quickly falling asleep.

Early the next morning, Shi Tingyu got up early to make breakfast for her elder brother.

Red date millet porridge with potato cakes.

Remembering the landlady’s kindness from the night before, Shi Tingyu had Lu Weiguo take a bowl of porridge and potato cakes to the old lady.

The landlady initially declined but eventually accepted, mainly due to Lu Weiguo’s culinary skills.

Shi Tingyu was grateful that their Weiguo was proficient in this regard, a boon for someone with social anxiety.

After breakfast, Shi Muhuan welcomed the doctor’s rounds.

During the dressing change, the doctor examined Shi Muhuan’s leg and exclaimed in surprise, “Your wound has healed remarkably well.”

Shi Tingyu silently observed the doctor’s expression. She hadn’t used much spiritual spring water; it shouldn’t have produced such miraculous effects.

The next moment, the doctor praised, “Being a young man with strong vitality, your recovery is impressive.”

Shi Muhuan smiled and replied, “Mainly because my sister came over and cooked three meals a day for me.”

He had no idea that his sister’s cooking had contributed to his rapid recovery.

After flipping through the medical records, the doctor said, “Are you planning to be discharged tomorrow?”

Shi Muhuan nodded eagerly. “Yes, my leg has recovered quite well. It’s a waste of hospital bed space to stay here all the time.”

The doctor chuckled and gave him a once-over. “Alright, your wound has healed well. You can be discharged tomorrow. I’ll arrange it then.”

Shi Muhuan breathed a sigh of relief, thinking it might not have been possible.

Seeing that his elder brother was now free, Shi Tingyu went outside to buy him a newspaper to pass the time.

Looking at the fresh Huaxia Daily, Shi Muhuan praised, “You’re still so considerate, sister.”

But when he read a particular article, his expression suddenly turned serious.

Surprised, Shi Tingyu asked, “What’s wrong?”

Shi Muhuan replied, “Did you travel by train from Lianshi Huaixian County Station?”

“Yes.”

Shi Muhuan handed the newspaper to his sister, his face filled with lingering fear. “The train from Huaixian County to Jinling derailed, causing numerous casualties. Luckily, you didn’t take that train.”

Shi Tingyu took the newspaper and saw the black and white photos on it, feeling a wave of relief. She thought of He Ping’s words before leaving and thought to herself that she was fortunate to have strictly adhered to the scheduled departure time.

It seemed she would need to take He Ping’s words more seriously in the future. After all, she was someone who had lived through many hardships; sometimes her casual remarks could change the fate of many people.

He Ping hadn’t anticipated that despite sending letters as reminders, the train still derailed in the end. As a result, several officials from the railway bureau were removed from their positions.

This incident quickly spread in Huaixian County, startling the Lu family. They sighed in relief that Weiguo and his wife hadn’t taken that train, but they felt sorrow for the families of the deceased.

On the nineteenth day of the first lunar month, Shi Muhuan was discharged from the hospital.

Because he still needed to recuperate and his family members were coming to take care of him, Shen Ziming helped him apply to stay in the family quarters during his recovery.

There were some vacant houses in the family quarters, which happened to be quite useful.

Shi Muhuan’s injury was to his leg, so a single-story house with a small courtyard was arranged for him, similar to the family quarters they had in Jinling.

When they arrived at the family quarters, they found that the rooms had already been cleaned and were tidy. Neighbors came over to help upon hearing the commotion.

It was their first time meeting company commander family, and they didn’t expect to encounter such a good-looking young girl.

After observing the tall figure of Lu Weiguo, it was clear that their appearances didn’t quite match, but the atmosphere between them exuded a harmonious vibe that couldn’t be described.

Once everything was settled, Shi Tingyu invited Shen Ziming to stay for dinner.

“Comrade Shen, stay for dinner tonight, and let’s invite the people who helped clean up as well,” she said.

Shen Ziming mentioned that they were two of her brother’s comrades who had come to help clean up.

Shi Muhuan added, “Yes, let’s have a meal together.”

Shen Ziming glanced at Shi Tingyu and nodded obediently.

During their visit, Shi Tingyu and Lu Weiguo had brought plenty of cured meats and sausages, enough to make two dishes. They had also bought a lot of staple foods in preparation.

Shen Ziming went to fetch the others, while Shi Tingyu, Lu Weiguo, and Shi Muhuan kept themselves busy.

Lu Weiguo washed the vegetables, Shi Muhuan sat and chopped them, and Shi Tingyu took charge of cooking like a master chef.

When the guests arrived, they found that the cooking process was unusually smooth, and their attempts to help were futile.

The two visitors had a good relationship with Shi Muhuan, and they were not at all reserved. While they couldn’t assist in the kitchen, they tidied up the courtyard. Though they might not stay long, they planned to reside there during Shi Muhuan’s recovery.

After the meal, Shen Ziming and Shi Muhuan discussed the recent operations to capture spies.

They had already tracked down the individuals and expected to apprehend them within the next few days, reassuring him not to worry.
