When Shen Yu’an and the others returned, Song Shi had already prepared the meal.
Upon entering the house, they immediately enjoyed a warm bowl of egg drop soup.
The table was filled with dishes, marking their first proper meal since arriving here.
Looking at the various dishes on the table that they didn’t have at home, Shen Yu’an asked curiously, “We seem to be lacking these things…?”
Not only was there kimchi on the table, but also some wild vegetables and mushrooms.
Song Shi chuckled and said, “They were all brought by the villagers before dinner.”
Grandma Shen smiled and added, “They came to inquire about hiring workers for our household tomorrow. They probably felt it would be impolite to come empty-handed, so they brought some things.”
“They’re not anything big, but regardless of their reasons for bringing them, we should remember their kindness.”
Shen Yu’an nodded, not pressing further on the matter. With this exchange, their family would naturally integrate into the village more quickly.
Dinner was plentiful. Since the table in the house wasn’t large enough, they brought out a small table for the children to sit at.
The room was lit with oil lamps, not very bright, but the dim light added an extra sense of warmth.
Outside, the cold wind howled, but inside, there was laughter and joy.
This household had six rooms in the courtyard. One was given to Shen Yun and Xiao Zhang Shi, while the remaining five were shared by the rest of them.
Shen Yu’an, Song Xiao Ni, and Hua Ling had a separate room, while Grandma Shen, Song Shi, and Ding Hehua shared another.
The remaining three rooms were left for the men to distribute among themselves.
Have a good night’s sleep~
Early the next morning, a crowd had already gathered in front of the Shen family’s door.
Although they noticed that the door had not yet opened, despite their impatience, they waited outside. Only a few individuals were muttering to themselves, not knowing whether to stay or leave.
A small, skinny man with triangular eyes said, “Seriously, they better not be deceiving us. We were supposed to register today, and now they’re making us wait.”
Someone glanced at the man and scoffed, “Tch, if you don’t want to wait, then why did you come?”
The woman next to the man with triangular eyes couldn’t accept it and started arguing with the other person.
As more people gathered, the voices became noisy, successfully waking everyone in the courtyard.
Hearing the commotion outside, the people inside knew what was happening—they were all here to register.
Everyone got up and quickly freshened up before opening the courtyard gate.
Creak~
The door was pulled open, and dozens of pairs of eyes outside immediately turned towards Shen Yu’an.
The people outside first marveled at Shen Yu’an’s good looks in their hearts before stating their purpose.
A strong man took the lead and said, “Miss Shen, um, we’re here to register for house construction. I have the best physical strength!”
Upon hearing this self-introduction, the others couldn’t help but start chattering about their own strengths.
“I’m also good at building houses. I guarantee that we’ll build a spacious and bright one for you.”
“Miss Shen, I…”
“Choose me, choose me…”
Shen Yu’an listened to the noisy voices and raised her voice, saying, “Everyone, please quiet down. Those who want to register, line up and enter the courtyard for registration.”
The people outside looked behind Shen Yu’an and noticed that a table had been set up in the courtyard with paper and pens on it, seemingly placed there at some point.
Outside, people started queuing up and there was a lot of commotion, as everyone wanted to be at the front.
The eldest son and the others quickly came out to maintain order. By the time the first person entered, fifteen minutes had passed.
There were many people from outside, and they had learned yesterday that there were only about sixty or seventy households in the village. Yet, there were already fifty or sixty people who had arrived.
However, they didn’t mind the large number of people. The more people there were, the faster they could build the houses.
Shen Rong sat behind the table, writing down the names of the people who entered the line, one by one, on a piece of paper.
They didn’t need everyone. As newcomers, they weren’t familiar with the character of each individual, so they openly discussed this matter.
Standing next to Shen Rong, Shen Yu’an said, “Although you have registered now, if any of you engage in dishonest behavior or try to get paid without doing the work, we will naturally dismiss you.”
As soon as Shen Yu’an said this, several people in the queue immediately had unpleasant expressions on their faces.
