With Zhu’s interruption, Zhu Li Zheng didn’t want to bother with her anymore, so he simply let her go on talking to herself.
Some people don’t realize how foolish they are until they suffer losses.
Shen Yu’an watched them discuss without interrupting.
After a few remarks from Li Zheng, Zhu felt a sense of relief in her whole body and mind.
She looked smugly at Shen Yu’an and said, “Alright, one tael it is, just one tael.”
Shen Yu’an reached out and took out the bet that Shen Dalang had prepared earlier while Zhu and Zhu Lizheng were arguing.
Written on yellow paper with black characters were two simple sentences, outlining the contents of the bet between Shen Yu’an and Zhu.
Shen Yu’an extended the paper in front of Zhu and said, “Let’s sign and seal it, so no one can deny it later.”
Hearing that she had to sign and seal the document, Zhu became hesitant again. A faint sense of uncertainty arose in her heart, and she looked at Shen Yu’an, trying to confirm something.
Shen Yu’an didn’t rush her; her face remained calm, revealing nothing.
In the end, Zhu couldn’t resist her greed, and she took the paper, intending to seal the bet.
However, she wasn’t entirely foolish; she knew that besides the Shen family, only Li Zheng could read.
She was afraid that Shen Yu’an might take advantage of her literacy to trick her, so she put on a fake smile and asked Li Zheng if the content written on the paper was the bet.
Li Zheng glanced at the contents on the paper and offered her some advice.
But Zhu, being blinded by her desire for wealth, paid no attention to his warnings. She was afraid that Li Zheng would delay her chance to make money, so she snatched the bet and pressed her handprint on it.
The villagers behind them were eager to try as well and wanted to leave their handprints on the paper.
Their mumbling voices were too much, and Li Zheng, not far from them, could hear every word clearly.
Zhu Li Zheng silently cursed the ignorant women with long hair but short insight and then turned back to glare at them.
Shen Yu’an took the bet that Zhu had already sealed with her handprint and patted it with satisfaction.
She smiled like a squirrel that had stolen a pinecone and said, “Alright, then let Li Zheng continue with the questioning.”
Zhu, with a pair of puzzled eyes, asked, “What more do you need to ask? Aunt Pan already said she went up to help out of goodwill. Just give me the silver directly.”
After waiting for a while and seeing no intention from Shen Yu’an to hand over the silver, she pointed at the bet in Shen Yu’an’s hand and threatened, “This has been sealed with my handprint. If you dare to back out, I’ll… I’ll take you to court!”
Shen Yu’an nodded, “Thank you, Aunt Zhu, for your suggestion. If I lose the bet, I will indeed go to the authorities as you wish.”
She glanced at Zhu Li Zheng.
Li Zheng helplessly continued his questioning of Aunt Pan, “What happened after you helped Little Zhang?”
Aunt Pan’s face was filled with anger as she said, “What else could happen? That little wretch refused to let me help and struggled against me. I just gave her a gentle push backward, who knew she would fall down! It’s her own fault for not standing firm. Serves her right!”
The crowd looked at Aunt Pan with astonishing expressions, and even Zhu was shocked.
After all the commotion, it turned out that Aunt Pan was the one who made the mistake first, and now she was admitting it, trying to shift the blame on others.
They had all seen Xiao Zhang before, and she appeared gentle and spoke politely.
Compared to the other two daughters-in-law in the Shen family, she seemed incredibly kind and gentle.
The Shen sisters-in-law got along well with the other village women, so when they heard Aunt Pan’s words, they naturally sided with the victim, Xiao Zhang.
At the same time, the cries of pain from Xiao Zhang reached the ears of the crowd once again.
Now, their sympathy overflowed, and their gazes toward Aunt Pan were even more condemning.
Shen Yu’an repeated, “So, you are the one who pushed my third sister-in-law down, is that right?”
Aunt Pan couldn’t control what she said; she only knew how to follow her heart and speak her true thoughts.
She snorted and said, “So what if I pushed her? That spoiled brat’s demeanor is really irritating. Only your family of fools would treat a bunch of loss-making goods like treasures.”
The Shen family members glared at Aunt Pan in anger. If it weren’t for Li Zheng’s presence, they might have already moved to tear her apart.
Just then, a midwife rushed out in panic, “The pregnant woman is having difficulties in childbirth! It’s not going well!”
As soon as the words were spoken, Shen Yun’s legs went weak, and he lost control. He ran up to Aunt Pan and gave her two punches in fury.
Aunt Pan had long been terrified, and she tried to control her mouth, but all those thoughts in her heart had already spilled out.
She wished she could slap herself twice, but now it was too late for regrets.
After receiving Shen Yun’s two punches, blood stains immediately appeared at the corners of Aunt Pan’s mouth.
Seeing that it might turn fatal if the fight continued, Zhu Li Zheng hurriedly urged the other Shen family members, “Quick, pull them apart! If someone gets killed, it won’t end well for any of you.”
Shen Rong and Shen Ming then reached out to separate them.
However, Shen Yun stared at Aunt Pan like a ferocious beast, showing no signs of backing down.
The women who had come to watch the commotion sensed the danger and quickly ran back to the village to call for help.
The objective had been achieved; Shen Yu’an had called out the gu worm inside Aunt Pan’s body.
When the small worm tried to crawl onto Shen Yu’an’s clothes to stay, she disgustedly let it crawl back into the room, telling it to come back after she had taken a shower.
With a glance at the shocked Zhu and the slowly recovering Aunt Pan, Shen Yu’an quickly went into Zhang’s room.
As she approached the room, a strong smell of blood hit her nose.
Looking at the bed, Xiao Zhang’s face was covered in sweat, and strands of hair stuck to her face.
Her breath was weak, and the rise and fall of her chest were becoming increasingly slow.
One midwife kept pushing down on Little Zhang’s belly, while the other was looking down.
She said, “Keep it up, don’t fall asleep. I can see the baby’s head now. Just a little more effort, and it will come out.”
Song Shi, holding a prepared vinegar water, placed it under Xiao Zhang’s nose for her to smell.
Grandma Shen was also in a worrisome condition; she was frightened by Xiao Zhang’s situation.
Upon seeing Shen Yu’an coming over, Grandma Shen wanted to chase her away, saying, “Women are giving birth; what is a young child like you doing here? Get out quickly.”
Shen Yu’an stepped forward and supported her, guiding her out. She whispered, “With me here, Grandma, you should go out first.”
As Grandma Shen was old and had been frightened, she was indeed feeling a bit overwhelmed and had no choice but to leave.
After seeing her grandmother out, Shen Yu’an turned back to the bedside.
