“Her father is the Grand Tutor and also the Emperor’s Teacher. She herself is a county princess. However, Gu Jing is modest and never uses her status to dominate others. It’s because of this that the Zhang family sees her as an easy target,” Su Yu said, admiring this woman’s demeanor.
Wang Jinhe’s expression was a bit complicated. “I suddenly don’t know how to interact with her anymore.”
The daughter of the Grand Tutor, a county princess herself, yet she behaved without any airs. Was there really someone like that in this world?
“What’s the problem? If she sincerely treats you well, you can reciprocate with sincerity. Why think so much about it?” Su Yu frowned and said.
Wang Jinhe paused for a moment, then nodded with a smile. “You’re right. Sincerity for sincerity is what matters. Why should I overthink it?”
“Zhang Zhilin is a child highly regarded by Elder Gu. At the age of three, his talent for poetry was exceptionally high. Elder Gu was grooming him as the heir. Two years ago, when something happened to this child, Elder Gu was furious, and even the higher-ups were alarmed,” Su Yu considered for a moment and decided to share everything with Wang Jinhe, just in case she didn’t know anything later.
“Zhilin has exceptional talent?”
“A child prodigy.”
Just two simple words were enough to describe Zhilin’s talent.
“Maybe you shouldn’t continue talking to me like this; I might start feeling inferior,” Wang Jinhe self-deprecatingly remarked.
Observing Wang Jinhe’s reaction, Su Yu asserted confidently, “You won’t.”
Wang Jinhe raised an eyebrow, looking at Su Yu. Why was he so sure?
But that was true; she had just made a casual remark.
Their conversation was overheard by Wang Dagui and the others. They didn’t expect that Zhilin was the Emperor’s Teacher’s grandson. What kind of child had they been raising? They were somewhat worried about taking care of him properly.
Seeing that they were concerned, Wang Jinhe smiled and said, “Grandpa, we don’t need to worry too much about this matter. We should treat Zhilin as we have in the past. If we are overly cautious, Zhilin might feel uncomfortable.”
“Jinhe is right; we should take care of him as usual. He should be able to return in about a month,” Su Yu considered and said.
“That sounds good. I really look forward to their return and seeing the child’s condition. Perhaps they will be happier,” Wang Dagui said.
The child had already improved somewhat, but whether he would fully recover depended on luck.
Su Yu’s arrival had brought a lot of liveliness to the house. Wang Jinhe had originally planned to go mushroom picking in the mountains, but now she couldn’t.
“I’ll go make dinner.” Wang Jinhe glanced at the time, and since it was about time, she left Su Yu alone to chat with Wang Dagui and the others.
Although he was mentally prepared, Su Yu still felt strangely nervous while chatting.
After dinner, Xiao Bao and Xiao Zhi went to their room to practice writing.
“Is the little guy starting to recognize characters?” Su Yu asked in surprise.
“What’s so surprising about that? Before Xiao Zhi had his accident, he was learning on his own at home. During the holidays, he started teaching Xiao Bao, moreover whenever my brother return home, he’ll make sure to also teach the two children. But I think Xiao Bao learns while playing. He recognizes characters, but he also plays a lot,” Wang Jinhe shrugged and said. “I haven’t seen Xiao Bao seriously recognizing characters; he always learns while playing. But he can learn very well. It’s quite envy-inducing.”
“Really? That’s impressive. I’ll try teaching Xiao Bao tomorrow,” Su Yu suddenly became interested.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu skeptically, “Can you do it?”
Su Yu stared at Wang Jinhe in dissatisfaction. “I’m a top scholar, after all. Can’t I handle teaching two little kids?”
She was questioning his capability?
Wang Jinhe coughed lightly, realizing that she might have misspoken.
“I think I misspoke,” Wang Jinhe said somewhat awkwardly.
“If you say something like that again next time, you’ll see how I deal with you,” Su Yu warned.
Wang Jinhe couldn’t be bothered to engage with Su Yu’s deep immersion in his role. They had only just met today, and they seemed to get along, but now he was getting overly dramatic.
“What do you plan to do?” Su Yu asked, tilting his head to look at Wang Jinhe.
“I plan to go to the melon patch and see if there are any ripe watermelons. I’ll pick a couple to bring back,” the watermelons should be ready to eat by now.
“I’ll go with you.”
Wang Jinhe and Su Yu went to the melon patch together. When Su Yu saw the size of the watermelons in the field, she was amazed. “They’re so big?”
These melons were at least twenty pounds each.
Wang Jinhe nodded, “Yes.”
They approached the melons and carefully picked two ripe ones to bring back.
Each of them carried a watermelon back, and when they arrived home, Xiao Bao and Xiao Zhi had finished writing their characters and were playing with the toys Su Yu had brought. Upon seeing Wang Jinhe carrying a large watermelon, Xiaobao excitedly exclaimed, “Big watermelon! Such a big watermelon!”
“Is it ready to eat?” Grandma Wang asked curiously.
“It should be, let me get a knife to cut it,” Wang Jinhe went to the kitchen to grab a knife and began cutting the watermelon. The moment the knife sliced through the melon, it split open.
“The color looks so good. Jinhe, how about selling this melon to me? I’ll give you fifty wén per jīn,” Su Yu said as she watched Wang Jinhe cut the watermelon. “It’s worth at least a hundred wén per jīn.”
Wang Jinhe was shocked by Su Yu’s offer of fifty wén per jīn. “That much?”
Well, it was indeed an excellent watermelon, and selling it for a hundred wén per jīn would be perfectly reasonable.
“Sure,” She agreed. She was satisfied with the price he offered.
Grandma Wang and the others couldn’t help but laugh and cry at their meticulous calculations. “You two are family now. Is it really necessary to haggle over this?”
“Of course, it’s necessary. After all, this is the fruit of Jinhe’s hard work. I can guarantee that these watermelons will sell well in the capital,” Su Yu’s eyes lit up after taking a bite. He had never tasted such a delicious watermelon before.
“The taste of this watermelon is really amazing!” Su Yu exclaimed in delight.
Each of the family members took a piece to taste, and indeed, the flavor was exceptional.
Wang Jinhe gave a piece to both Xiao Bao and Xiao Zhi, saying, “You two are still young, so don’t eat too much, okay?”
“Mom we know. Mom’s watermelons are the most delicious in the world!” Xiao Ze said while munching on his watermelon.
Wang Jinhe chuckled as he looked at Xiao Bao and teased, “Are you trying to flatter me, little charmer?”
Xiao Bao widened his eyes and protested, “No, I’m not.”
“Is that so? Then what is it?” Wang Jinhe ruffled Xiao Bao’s hair and asked.
“Everything Xiao Bao says is true, right? Brother, aren’t Mom’s watermelons the most delicious?” Xiao Bao turned to Zhang Zhilin and asked.
Zhang Zhilin smiled and nodded, “Yes, everything Xiao Bao says is true.”
Everyone couldn’t help but chuckle at Zhang Zhilin’s affection for his little brother. It seemed that he believed everything his younger sibling said.
