Premarital Cohabitation: Chapter 36

Next door, Uncle Sun’s house has set up a landscaped fish pond in the courtyard, with artificial hills and flowing water; it looks quite spectacular. With the hot weather, our two little ones insist on going there every day to wade in the water and have a drink. Today, 007 made a bold move and jumped into the water, completely submerging all the water lilies that were growing there.

Uncle Sun didn’t get upset, but I asked a friend from the flower shop, and it turns out that a pond full of water lilies isn’t cheap at all. Dr. Wei is busy writing his thesis and doesn’t have time to go to the flower market with me. So, I thought it would be better to order some online to compensate Uncle Sun.

Dr. Wei holds all the financial power, so I ordered everything and asked him to pay. Just as we were sitting down to eat, his phone rang. One good habit he has is never bringing his phone to the dining table. There were two new messages on WeChat.

Patient’s Relative (Mr. Xie): Thank you for taking care of my dad during this time. I wonder if you’re free tomorrow night? I’d like to treat you to dinner to show my appreciation. You’ve worked hard during this period.

Patient’s Relative (Mr. Xie): Oh, by the way, how did you like the cake from last time? If you liked it, I can bring you another one.

The chat history goes back over a month, starting with discussions about the patient’s condition and gradually delving into daily life topics, including sports, fitness, and wellness. Dr. Wei’s responses maintain his usual professional tone, neither overly enthusiastic nor cold. He answers all questions about the patient’s medication and psychological adjustments.

I noticed that this scheming guy often messages Dr. Wei during his breaks, and the cake delivery happened two days ago. If I can’t see through this, then I’ve wasted over twenty years.

Patient’s Relative (Mr. Xie): Are you still busy?

I rolled my eyes and called out, “Dr. Wei, someone is looking for you on WeChat.”

“Who is it?”

“A very thick-skinned man.”

Soon, Dr. Wei emerged from his study with a smile at the corners of his eyes, gently patting my face, “Thicker than yours?”

I pushed his hand away, making a sound through my nose, “You even got a cake, matcha flavor, right?”

Dr. Wei checked the chat history and sat down on the sofa, laughing, “It’s chocolate.”

My pupils were practically shaking, “You remember that quite clearly! You usually don’t let me eat sweets, saying they can raise cholesterol, cause arteriosclerosis, and trigger diabetes. Yet you sneakily eat them behind my back!”

Dr. Wei glanced down at his phone and swiped a few times, “I didn’t eat it; our department head took it home for his son.”

“Really? I’m not kidding.”

“So, will you be coming home for dinner tomorrow night? If you have plans, just let me know in advance. I’ll take 007 and Doughnut back to my mom’s for dinner.”

Dr. Wei laughed even more exaggeratedly, “Xiao Qi.”

“What?”

Dr. Wei gently raised my chin, “You’re really cute.”

“Be serious! I’m annoyed right now.” I got up and headed to the kitchen. “Can’t you see that this guy is interested in you? Why do you keep responding so diligently? What can’t be discussed at the hospital? Why did he add you on WeChat? Is this some kind of after-sales service?”

Dr. Wei followed me into the kitchen and rested his chin on my shoulder.

“The difference between private and public hospitals is right here. They pay higher fees for consultations and treatment to get more communication opportunities and time. This patient is a bit older and doesn’t know how to use a phone, so it’s his son who talks to me about his condition.”

“And then they have to arrange dinner? Can’t they communicate at the hospital?”

“Isn’t WeChat convenient? No need to run back and forth,” Dr. Wei handed me his phone. “I’ve already declined the dinner invitation. I’ll definitely come home on time tomorrow night to cook for you. Don’t be mad, okay?”

Honestly, as soon as he got up and looked at me, my anger dissipated. Especially when he used such a soft tone to coax me.

But I probably have a bit of a coquettish streak in me. There’s a saying, how does it go? A perfectly fine person, but once they open their mouth, it’s all about me, right?

“All dressed up and smelling good every day, attracting attention from all around, secretly proud of yourself, huh? So many people like you, but do you know who likes you the most?”

Dr. Wei didn’t get angry but laughed instead, circling around me from behind and said, “Isn’t it a good thing if many people like me? Your husband, me, is good in every way and treats you the best…”

I interrupted, “Stop it.”

Dr. Wei held my hand and swiped on the screen, opening Taobao. “Let me buy you some LEGO. Didn’t you mention wanting a spaceship last time? Look it up yourself.”

I corrected him, “It’s the Millennium Falcon.”

“Alright, the Millennium Falcon,” Dr. Wei paused and added, “Give me a kiss, don’t be mad anymore.”

A piece of advice: Try to keep the kitchen countertop clean and tidy, you never know when you might need it…

3.

I remembered that my dad had taken this photo. At that time, Dr. Wei was half-jumping while proposing to me. It was a dark night, and the picture quality was a bit blurry, but the memory was crystal clear.

I opened the contacts and found that Dr. Wei’s WeChat ID was no longer “Doctor Wei” but “Keeper of Chu Qi.” His personal signature: Married.
