Chapter 8 – The Female Supporting Character in the Confession Book

Second Sister-in-law Wen, Li Meimei, was momentarily stunned, but then she quickly realized and, calculating the time, and she was very pleasantly surprised. “Mom, it’s been a month and a half.”

Zhang Xiuying slapped her thigh. “Second, tomorrow morning, you take Meimei to the town to have the doctor feel her pulse. Meimei, from now on, you stay at home, do the housework, and I’ll handle the fieldwork.”

Second Sister-in-law Wen touched her belly and obediently as she nodded. She glanced at her husband and noticed he was grinning foolishly.

The family was about to welcome its third generation, and Wen Yuejun was also very happy.

Eldest Sister-in-law Wen and her husband were also happy, but Eldest Sister-in-law Wen had a bit of a heavy heart.

Considering the timeline, she had entered the family six months earlier than the second. Now, the second had conceived while she still had no news.

In the past, when neither of them had gotten pregnant, Sister-in-law Wen hadn’t felt much. But now that the second was pregnant, Sister-in-law Wen was worried her mother-in-law might look down on her.

As she was thinking, a spoonful of tofu was added to her bowl. She looked up and saw Zhang Xiuying smiling at her. “Eat quickly. This thing about children can’t be rushed; it comes with fate. When the time is right, it will happen.”

The heavy stone in Eldest Sister-in-law Wen’s heart was lifted. She glanced at the second’s bowl and saw the same spoonful of tofu. Seeing her look over, Second Sister-in-law Wen smiled and said: “Sister-in-law, don’t worry.”

Eldest Sister-in-law Wen’s eyes became a bit misty. Every time she visited her parents’ home, her mother would always tell her that she must have accumulated great virtue in her past life to have married into such a harmonious family.

Eldest Sister-in-law Wen believed that she must have been a very good person in her past life.

Wen Yuejun looked at his wife, who was so fair and impartial, and once again felt grateful that he had married the right woman when he was young. The saying “A virtuous wife brings prosperity for three generations” was certainly not just a random saying.

Looking around, was there any family in Hongshu Village as harmonious as his?

——

While the Wen family was joyful, the Luo family was arguing.

Unlike the Wen family, the Luo family had a more complex household. Big Brother Luo and Little Brother Luo each had two children, with the oldest already over nine years old, an age full of mischief.

Before Luo Manzhen got divorced, the children of the Luo family were very fond of their aunt because she always brought them delicious treats whenever she came back.

But now that Luo Manzhen had divorced, and Sun Haowen had been sent to prison due to a letter of accusation from the reborn Luo Manzhen, she no longer had a source of income.

The money she had saved up was all spent, and she couldn’t provide any treats anymore. The children, influenced by their parents, had begun to lose respect for their aunt.

Tonight, after Luo Manzhen returned from the Lin family, there was no food left for her at home. The Lin family had only given her lunch, considering she had done housework for them the whole day. Who would have food to spare for her in the evening?

Luo Manzhen had always been slender, and during this period after her rebirth, she hadn’t had enough to eat except for the first few days. She had become even thinner, and her once slightly rounded chin had become sharp.

When she saw that her family hadn’t left her any food, Luo Manzhen exploded. “Mom, Dad, how can you be so unreasonable? I’m your daughter, and you won’t even leave me a sweet potato?”

Mother Luo glanced at her daughter, then at her husband, son, and daughter-in-law, without saying a word. Luo sister-in-law spoke up: “Eldest sister, what you’re saying isn’t right. You’ve already married off, and you chose to get divorced. If you had stayed at home quietly for a while after the divorce, waiting a bit and finding someone else to marry, the family would never have lacked food for you. But you refuse to help with the housework. Instead, you go around doing work for other people. Why should we feed you?”

“Shut up!” Luo Manzhen glared frostily at Luo Laotou. “Dad, are you really so heartless?”

Luo Laotou tapped the edge of the kang with his smoking pipe. “Your sister-in-law is right. The family has a heavy burden. If you won’t work, there’s no food for you.”

Luo Manzhen looked around the room, from Luo Laotou to the youngest niece in the family, each of them wearing the same cold and indifferent expression. Luo Manzhen sneered twice. “Fine, I get it. Don’t come crying later!”

With that, Luo Manzhen slammed the door and left. She went to her small room, which, of course, wasn’t the same room she used to live in before marriage. It was a small, dilapidated room converted from a storage space. Luo Manzhen sat on the wooden plank bed, thinking back to the warm and caring way the Wen family treated Wen Xin. Her expression slowly twisted.

——

The next day, Wen Xin, rarely, slept in.

When she woke up, everyone except for Second Sister-in-law Wen had already gone out to work in the fields. Second Sister-in-law Wen was sitting under the eaves in the main room, sewing.

Wen Xin carried a basin to wash up and asked: “Second sister-in-law, did you all come back from the village?”

Second Sister-in-law Wen smiled and said: “We’ve been to the doctor. He said it’s been over a month since I got pregnant.”

Wen Xin wiped her face with a towel. “Congratulations, congratulations. Have you had breakfast, second sister-in-law?”

As a pregnant woman, Second Sister-in-law Wen was treated specially. Her breakfast included an extra boiled egg.

Many women during their confinement didn’t even get boiled eggs, but she, having just gotten pregnant, was told by her mother-in-law to eat one every day. Second Sister-in-law Wen had never felt so fortunate.

“I’ve had it. The kitchen pot still has soup simmering. Mom put two radishes in it when she left, saying you like them. The rice is also kept warm in the pot. You should go eat.”

Wen Xin poured the water out in the yard and quickly went to the kitchen. She ate a bowl of cornmeal porridge soaked in bone broth.

The radishes were stewed until soft and slightly sweet, and Wen Xin ate one by herself.

After finishing her meal, Wen Xin, with a basket in hand, went with Second Sister-in-law Wen to gather wild vegetables.

They went to a place a bit farther from the village, where there was a forest. The name of their village, Hongshu Village, came from this forest.

The forest wasn’t large, and halfway up the mountain was a patch of barren land. Because the soil was poor, it hadn’t been cultivated, making it the perfect place for wild vegetables.

By the time Wen Xin and Second Sister-in-law Wen arrived, several people were already there gathering. Most of them were children, and a few were pregnant women, like Second Sister-in-law Wen.

They gathered together and started chatting about parenting tips. After talking about their children, the group moved on to discussing recent happenings in the village and surrounding areas—who’s eldest daughter had gotten engaged, who’s young wife had fought with her husband, and who’s mother-in-law had scolded her daughter-in-law.

There were even rumors about who had gone into the small forest together.

The conversation was filled with the essence of everyday life, and Wen Xin listened intently.

However, gossip tends to go in circles, and when the group started a third round of discussing a particular topic, Wen Xin began to feel bored.

She slowly distanced herself from the group and found a quiet spot to squat down and continue digging.

As she worked, she suddenly heard the sound of uniform footsteps. Looking up, she saw a group of soldiers dressed in military green uniforms running in unison from the foot of the mountain.

It was the first time Wen Xin had seen military training in this era, and she couldn’t help but watch carefully. Perhaps she was so absorbed in watching that the person running at the very back noticed her. Wen Xin caught sight of him as well.

For a moment, she froze.

It was the man she had seen at the restaurant, the one referred to as Old Gu. Wen Xin remembered his hands—beautiful beyond words. He was tall, at least 1.85 meters, with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long legs, standing out like a crane among a flock of chickens in the group of soldiers.

Old Gu was running slower than the others, and his eyes were fixed directly on Wen Xin, as if sparks were flying in his gaze.

Suddenly, he smiled at her, his almond-shaped eyes curving into crescent moons. While continuing to run, he saluted her.
