Chapter 11: Six Sister-in-laws
Hearing Li Laidi’s words, Su Ruanruan was stunned for a moment, but she quickly smiled again.
“Second Sister-in-law wants to wear new clothes?”
Li Laidi nodded repeatedly. “Seventh’s Wife, what kind of question is that? Who wouldn’t want to wear new clothes? I don’t even know how many years it’s been since I last wore something new! Of course, I want to!”
Su Ruanruan beamed. “If Second Sister-in-law wants new clothes, why come to me? You should go to Second Brother! Honestly, Second Brother is too much—after all these years, he hasn’t even gave one new dress for you.”
Li Laidi wiped the corners of her eyes, looking aggrieved. “Isn’t that the truth? Ever since I married into this family, I’ve worked tirelessly, caring for the elders and looking after the young ones. And in the end, I don’t even get a single new piece of clothing. My heart aches!”
“Has Second Sister-in-law really had such a miserable life?”
“Of course! Would I lie to you?”
“Then Second Sister-in-law must not be able to endure this hardship any longer, right?”
“Exactly!”
“So Second Sister-in-law is planning to get a divorce?” Su Ruanruan gasped. “Second Sister-in-law is truly a modern woman! But women can hold up half the sky. Even if you get divorced, there’s nothing to fear. Second Sister-in-law will surely live a better life than now! Who knows, maybe Second Sister-in-law will find someone even better—someone who’s willing to buy fabric and make new clothes for you!”
Su Ruanruan’s rapid-fire words left Li Laidi completely dumbfounded.
It took a long moment before Li Laidi finally reacted. “What nonsense are you talking about? When did I say I wanted a divorce?”
Su Ruanruan looked at Li Laidi innocently. “Didn’t Second Sister-in-law just say she couldn’t endure this life anymore? If not a divorce, then what?”
“I meant that if you give me a few yards of fabric so I can make a new dress, my life won’t feel so bitter.”
“But why should I give Second Sister-in-law fabric?”
Su Ruanruan looked at Li Laidi as if she found the idea utterly baffling. “Second Sister-in-law is Second Brother’s wife, not mine. If Second Sister-in-law wants new clothes, you should ask Second Brother!”
Li Laidi glared at Su Ruanruan. “If your Second Brother had any, would I have come to you?”
“If just because I have fabric, Second Sister-in-law comes to ask me, then the department store in Xiancheng has even more fabric. Why not go there and ask?”
Li Laidi curled her lips. “Even if I go ask, they won’t give it to me! Seventh’s Wife, I’m just asking for a bit of fabric. We’re all family—why are you being so petty? Before you married in, Mother said you were hardworking and quiet, but now you don’t seem like that at all. Could it be that Mother was deceived?”
“Second Sister-in-law has been married for so many years—you must have quite a bit of private savings, right? I just got married and don’t have a single coin of my own. How about Second Sister-in-law splitting half of yours with me?”
Li Laidi instinctively covered her pocket, turned sideways, and shouted: “Why should I give you my money?”
“Didn’t Second Sister-in-law just say that we’re all family? Then why be so petty? You’re unwilling to share half of your savings with me, yet you came asking for my fabric. You want all the benefits for yourself while letting others take the losses. It’s broad daylight, and Second Sister-in-law is already dreaming?”
After saying this, Su Ruanruan flashed a bright smile at Li Laidi. “If Second Sister-in-law truly wants new clothes, it’s best to ask Second Brother—after all, that’s how it should be. If you’re too embarrassed to ask, I can ask for you.”
“Who needs you to speak for me?!”
Li Laidi snorted, turned around, and was about to leave. When she reached the doorway, she suddenly stopped and sneered: “So much fabric—can one person even wear it all? What are you saving it for, a burial shroud? Pah!”
Hearing this, Su Ruanruan wasn’t angered at all. She smiled sweetly and replied: “Second Sister-in-law, you’re mistaken. This fabric isn’t good enough for a burial shroud. When the time comes for me to prepare one, I’ll definitely buy the finest material. I’ll be sure to let Second Sister-in-law take a look then.”
Most people avoided mentioning death, let alone discussing burial shrouds.
Su Ruanruan’s unexpected response completely caught Li Laidi off guard. She had no idea how to continue the conversation and could only storm off in frustration.
Watching Li Laidi’s figure disappear past the bedroom door, the smile on Su Ruanruan’s face gradually faded.
Everyone in the same production team lived together, worked together, and knew each other well.
Fu Chunshan was the brigade leader, which meant that the Fu Family naturally received a lot of attention.
Before the original owner had even started discussing marriage with the Fu Family, she had already learned a fair amount about them.
One reason the original owner had been scared to death was because she had believed the rumors about Fu Wenjing. Another reason was her fear of the six sister-in-laws of the Fu Family.
The wife of Eldest Son Fu, Liu Xiue, was aggressive, sharp-tongued, and completely unrestrained. She dared to speak, act, and even make a scene whenever she wanted. On top of that, she was prone to jealousy.
Second Brother Fu’s wife, Li Laidi, favored sons over daughters, was extremely talkative, and loved taking advantage of others. She once got into a fight with a young wife in the brigade over a single green onion and even yanked out a handful of the woman’s hair.
Just now, although Su Ruanruan had refused to back down verbally, she had remained on guard, wary that Li Laidi might suddenly resort to violence.
Perhaps because they were in the Fu Family’s home, or maybe because she knew she was in the wrong, Li Laidi didn’t make a move. This allowed Su Ruanruan to breathe a sigh of relief.
She wasn’t afraid of fighting Li Laidi, but she also didn’t want to end up in a brawl on the second day of her marriage.
Third Brother Fu’s wife, Chen Chunlan, was the women’s director of the production team.
This era promoted the idea that women could hold up half the sky, and Chen Chunlan truly embodied that concept. She involved herself in all the village’s domestic disputes and the trivial matters between women. She was sharp, capable, and efficient.
Fourth Brother Fu had been in poor health and had suffered from a kidney disease. He had passed away two years ago, leaving behind his wife, Liu Feng, and three children.
Among the six sister-in-laws, Liu Feng was the most beautiful. She was tall, had a well-proportioned figure, and her long, glossy black hair was always braided, swaying behind her as she moved.
Since ancient times, widows had often been the subject of gossip. If the Fu Family hadn’t remained unseparated and if Fu Chunshan weren’t the brigade leader, Liu Feng, as a widow raising three children alone, would not have been living as comfortably as she was now.
Unlike the other three sister-in-laws, Liu Feng wasn’t particularly shrewd or capable, nor was she strong-willed. She always did things at a slow pace and spoke gently. She seemed like the easiest one to get along with.
Fifth Brother Fu’s wife was named Li Lanying.
In an era where most people were thin, Li Lanying was notably plump. Though she was under 1.6 meters tall, she weighed over 150 pounds. She had no particular hobbies—her greatest pleasures in life were eating and drinking.
Whenever there was good food or drinks, she was always the first to rush over.
Sixth Brother Fu’s wife, Zhang Chunxia, had an exceptionally sharp tongue and always greeted people with a bright smile before they could even speak. She had excellent social skills and was well-liked in the production team. She knew every bit of gossip, both big and small, better than anyone else.
After running through all of this in her mind, Su Ruanruan couldn’t help but shake her head.
With six sister-in-laws like this looming over her, it was no wonder the original owner had been so terrified.
