Chapter 41: Able to Eat Both Eggs and White Flour
The other three people in the carriage looked slightly uncomfortable at the situation. They chose not to say anything further and returned to their own seats.
With four additional people around, Su Ruanruan and Fu Wenjing found it inconvenient to talk freely. Most of the time, they remained silent, either gazing at the passing scenery outside or exchanging occasional smiles.
The gentle swaying of the train made it easy to feel drowsy. Su Ruanruan dozed off for a while, and when she woke up, it was already lunchtime.
Wang Maoni had brought them some boiled eggs, soft white flour pancakes, and various pickled vegetables and condiments stored in jars.
Fu Wenjing took out four pancakes and grabbed the kettle. “I’ll go heat these up and get a fresh pot of hot water. Once I’m back, we’ll eat. Just wait for me.”
Su Ruanruan smiled and nodded. “Alright.”
As Fu Wenjing left with the food, the other two men and the older woman in the carriage also got down from their bunks, each carrying a meal container as they headed outside.
Only the young woman remained lying in her bunk. It was unclear whether she was asleep or simply not hungry.
Su Ruanruan didn’t pay her much attention and quietly waited for Fu Wenjing to return.
However, before he came back, the young woman’s voice broke the silence. “A grown adult needing someone else to heat their food—what a joke. Perfectly capable, yet shamelessly enjoying someone else’s service. Thick-skinned, aren’t you?”
Hearing this, Su Ruanruan raised an eyebrow and retorted without hesitation: “A husband and wife are one. My man is no different from me. This isn’t ‘someone else’ doing me a favor.”
The young woman fell silent for a long moment before letting out a cold scoff and saying nothing more.
Before long, Fu Wenjing returned with the warmed-up pancakes and hot water.
The heated white flour pancakes were now golden and crisp on the outside, releasing a rich, wheaty aroma.
Su Ruanruan peeked over and noticed that each pancake had a slit cut into it, making it easy to spread condiments inside.
She carefully spread a layer of savory soybean paste onto each pancake, then added some pickled vegetables. Finally, she placed a peeled boiled egg inside and pressed the pancake gently around it.
It reminded her of the baked sesame buns with eggs she used to eat, carrying a similar delightful taste.
When Su Ruanruan was in middle and high school, her favorite breakfast was sesame buns stuffed with all kinds of fillings.
Later, after going to college and starting work, she ate them less frequently.
Now, in a different time and era, she was eating them again.
She took a bite—the pancake was crispy and golden, carrying a strong wheat aroma. The soybean paste inside was savory and salty, the pickled vegetables were crunchy and refreshing, and the boiled egg added another layer of texture. The combination created a rich and satisfying mouthfeel.
Even though she was only drinking hot water alongside it, Su Ruanruan still felt completely content.
The longer she lived in this era, the more she learned to appreciate and cherish what she had.
As she enjoyed her meal, she couldn’t ignore the gazes from the other people in the carriage.
In this time period, both eggs and white flour were luxuries that people envied.
Being able to eat both at the same time was enough to draw twice the amount of admiration.
The eyes of the others burned with a hint of longing, but Su Ruanruan remained unfazed and continued eating at her usual pace.
After lunch, the temperature inside the carriage became warmer than in the morning. With a full stomach, drowsiness crept in even more easily.
Su Ruanruan felt her eyelids growing heavy. She glanced at Fu Wenjing, only to see him still sitting upright, his posture rigid and his expression alert, showing no signs of fatigue.
How was he not sleepy at all?
Just as she was wondering, Fu Wenjing’s expression softened, his eyes filled with warmth. “If you want to sleep, just sleep. I’m here, so you don’t have to worry.”
“You’re not tired?”
“I’m not.” Fu Wenjing replied with a smile. “Do I look tired to you?”
Su Ruanruan shook her head. “No, you don’t.”
Fu Wenjing’s smile grew even gentler. “Sleep well. We’ll be arriving in the middle of the night, so we probably won’t get much rest then.”
Hearing this, Su Ruanruan didn’t try to force herself to stay awake.
Fu Wenjing had been a soldier for many years—his endurance was far beyond hers.
Perhaps it was the steady rocking of the train, making it easier to sleep, but Su Ruanruan ended up sleeping for a long time. By the time she woke up, the sun was already setting.
She got up, went to the restroom, washed her face, and finally felt fully awake.
Not long after she returned to the carriage, Fu Wenjing went to get their dinner.
There were still some pancakes and boiled eggs left, so he only fetched a meal container filled with porridge and, while he was at it, washed two fresh cucumbers they had brought with them.
Being able to eat such crisp and juicy cucumbers on the train was truly something to be envied.
While they were eating, Su Ruanruan once again heard the young woman let out a soft scoff.
However, the woman didn’t say anything this time, and Su Ruanruan simply pretended not to hear.
In truth, she found it rather strange.
They were complete strangers, meeting for the first time on a train, merely passing by each other’s lives. Why did this woman seem to have an issue with her?
Could it be because of Fu Wenjing?
Su Ruanruan had to admit that Fu Wenjing was indeed an outstanding man, but was that enough for someone she had just met to show such hostility toward her?
Since she couldn’t figure it out, she decided not to dwell on it.
After all, they were just passing travelers. Once they got off the train, there was a good chance they would never see each other again in this lifetime. There was no need to take it to heart.
Not long after dinner, the sun completely set, and darkness gradually enveloped the train car.
There was only a single dim light in the carriage, barely illuminating the space, making it difficult to see anything clearly.
With nothing to look at outside and nothing to do inside, Su Ruanruan leaned against her luggage, and before long, she drifted off to sleep again.
When she woke up, the train had come to a stop.
What had once been a relatively quiet train car was now bustling with noise. People were hauling their luggage, calling out to their families, and squeezing their way toward the exit. The narrow aisle was already packed with passengers eager to disembark.
Su Ruanruan rubbed her eyes, sat up straight, and looked across at Fu Wenjing. “The train has arrived, why didn’t you wake me up?”
“There are too many people right now.” Fu Wenjing replied. “I thought it’d be better to wait until the crowd thinned out, and I wanted you to get some more rest.”
Hearing how thoughtful he was, Su Ruanruan couldn’t help but feel happy.
She glanced up at the bunks and saw that they were all empty—everyone else had already left.
“Did you pack everything?” she asked.
“Yes, everything’s ready. I’ve already taken it all down and placed it on the bed. Nothing is missing, don’t worry.”
Su Ruanruan nodded repeatedly. “Of course, I trust you. It’s just… we have so much stuff. How are the two of us going to carry it all?”
When they boarded the train, Eldest Son Fu and Second Fu had helped them load everything.
Now, with just the two of them, getting everything off the train seemed like an impossible task.
Fu Wenjing was strong, but he wasn’t superhuman.
Just as Su Ruanruan was worrying, Fu Wenjing reassured her with a smile. “Someone is here to pick us up. You don’t have to worry about the luggage.”
