Chapter 27: Flashy Regiment Commander Gu

“What? What do you mean, who am I? Aren’t I Jiang Yue?”

Jiang Yue wasn’t sure if Gu Ye had suddenly asked that because he had discovered something. Although she was panicking on the inside, there wasn’t a single flaw on her face.

“Gu Ye, you don’t recognize me?” Jiang Yue even put on a surprised expression, raising her paw and waving it in front of Gu Ye’s eyes.

Gu Ye narrowed his eyes, his sharp gaze locked onto Jiang Yue’s face. That look made her hair stand on end, as if the surrounding air had begun to freeze.

Jiang Yue had experienced Gu Ye’s sharp intuition before. She guessed it must have been her behavior over the past few days that differed too much from before, triggering his suspicion.

This was something unavoidable—it was a problem she would have to face sooner or later.

Still, Jiang Yue felt that Gu Ye was only suspicious. He couldn’t possibly imagine that the soul in this body had already changed.

Sure enough, after staring at Jiang Yue for a while, Gu Ye ended the topic.

“Go home.” he said calmly.

Jiang Yue turned her back to him, quietly letting out a breath of relief.

But she understood clearly—just because Gu Ye didn’t ask now didn’t mean he had dismissed his suspicions. This man was as sharp as a leopard, not easily fooled. She needed to seriously think of a good explanation for her sudden change in personality.

Once they entered the house, Jiang Yue immediately got to work.

“Gu Ye, bring the washbasin and kettle to my room! I’m going to give Ningning a bath and wash her hair.”

Gu Ye: “……”

Jiang Yue was getting more and more skilled at ordering him around.

Still, Gu Ye did as she said.

Jiang Yue tested the water temperature, then placed Ningning into the washbasin and began cleaning her hair.

Ningning’s hair was a tangled mess, not only caked with mud but, upon further inspection, also filled with burdock burrs. Those things had a jagged surface and stuck tightly to hair. If pulled forcefully, they would tear the hair right out. The only option was to cut the clumped strands with scissors.

Jiang Yue was furious. That whole Li Hongying family was truly disgusting.

“Gu Ye, what are you planning to do? I mean, we can’t let Ningning go back to Li Hongying’s house anymore. Have you decided who’s going to take care of Ningning?” Jiang Yue asked while bathing Ningning, who had fallen asleep in the washbasin.

“No.” Gu Ye stood at the doorway, looking down at Jiang Yue as she gently laid a towel over Ningning’s belly, then reached out to test the water temperature again.

“Gu Ye, I know you still don’t believe me, but I’ve truly changed from who I was before!” Jiang Yue looked up into Gu Ye’s eyes and said seriously: “If you can’t find anyone suitable to take care of Ningning for now, why not let me try? What do you think?”

Jiang Yue offered to take care of Ningning not just to gain Gu Ye’s favor, but also because she had been deeply moved when she saw how scared Ningning was today while being bullied by Er Niu at Li Hongying’s house.

Gu Ye didn’t respond, remaining silent.

Jiang Yue sighed. She knew it wouldn’t be easy to earn Gu Ye’s trust.

After a while, Gu Ye’s indifferent voice came: “I’ll consider it.”

He would consider it—that meant there was a chance? Jiang Yue’s mood instantly lifted again.

After Ningning’s bath, Jiang Yue told Gu Ye to dry her hair while she hurried off to prepare vegetables.

By the time lunch was ready, Ningning’s hair had dried too.

Steamed perch, cold shredded lettuce, and stir-fried tomato with eggs. When Jiang Yue brought the dishes out, Gu Ye narrowed his eyes slightly.

After lunch, Gu Ye had to return to the regiment, and he took Ningning with him. Jiang Yue knew that thawing the ice between her and Gu Ye wouldn’t happen overnight—it would take time.

After a lovely afternoon nap, Jiang Yue sat down at her desk, took out paper and pen, and began listing out the things she wanted and needed to do next.

The afternoon passed quickly, and soon it was evening.

Jiang Yue hadn’t stepped outside all afternoon, so she had no idea that the Family Residential Compound had been in an uproar, and that things in Li Hongying’s household had turned into complete chaos.

As the sun set, Gu Ye returned. He walked in and grabbed a cup, drinking water in big gulps. Jiang Yue looked past him, glancing toward the doorway, but didn’t see Ningning.

“Where’s Ningning?”

Gu Ye set down the cup. “I sent her to stay at Aunt Lin’s for a few days.”

Aunt Lin? Jiang Yue searched her memory—yes, she remembered. She was a doctor at the Military Unit hospital.

Jiang Yue stole a glance at Gu Ye, feeling secretly pleased. Ningning wasn’t home—should she have a candlelight dinner with Gu Ye?

“I’m not eating at home tonight. Eat on your own, no need to wait for me.” Gu Ye said, grabbing his hat and walking out the door.

Jiang Yue stared at his tall figure as he left, pouting a little.

Fine. She could have a candlelight dinner by herself.

When Gu Ye returned, it was already nine o’clock at night. Jiang Yue heard sounds coming from the courtyard, so she walked over to the window and looked outside.

It was Gu Ye. He was standing by the well, shirtless, scooping water to shower.

The man had broad shoulders and a wide back, with well-defined muscles. His biceps bulged, and under the moonlight, water droplets trickled down his body along the lines of his muscles—

Before Jiang Yue could even feast her eyes on his waist, she was startled by Gu Ye’s cold bark.

“Have you seen enough?”

Jiang Yue jumped in fright. Before shutting the window, she quickly snuck a glance at Gu Ye’s waist—wow! So slim! So tight! And he had v-lines!

But seriously, who takes a bath wearing long pants? She didn’t even get to see the best part—major deduction in points!

As Jiang Yue grumbled internally, the sound of water outside stopped. Footsteps followed. Gu Ye had finished bathing and gone back to his room.

Ah, in this poor era, there really wasn’t any form of entertainment. After finishing her Chinese textbook, Jiang Yue picked up her English book to study.

Only, she had stared at the same page for a long time without flipping it, clearly distracted. In her mind’s eye kept flashing the image of Gu Ye’s bare back under the moonlight.

Suddenly, Jiang Yue felt something tickling the top of her foot. She shook it, but it didn’t go away. Reaching down, she touched something moving. Instantly, her scalp went numb. She stiffly turned her head to look and then, in the next second, flung her hand wildly while letting out a blood-curdling scream.

“Ahhhhhh!”

Gu Ye had just finished drying himself when a slender figure suddenly burst through his door and threw herself at him.

“Cockroach! Gu Ye, there’s a cockroach!” Jiang Yue was on the verge of tears. The things she feared most in life were mice and cockroaches—and just now, she had touched one with her bare hand!

Ugh, she could never use that hand again!

“Get down first and then talk!” Gu Ye said in a low voice as he reached up to pry Jiang Yue’s arms from around his neck.

“No! I’m not getting down!” Jiang Yue refused and clung to Gu Ye even tighter.

Gu Ye was holding back a strange heat rising in his body, doing his best to keep his voice calm.

“If you don’t get down, how am I supposed to go kill the cockroach?”

Jiang Yue realized he had a point and finally loosened her grip. It was then that she became aware her legs were wrapped around Gu Ye’s waist. She suddenly felt a little embarrassed.

Huh? Was something poking her butt?

Almost immediately, Gu Ye peeled Jiang Yue off him, practically ripped her away. Before she could even react, everything spun around her, and Gu Ye had already pulled on a pair of pants.

So fast!

Gu Ye’s face was dark as a storm. He grabbed a shirt and began buttoning it while striding toward the door, clearly not wanting to lay eyes on Jiang Yue for even a second longer.

But what Jiang Yue was thinking instead was—

Wow, you’d never guess it. Gu Ye always wore that strict green military uniform, buttoned up to the top, upright and proper. Who would’ve thought that Regiment Commander Gu was secretly so flashy in private?

That tight little pair of underwear… that’s the kind of stuff only sold at the foreign goods shop!
