Qi Wang didn’t know how long he had been sitting on the floor. On the rainy night in Jiangyang County, even the floor was damp, covered with droplets, and cold air seeped up from underneath, piercing his limbs and bones.
His coat was wrinkled, his hair was messy from a long journey, two buttons on the collar were loose, his long eyelashes drooped, his skin was pale, and his lips had lost their color, making him look somewhat haggard.
It had been many years since he had been in such a desolate state.
After spending the first twenty years of his life in the wilderness, he had received the best education and resources, and had been carefully nurtured.
Even though he would rather continue to be the obscure Qi Wang who silently made coffee in Morning Ten, in the eyes of others, he was already a famous figure.
But now, he was hiding in this small room of the inn in Jiangyang County, staring at the open wardrobe opposite him. He looked destitute, like a homeless person, more helpless than when he left at the age of twenty with a backpack and boarded a bus.
Qi Wang tightly clenched the three letters, so tightly that the fragile paper was even slightly torn due to the pressure, and he had to let go.
He dared not imagine what mood Yu Nian was in when he wrote these letters in this bedroom.
The earliest one was from 2016, when Yu Nian was probably only twenty years old.
In this cold Room 307, Yu Nian was still full of expectations, with innocence on his face, earnestly scribbling on the letter paper, hesitating and soft-hearted, thinking he had been betrayed, but still choosing to write forgiving words.
Qi Wang stared at the blurred handwriting on the paper, feeling like he was being taken back to the winter eight years ago in an instant.
He broke up with Yu Nian over the phone, calmly weaving lies, saying he had received a set of houses and three million from Yu Xinli.
What did Yu Nian say to him back then?
Yu Nian said, “…I have money too, really, I’m very rich, I can give you everything you want… Don’t lie to me like this.”
Yu Nian begged him not to break up, begged him to take him away, even if they eloped, they could go anywhere together.
Qi Wang leaned his arm on his bent knee, his forehead gently resting on his arm.
The eighteen-year-old Yu Nian’s voice trembled, choking as if trying hard to cover his mouth.
He cried like a little cat about to be abandoned, but also afraid of being more annoying, so he could only plead pitifully.
Qi Wang’s temples ached, every joint in his body felt like it was being hammered heavily.
How could he bear to see Yu Nian cry like this?
How could he bear to leave Yu Nian for so many years, almost letting him disappear into the cold river?
How dare he think that Yu Nian wouldn’t forgive him because of that house and cash, because of his betrayal and breakup.
Eight years ago, Yu Nian forgave him over the phone. Yu Nian said it didn’t matter.
Over the years, his most fatal mistake was obviously underestimating Yu Nian’s love.
He didn’t believe that after so many years, Yu Nian would still love him.
He thought he would disappear from Yu Nian’s life like sand blown away by the wind.
So he just watched Yu Nian from afar.
Yu Nian was right, when he left back then, he never thought of turning back.
He knew exactly where Yu Nian was.
He knew Yu Nian had started his own clothing brand and settled in City A.
He saw that Yu Nian was often accompanied by someone.
He survived on this comfort, even though jealousy burned in his heart, he could still pretend to live a normal life, because he thought Yu Nian was well taken care of where he couldn’t reach.
But on the other hand, Yu Nian knew nothing about him, didn’t even know if he was alive or dead.
He thought he had betrayed Yu Nian despicably and miserably, and Yu Nian would leave him.
But Yu Nian didn’t.
He thought Yu Nian had met people far better than him in the vast world, and would leave him.
But Yu Nian didn’t.
He had been pushing Yu Nian away, whether it was the night Yu Nian confessed to him, or the winter day they broke up.
He finally understood the look in Yu Nian’s eyes on New Year’s Eve.
Yu Nian mocked him, saying, “You’re really generous, always ready to step down.”
What was Yu Nian thinking at that moment?
How disappointed Yu Nian must have been at that moment.
Because until that day, he still didn’t firmly hold Yu Nian’s hand.
Qi Wang slowly got up from the floor, having sat for too long, his joints were stiff, which made him stumble.
He picked up his car keys.
He wanted to rush back to City A, to Yu Nian’s side. He didn’t care if it was too rash at the moment, if the night was too deep, or if the highway conditions were good.
There was still time. Before dawn, he wanted to reach his lover’s side.
So many years.
So many years, he had always owed Yu Nian the words “I love you” and “I will never leave you again.”
Qi Wang staggered out of the room, the lights in the corridor were still dim, the wallpaper on the stairs was peeling, with two or three patches of mildew, and as he walked down, the wooden stairs creaked, particularly harsh in this silent night.
But when he reached the position near the first floor and turned the corner of the stairs, his gaze could already see the floor of the first floor, but he suddenly stopped his steps.
The landlady who was supposed to be behind the counter was nowhere to be seen, the entire floor was empty, and a deformed pillow lay on the rattan chair.
The wind outside the window was strong, raindrops tapping against the window. On such a lonely and desolate night, the time had already pointed to past two o’clock, and there shouldn’t have been any more visitors.
However, the handle of the inn’s door was gently twisted open, and the bell on the door rang loudly.
The door opened, and the cold wind and bitter rain outside rushed in along with the open door.
A tall, slender figure in a black coat walked in, black semi-long hair, a slender and fair neck, wearing a gray turtleneck sweater.
The warm light from the door lamp enveloped him softly, probably because he had been rushing over, his cashmere coat was damp, and there were a few transparent water droplets hanging on his cheeks, gently moving, flowing down his jaw.
He heard movement upstairs and raised his eyes. These pair of eyes, like black moonstones washed by deep blue sea water, black as ink, yet hiding a brilliant and soft light.
He met Qi Wang’s gaze.
Qi Wang stopped his steps.
The two stood there without speaking for a long time, just silently gazing at each other.
The clock in the room ticked away, and the hour and minute hands finally overlapped, emitting a faint sound.
In this belated, stormy night, in the desolate and remote Jiangyang County.
Yu Nian entered, finally seeing the person he had been waiting for for eight years.
Like a long-awaited reunion that had been planned for a long time

When people think they know what is best for you…
Having read this chapter, I really want to beat Qi Wang up but I can also relate to his circumstances. I am not sure if it is fair to say, money can buy confidence while having to struggle through one setback after another can wear you down…
tsk. yi nian was always the braver and stronger of the two. also, way better than his two older siblings could ever be. he was always truthful and so much more than those liars.
ps. if y’all cant tell lol i really hate when people lie to you and make decisions on your behalf without asking you first. xd
