Chapter 4: I Won’t Feel Sorry for Him
Lu Zhao stood behind Su Yunqi. If he dodged, the broom would inevitably hit her, so he had no choice but to endure the blow. “Mother, why are you hitting me! Do you really think since I’m tough and it doesn’t hurt at all? When have I ever hit my wife!” Lu Zhao asked his mother with a dark expression.
Where did these rumors come from?
“Still trying to argue! I saw it all clearly!” Chen Cuilan, furious, chased Lu Zhao around the courtyard with the broom.
Lu Zhao didn’t run. If he did, his mother would really break the broom. He couldn’t bring himself to lay hands on her either. As a Village Tyrant, being beaten by his own mother and running away like a scared rabbit would be too shameful.
Su Yunqi stood there, dumbfounded, watching the scene. Suddenly, she felt like eating again. She quickly picked up a piece of egg and ate while watching the drama unfold.
Good! A jerk like him deserves a beating!
Lu Zhao got fed up with being chased by his mother, so he grabbed the broom and snapped it in half with a loud crack. His arm muscles bulged, as if they were about to tear through his shirt.
That broom had been made from one hundred and eight bamboo pieces!
How many pairs of chopsticks would that be! It had to be said that his hand strength was truly impressive!
“You unfilial son! How dare you try to scare me!” Chen Cuilan, enraged, pointed her finger at him and scolded.
“I didn’t! Mother, you’re back, so hurry up and cook. Neither of us can cook, and we’ve been starving all day. You don’t care about me, but you can’t ignore your daughter-in-law. She just came here and is hungry. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were an Evil Mother-in-Law, withholding food from her.” Lu Zhao cleverly changed the subject.
“You!” Chen Cuilan trembled with anger. This little brat was still trying to say he wasn’t threatening her!
Su Yunqi blinked, turning her clever little head. She realized she needed to find someone to back her up. Her mother-in-law seemed to be able to handle Lu Zhao and might even be on her side. She had found her ally!
“Mother! Lu Zhao hit me this morning! He even drove me back to my mother’s house, wouldn’t give me food, only let me eat cornbread, and made me drink bitter melon soup, wuwuwu. Mother, can I stay here for a while? I’m so hungry.” Su Yunqi rushed to Chen Cuilan, hugging her arm and quietly sobbing, complaining.
She cried with the sorrow of a pear blossom in the rain, pitiful and heart-wrenching. This broke Chen Cuilan’s heart, who had given birth to eight sons and no daughters.
If this were her own little daughter, she would’ve surely peeled Lu Zhao’s skin off!
“Don’t cry, don’t cry. You eat something to fill your stomach first, and I’ll make you some food right away. What do you want to eat?” Chen Cuilan, still glaring at Lu Zhao with murderous intent, patted Su Yunqi’s back to comfort her.
Lu Zhao had never seen such a gentle side of his mother. He couldn’t help but get goosebumps. His expression was subtle as he rubbed his arm.
“Mother, noodles will do. No need for vegetables or meat, as long as I can fill my stomach.”
“Alright, alright, I’ll make it right away! You eat some vegetables to tide you over first.”
“You! Go and fetch some water! I’ll deal with you later!”
Chen Cuilan spoke sweetly to Su Yunqi, but immediately told Lu Zhao to go away when their eyes met.
Seeing a fleeting smug smile on his little wife’s face, Lu Zhao finally didn’t feel so bad.
Well, at least it seemed like it worked out by accident.
Lu Zhao scratched his nose, enduring his hunger, and went to fetch water.

Chen Cuilan not only made Su Yunqi noodles but also topped them with a small bowl of meat sauce. It was so satisfying to eat!
Finally, her empty stomach was filled. She couldn’t help but rub her little belly, her expression relaxed.
Lu Zhao had already finished fetching the water. He stood at the door, being punished to stand still, his gaze fixed on his little wife.
He pondered for a long time but couldn’t figure out when he had sent her back to her mother’s house, let alone hit her or only fed her cornbread. She must be deliberately saying these things, right?
She didn’t really misunderstand him, did she?
After all, he had worked hard to marry her, and he was even willing to cook. Those things she said, weren’t they nonsense?
But Su Yunqi wasn’t a petty person, and she had a good heart. Even though there had been a lot of unpleasantness earlier, she remembered that Lu Zhao had shown some care for her last night and had even massaged her waist for an entire evening.
She decided to speak up for him, albeit reluctantly.
Well, they couldn’t get a divorce now. Life still had to go on.
Su Yunqi puffed up her cheeks and, in no time, convinced herself.
She quietly moved over to Chen Cuilan’s side, stretching her jade-like neck like a thief, and whispered in her ear.
“Mother, Lu Zhao hasn’t eaten yet.”
Chen Cuilan thought Su Yunqi was still hungry and didn’t want to say it out loud, but she was surprised when Su Yunqi was actually trying to speak up for Lu Zhao. While feeling pleased, she also couldn’t help but feel exasperated.
Such a good little wife, and this brat wasn’t cherishing her. Did he think he could reach the sky?
If it weren’t for Su Yunqi being caught by the little bully, would he have ever had a chance to marry her?
“Come over and eat, your wife is worried about you being hungry. I won’t be the bad guy anymore, but I’m not cooking again. You eat whatever’s there.”
Chen Cuilan said loudly, and those words of concern embarrassed Su Yunqi so much that she quickly shook her head and waved her hands. “I’m not worried about him! I don’t care about him!”
Hearing this, Lu Zhao smirked and, with large strides, came over, scooping Su Yunqi up and caressed her cheeks. He even leaned down to nibble at her rosy cheek. “I know you’re worried about me. No need to say it.”
The intimacy didn’t seem like something she disliked, and Chen Cuilan was puzzled. Not wanting to witness this eye-searing scene, she turned and walked away. “You two, make sure to close the door when you leave.”
“Mother, where are you going? I’ll go with you!” Su Yunqi wanted to escape but was pinned tightly in Lu Zhao’s embrace and couldn’t get away.
Finally, she got annoyed and glared at him, her courage returning. “Are you going to eat or not? You’re so annoying!”
“Oh, I’m annoying now.”
Lu Zhao was indifferent. He had already firmly trapped her in his arms and pressed his forehead against hers, asking seriously. “When did I ever send you away? Su Yunqi, it’s fine if you’re throwing a tantrum, but isn’t it a bit too much to slander me? I hit you? I only gave your butt a little tap. Does that count as hitting? Have you ever seen me hit anyone?
I only made you eat cornbread and drink bitter melon soup? I brought out the meat. You took the cornbread and stuffed it into your mouth, and I couldn’t stop you. I gave you the bitter melon soup because you were choking—do you want me to just watch you choke to death? Huh?” Lu Zhao looked at her dangerously.
He had the clear expression that if she didn’t explain herself properly, he was really going to teach her a lesson.
Su Yunqi had almost forgotten about this incident, but now he brought it up again. She pursed her lips in displeasure, and her thick eyelashes lowered.
“You told me to go back to my mother’s house. I just urged you to hurry up and cook, and then you told me to leave. Jerk.” She murmured softly, feeling upset.
He had never treated her this badly before!

There must be a reason why Su Yunqi dared to push the well-known Village Tyrant, Lu Zhao, around.
They had been classmates for seven years. Lu Zhao, with his sharp tongue, loved teasing her.
He would call her “spoiled baby.” eat her candy, and then replace it with a new one.
But he also carried her home when her feet hurt and she was alone, braided her hair when she was too lazy to do it herself, and she even made Lu Zhao write her homework!
It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but Su Yunqi’s academic performance wasn’t great.
She managed to get into middle school through her own efforts, but getting into high school was entirely due to Lu Zhao’s efforts.
