Chapter 10: I Heard Someone Died Here
Lu Zhao stepped on Zheng Ye’s hand again, his tone cold.
“Ah! Ah! Ah! I’m sorry, Su Yunqi… Sister-in-law! I’m sorry, I was wrong. I didn’t know any better. I won’t ever bother you again. Please forgive me!”
Zheng Ye kowtowed several times to Su Yunqi, his forehead bleeding from the impact, looking pitiful and miserable.
However, Su Yunqi looked on with immense satisfaction, proudly puffing out her chest.
Hmph, can’t act so arrogant now, can you?
Once it seemed enough, Lu Zhao ordered them to leave. “If you’re not satisfied, come find me. If you dare to come after my wife again, I’ll make you suffer worse than today! Leave!”
Lu Zhao kicked them far away.
“Brother Zhao, the hero saves the beauty! Wah, so handsome! I wish I had a man to protect me too!” Xiao Jianli looked at Lu Zhao like a lovesick fool, his eyes full of stars, totally in awe.
“Get lost!” Lu Zhao was disgusted, feeling goosebumps all over.
“Wah, Brother Lu, you’re so heartless!” Xiao Jianli pouted and twisted his hips in a fake sad manner.
It was truly eye-watering.
Su Yunqi silently ran to Lu Zhao’s side.
“Is he like a caterpillar turned into a man? It’s a little scary.” Su Yunqi tiptoed and tugged on Lu Zhao’s arm, trying to whisper to him. Her messy hair fluttered in the wind and brushed against Lu Zhao’s face.
Her small eyes kept sneaking glances at Xiao Jianli, suspiciously. It seemed like she was wondering how he got into Lu Zhao’s team. Do little bullies not need any qualifications now?
Before Lu Zhao could respond, Xiao Jianli stamped his foot, full of indignation. “Sister-in-law! It’s me! Don’t you remember me? Last time, when your school had a big cleanup, I was the one who cleaned the area your class was responsible for!”
“Oh, it’s you.” Su Yunqi suddenly realized, as though something clicked in her memory. No wonder he seemed so familiar.
At that time, Su Yunqi was in charge of cleaning the campus, but her partner had an upset stomach and couldn’t show up. She was left to clean alone, and no matter how much she tried, she couldn’t finish. The fallen leaves just kept getting scattered around, making it look as though she hadn’t cleaned at all.
If the teacher came to check, she would definitely be angry at her.
With no choice, she had to keep sweeping, and sweep, and sweep. Then a fool rushed over, kicked the tree, knocking the leaves down, and then went on a cleaning spree.
He finished sweeping all the leaves, and Su Yunqi was left with a peaceful moment.
She thought it was another student from a different grade who mistakenly cleaned her class’s area. She didn’t say anything, just quietly watched him clean while she got a free pass.
“Yes! It was me! Brother Zhao sent me to help you. He saw you were about to cry while sweeping the leaves, and he couldn’t bear it.” Xiao Jianli grinned and came closer, praising Brother Zhao.
“Alright, alright, give me the stuff, you can go now. We need to head back, it’s getting dark.”
Lu Zhao, this scheming rough guy, waited until Xiao Jianli finished speaking before stopping him. Wasn’t that just making it more obvious?
“Okay, okay, I’m going now.” Xiao Jianli, with a sense of accomplishment, walked off with an air of superiority, his walk full of swagger.
Leaving Su Yunqi standing there with a confused expression, not sure what to do next.
“Let’s go.” Lu Zhao pretended not to notice and grabbed the things, leading Su Yunqi home.

Su Yunqi, with great patience, didn’t ask until they were halfway home, in the dark.
She grabbed Lu Zhao’s arm and hesitantly looked up at him.
“Were you following me the whole time?”
Otherwise, how could he have known she was about to cry from sweeping the leaves and gotten someone to help so quickly?
“You guess.”
Lu Zhao didn’t give a direct answer but instead leisurely responded with a question.
He was deliberately pretending to be mysterious and not telling the truth!
Su Yunqi was, once again, furious!
She huffed, stomped her foot in frustration, and quickened her pace, trying to walk ahead.
But Lu Zhao spoke again, his voice low and cold. “I heard someone died here.”
The moment he spoke, Su Yunqi felt her scalp tingle, and she froze in place, too scared to move.
“You—you’re talking nonsense! I grew up here, how could I not know?”
“Do you think your parents would tell you about these scary things?”
“I remember, it was three years ago. A man went out in the middle of the night, drunk out of his mind. He was so wasted that when he got here—yeah, he fell and died.”
“He hit his head and died instantly. I heard it was so bad that his soul couldn’t rest. They say he shows up every night.”
“He likes to follow pretty little girls, tsk, such a pervert. He even followed someone home, climbed into their bed, and then comes out quietly at night.”
“He’d lean in close to their ear and whisper, ‘Hello!’“
Lu Zhao emphasized the last part.
“Ah!!!”
Sure enough, Su Yunqi was terrified, too scared to continue walking. She quickly backed up and wrapped her arms around Lu Zhao’s waist.
“Wuwuwu, Lu Zhao, you’re definitely just scaring me! You’re so annoying!” Su Yunqi complained, her face buried in Lu Zhao’s chest as if she were an ostrich, thinking that covering her head would make everything fine.
Lu Zhao couldn’t help but curl his lips into a smile, pretending to be serious as he spoke. “If I’m so annoying, how about we just separate and go our own ways? I won’t bother you anymore.”
However, his arm remained wrapped around Su Yunqi’s slender waist, unwilling to let go.
“I don’t want to! I’ll bother you when we get home! Carry me back, I don’t want to walk anymore.” Su Yunqi, frightened, immediately climbed onto his back and urged him to hurry home.
Lu Zhao, feeling his little wife willingly throw herself into his arms, smiled in satisfaction. This time, he didn’t have to argue with Su Yunqi. He quickly carried her back home.
But when they reached the door, they saw a dark figure lingering nearby. Su Yunqi thought she had brought the pervert back with her and immediately covered her eyes, screaming in terror.
“Wuwuwu, Lu Zhao! There’s something dirty! What should we do?”
“What dirty thing?”
Chen Cuilan stepped out from the shadows, looking puzzled.
Hearing a woman’s voice, Su Yunqi hesitantly opened her fingers, peeking out with her eyes. When she saw it was her mother-in-law, she let out a sigh of relief.
She quickly asked: “Mom, has anyone ever died from being drunk on the road from the village to town? Do they follow people home at night?”
Su Yunqi looked at Chen Cuilan with wide eyes, her lips pressed together. Her gaze was anxious and teary, making her look both pitiful and adorable.
Chen Cuilan’s heart softened instantly. Seeing Su Yunqi was like seeing her own gentle daughter.
But when Chen Cuilan shift her attention to her son, she slapped Lu Zhao’s arm again. “Stop scaring her! You little rascal, you really deserve a beating!”
Then she said to Su Yunqi: “Yunqi, don’t be scared. Lu Zhao was just trying to scare you. No one’s ever died here, and nothing’s going to follow you home.” Chen Cuilan spoke in the softest, most comforting voice she had in her entire life.
“That’s good.” Su Yunqi patted her chest in relief, finally able to relax.
“Who says no one’s ever died here? I didn’t scare her, it’s clearly you, who was lying.” Lu Zhao raised an eyebrow indifferently and let his little wife down from his back, who had been squirming.
“It’s all your fault!”
Su Yunqi was furious and slapped Lu Zhao’s arm. But his arm was as hard as steel, and when she struck it, her palm became red and swollen from the impact.
“Ah!” She covered her hand, her eyes filling with tears.
Chen Cuilan, enraged, immediately slapped Lu Zhao again. “It’s all your fault! Why’s your arm so hard? Look what you’ve done to your wife!”
“Yunqi, does it hurt? Do you want me to put some medicine on it? Next time, don’t slap his arm. Slap his neck, pinch his ears, or kick his thigh. His ears are really sensitive, he can’t stand having his ears pinched.” Chen Cuilan gently blew on Su Yunqi’s palm, comforting her while offering advice.
She really liked this little daughter-in-law of hers. She was so sweet and easy to care for, and her gentle nature made her so lovable. If it came to a fight, she wouldn’t be able to beat Lu Zhao, so she had to support her daughter-in-law in other ways.
