Chapter 34: The Child Was Gone

“You!”

“Stop making noise, I’m hungry. Buy me a meal, Lu Zhao.”

Su Yunqi came over and grabbed Lu Zhao’s arm, staring at him with her clear and beautiful eyes. She acted pitiful and coquettish.

Lu Zhao immediately softened. He reached out and patted Su Yunqi’s head, letting go of his previous irritation. “Alright.”

Nothing could be allowed to delay his little wife from eating. As for these two men, they were simply jealous that he had such a beautiful little wife. Arguing with him was only giving him face.

Lu Zhao was about to turn back to his bed when the man wearing glasses, who was unafraid of death, made a sarcastic comment. He probably hadn’t been beaten before.

“Do you have money to buy a lunch box? The lunch boxes on the train are very expensive. Why not wait another hour to buy one? If they can’t sell them, the price will drop. Otherwise, you’ll end up buying one and feel regret for a year. Although cold food tastes bad, it’s cheap.”

At this point, Su Yunqi was about to get angry. She widened her eyes, ready to shout, but her head suddenly started throbbing again. Scenes of strange images flashed in her mind.

Lu Zhao immediately realized that her headache had started again. She always experienced the pain before the strange images appeared.

“Is it your head again?” Lu Zhao hurriedly picked up Su Yunqi and placed her back onto the bed.

This time, the headache seemed to last much longer than usual.

“Lu Zhao…” Su Yunqi clutched her head, her eyes closed, calling him weakly. Her voice was as faint as a kitten’s mew.

“I’m here, don’t be scared.”

Seeing her like this, Lu Zhao was helpless. He could only anxiously comfort her, rubbing her forehead and temples.

Just then, Xiao Jianli arrived. He had come to talk to Lu Zhao about something, but upon seeing Su Yunqi looking unwell, he immediately inquired.

“Brother Zhao, what’s wrong with sister-in-law?”

“She has a headache. Hurry, get some hot water, and also take the towel out of the bag. I’ll apply it on her. Quickly!” Lu Zhao’s tone grew more impatient and harsh as he rushed.

The man with glasses and his friend thought they were the ones who had caused Su Yunqi’s condition, so they immediately kept quiet and rushed to hide in the restroom.

They thought to themselves, though she was pretty, she was sick, and they certainly couldn’t marry someone like her.

Lu Zhao, however, was oblivious to their thoughts; otherwise, he would have punched them right then.

“Alright, I’ll go right now!” Xiao Jianli quickly went to get the hot water. In less than a minute, he returned with a kettle of hot water. Lu Zhao immediately soaked the towel and placed the warm cloth on Su Yunqi’s forehead.

The effect of the hot towel was quite good, and Su Yunqi almost immediately calmed down. However, she remained fragile, lying still with her eyes closed, her brows tightly furrowed, looking like a delicate porcelain doll.

Lu Zhao was still worried. After thinking for a moment, he instructed Xiao Jianli. “Go ask if anyone has any painkillers.”

If she’s still uncomfortable, they’ll have to resort to painkillers to get by. It wouldn’t do for her to keep having these headaches. Once they got to the Provincial Capital, he’d take her to a hospital to check her head for any problems.

Lu Zhao was deeply concerned, his gaze fixed on Su Yunqi with worry and tenderness.

“Alright.” Xiao Jianli replied.

Where on a train would anyone have painkillers? But knowing that his Brother Zhao wouldn’t want to hear this, he chose not to say anything and went to ask.

Another ten minutes passed, and Lu Zhao had nearly finished the whole kettle of hot water. Su Yunqi’s forehead had turned slightly red from the warmth, and only then did she weakly open her eyes.

Her eyes were red and swollen, looking pitiful.

“How do you feel? Is it any better? Does it still hurt?” Lu Zhao half-knelt beside her bed, gently touching her pale little face, his voice filled with concern.

Su Yunqi didn’t respond. She simply shook her head, her lips trembling, and tears began to fall in streams.

“What’s wrong? If you’re still in pain, we can get off at the next station. I’ll take you to the hospital, okay? Didn’t you say you were hungry earlier? Do you want to eat something first?”

Lu Zhao was frantic. He gently wiped away Su Yunqi’s tears, clumsily trying to comfort her. A big, rough man like him, seeing Su Yunqi like this, had his own eyes redden with worry. He wished he could take away her pain.

If he had known earlier, he wouldn’t have gone to trouble those two annoying men. That way, Su Yunqi wouldn’t have been so upset and triggered like this.

“The child is gone.”

Su Yunqi continued to shake her head. She bit her lip and let out a soft sob, her tears falling like pearls. She felt as though her heart was breaking.

Lu Zhao immediately cradled her head, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, his voice trembling as he whispered.

“It hasn’t happened yet, wife, don’t be afraid. The child will be fine!”

They had only been married for such a short time. Even if she was pregnant, it wasn’t noticeable yet, and they hadn’t done anything. The child couldn’t just disappear like that! It must have happened later!

Su Yunqi’s tears suddenly stopped. She quickly wiped them away and sat up.

“Do you have paper and a pen?”

There were too many people around, and Su Yunqi certainly couldn’t speak openly. If someone overheard, it would be disastrous. She’d be seen as a monster and taken away.

At that moment, the ever-reliable Xiao Jianli made his appearance! He came running back, panting and holding a packet of painkillers.

“I found some painkillers, Brother Zhao!”

“Don’t ask, just hurry up and go.” Lu Zhao didn’t bother coming up with an excuse. He just ordered Xiao Jianli to get to work.

“Alright.”

What else could Xiao Jianli do? Of course, he would listen to his Brother Zhao. Luckily, their train cars were connected, or who would Brother Zhao ask to run errands for him?

He shook his head and left again.

Su Yunqi wasted no time. She quickly grabbed Lu Zhao’s hand and wrote a line of words on his palm.

“I saw that I’m pregnant.”

“Go on.”

Lu Zhao furrowed his brows and nodded, indicating that he understood the message.

Su Yunqi quickly continued writing, her index finger almost burning with the effort. Writing this way was really slow, and there was so much information. If she wrote too quickly, Lu Zhao might not be able to read it clearly.

Fortunately, paper and pen were easier to find than painkillers. It wasn’t long before Xiao Jianli returned with them. Before he could say anything, Lu Zhao shooed him away.

“We have something to do. You can come back later.”

“Alright.” Xiao Jianli, who had played such a large role, was now irrelevant!

He theatrically clutched his chest, pretending to be heartbroken, and dramatically left the scene.

With the paper and pen, Lu Zhao could finally understand the full story.

Since it was the man with glasses who triggered the flash of memory, it was clear that he was involved, but not directly. It was more like a butterfly flapping its wings and causing a series of changes.

It was truly heartbreaking.
