The cloudless sky stretched endlessly—a vast expanse of blue by day and a boundless canvas of blackness at night. After half a year of rain, it was pristine and clear. Tonight, the stars twinkled like diamonds scattered across black velvet. It was beautiful and mysterious.
Shen Yanming and Bi Qiao’an sat side-by-side, gazing upward. The twinkling stars seemed to wink back at them.
“Wait… why aren’t there any?” Someone voiced their confusion.
“Don’t just stare at one spot,” advised Bi Qiao’an. “Look in all directions. Each meteor appears in a different place and moves incredibly fast, vanishing in the blink of an eye.”
Just as she spoke, a meteor streaked across the sky and disappeared.
“I didn’t even finish making my wish!” Bi Qiao’an pouted, playfully complaining to Shen Yanming.
He knew she was joking and put an arm around her. “There will be more. Just make your wishes then. When one meteor disappears, another will take its place.”
“All right, you make a good point!”
As they approached the predicted peak time, the meteors became more frequent. By around 11 PM, they were streaking across the sky, a dazzling rain of shooting stars.
Nestled in Shen Yanming’s embrace, Bi Qiao’an silently wished for them to stay together forever.
While the meteor shower was spectacular, constantly looking up could cause neck strain. Plus, the view ultimately became repetitive. After a while, many felt the pull of sleep and returned to their tents—including Shen Yanming and Bi Qiao’an.
It wasn’t until 1:30 AM that the field emptied out. Bi Qiao’an slept groggily in the tent while Shen Yanming remained awake. Seeing that it was about time, Shen Yanming roused Bi Qiao’an. Once she had regained her senses, he took her hand and led her out of the tent, heading towards the Qingli Mountain Scenic Area entrance.
It took them nearly half an hour to reach the gate. Shen Yanming knocked on the security room door. After a while, a guard emerged to verify their identities and then allowed them through.
Thanking the guard, Shen Yanming slipped him a couple of packs of cigarettes. Satisfied, the guard assured them that he would let them back in at any time.
Shen Yanming nodded with a smile and, with his arm around Bi Qiao’an, exited the scenic area. A couple of hundred meters ahead, they noticed a parked black sedan.
Shen Yanming opened the door, ushering Bi Qiao’an into the back seat before taking the passenger seat himself. As the car started moving, Bi Qiao’an glanced at the driver, who seemed familiar.
“Lie down and rest for now. I’ll wake you when we arrive,” Shen Yanming said to Bi Qiao’an.
She nodded. Without caring about appearances, she flopped onto the seat and closed her eyes. She wasn’t truly sleeping—simply resting.
Half an hour later, the car stopped at a warehouse.
Zeng Yiming pulled a set of keys from his pocket. “Everything you asked for is inside.”
Shen Yanming accepted the keys and unlocked the warehouse door. Stepping inside, he flicked on the lights, revealing a several hundred square meter space packed with supplies.
Pigs, lambs, calves, foals, chicks, ducklings, goslings, and quails filled the room. Even a crate of bees hummed quietly, joined by buckets teeming with fish, shrimp, and crab fry.
His gaze shifted to rows of thin, half-meter tall seedlings, each labeled with a handwritten tag. Neat stacks of sacks lined the walls—the heirloom seeds Shen Yanming had requested.
“You didn’t give me much to go on, so I made some assumptions. I hope this is what you need,” Zeng Yiming said, watching Shen Yanming’s careful inspection.
“What do you mean, ‘hope’? This is perfect—it far exceeds my expectations!” Shen Yanming’s genuine surprise was evident. He had given Zeng Yiming only basic instructions, yet the preparations were remarkably thorough.
For example, Shen Yanming had asked for poultry and livestock, but Zeng Yiming had provided a variety of breeds—bantams, Silkies, gamefowl, as well as cattle, yaks, goats, sheep, and more. He’d even ensured there were both males and females of each kind.
Similarly, where Shen Yanming had mentioned a few fruit tree saplings, Zeng Yiming had sourced a wide selection. The same held true for the tea trees and coffee plants; Zeng Yiming had found many varieties and even expanded the scope to include nut trees and ornamentals.
Seeing Shen Yanming’s satisfaction, Zeng Yiming relaxed. “But seriously, why all of this? It’s like you’re starting a farm.”
“Well, that’s exactly the idea—to find a small valley, plant some crops, and raise some chickens,” Shen Yanming replied with a smile.
Zeng Yiming chuckled. “Someone like you? A big shot turning farmer?”
Shen Yanming didn’t elaborate. “Thank you for your efforts this time.”
“No big deal,” Zeng Yiming shrugged. “Just some extra trips. And you paid me well.”
Shen Yanming nodded. “Still, gathering all this so quickly must have meant calling in favors. I appreciate it. If you ever need help, just ask.”
“Deal. Your word means a lot.”
After receiving his compensation, Zeng Yiming left with a grin. Shen Yanming bid him farewell, reminding him to travel safely and send a message once home.
With Zeng Yiming gone, Shen Yanming inspected the warehouse again and found no issues. He then checked on the young animals and seedlings and confirmed their health before Bi Qiao’an stored them in her planting space.
Bi Qiao’an used her will to confine the young animals to the meadow at the mountain’s base. She released the fish, shrimp, and crab fry into the lake below and placed the beehive in her garden, letting them develop freely.
After securing the living creatures, Shen Yanming collected the sacks of heirloom seeds and placed them into the storage space.
“The high-yield seeds we bought before were cultivated varieties that don’t breed true,” Shen Yanming explained to Bi Qiao’an. “Even if we saved their seeds, the next generation wouldn’t inherit the desired traits. These landraces may have lower yields, but they self-seed reliably.”
She nodded, unconcerned. The pair sat waiting for the delivery to arrive.
Within an hour, Shen Yanming heard an approaching vehicle. Opening the warehouse door, he saw a medium-sized truck parked outside. Three burly men were unloading cargo.
Spotting Shen Yanming, the driver hurried over. “Mr. Shen, I’ve brought everything. Shall we unload it here or send it to your home?”
