The lunch at the Fu family was lavish, and the food was delicious. Wei Yuxian ate heartily, feeling satisfied with a full belly. She had never eaten so well before.
After lunch, Wei Yuxian sat at the table, unsure of what to do. The servants cleared the table and tidied up the kitchen, leaving her with nothing to do.
At home, she was responsible for all the household chores. If she didn’t do them, she would face her mother’s verbal abuse and beatings with a bamboo stick.
Her life at home was like that of a stray dog.
Fu Xuanyi waved for Aunt Fu to come over and instructed, “Take Madam to rest.”
“Yes, Master Xuanyi,” Aunt Fu responded. “Madam, please follow me.”
Wei Yuxian stood up, and Fu Xuanyi added, “Have a good rest and don’t think too much.”
She softly replied with an “okay” and followed Aunt Fu upstairs to a certain room.
Aunt Fu led her inside and said, “Madam, this will be your room from now on. Please have a look around and let us know if there’s anything unsatisfactory. We’ll make improvements immediately.”
Wei Yuxian glanced around the room, and her first impression was its size—it was incredibly spacious, twice the size of her family’s living room!
Her second impression was its beauty—the room’s decoration was lovely, predominantly white with plenty of furniture and items, making it very comfortable.
She had no complaints; on the contrary, she was very satisfied, so much so that it felt unreal.
So, this would be her room from now on? Could she really have such a beautiful room?
Wei Yuxian politely smiled at Aunt Fu and said, “This place is wonderful. I really like it. Thank you, Aunt Fu.”
Aunt Fu quickly waved her hand, not daring to accept her thanks. She said, “All of this was ordered by Master Xuanyi. If you want to thank someone, you should thank him, Madam.”
Wei Yuxian responded with an “Oh.”
Aunt Fu escorted her to the room, completing her task. She said, “Madam, please rest well. I won’t disturb you anymore. If you need anything, feel free to call me or any other servants in the mansion.”
“Alright.”
Aunt Fu stepped back and considerately closed the door, giving her some space.
Wei Yuxian carefully examined every corner of the room, reaching out to touch things she had never seen before.
After a lap around the room, she broke out in a light sweat. The weather was hot, and any movement easily led to perspiration.
Wei Yuxian sat down on the chair, searching for the fan’s silhouette in the room but found none. Instead, she found the air conditioner remote control.
There was only one air conditioner in the room that could cool down the temperature. Holding the remote control, she hesitated whether to turn it on.
Air conditioning consumed a lot of electricity. It could cost over ten yuan per night to run, and she was wary of electricity bills back in the dormitory.
In their dorm, the air conditioner never stopped as long as the three of them were inside. They had the money and didn’t care about the electricity bill, but she couldn’t afford to be indifferent.
Living in the same dormitory, she couldn’t avoid paying her share of the electricity bill. Even if she asked her roommates to be more frugal, they wouldn’t listen.
Thinking about the expensive electricity bill, Wei Yuxian sighed and set down the air conditioner remote control. She decided to sit quietly for a while, hoping to cool down naturally.
She went to open the French windows, attempting to let in some cool breeze from outside. However, the wind that blew in was unexpectedly hot, making her sweat profusely. She quickly closed the windows.
After sitting for a while and feeling a bit cooler, she noticed her drowsiness creeping in after the satisfying meal. She walked over to the large bed in the room and lay down to sleep.
Though she still felt hot, she could endure it. Gradually, as she persevered, she fell asleep.
In the study, after listening to Aunt Fu’s report, Fu Xuanyi nodded and instructed the person to leave, focusing on his work.
Around two o’clock, two unexpected guests arrived at the residence: Fu Xuanyi’s father and mother.
Actually, when Mrs. Fu found out that Wei Yuxian was carrying Fu Xuanyi’s child, she wanted to come over immediately. However, they were busy with other matters at that time, so she decided to have lunch and take a nap at home first.
Upon waking up, she hurriedly came over, expecting to see Wei Yuxian right away. However, upon arrival, she was informed that Wei Yuxian was still sleeping.
So she went to Fu Xuanyi’s study and asked, “When will that girl wake up?”
Fu Xuanyi, “…”
“I don’t know. She was tired this morning, so I let her rest,” he said with unconcealed concern in his tone.
Mrs. Fu pursed her lips, not looking like a nearly seventy-year-old lady at all, and asked, “What do you think of her? Is she good or bad at heart?”
Fu Xuanyi took out Wei Yuxian’s information, and his mother, while looking at it, commented, “She’s good, just a bit timid.”
The more Mrs. Fu looked at Wei Yuxian’s information, the more distressed she became, especially upon learning about how her parents treated her poorly and how she was exploited by her two brothers. It infuriated her!
Slamming the paper on the table, she exclaimed, “What kind of people are they?! How can there be parents like this in the world?! Not only do they not allow their child to study, but they also have to support two worthless parasites!”
“This child is pitiful too. She’s carrying the blood of our Fu family. She’s one of us now. We mustn’t neglect her in the future, do you understand?”
“Yes.”
The more Mrs. Fu thought about it, the more she felt sorry for Wei Yuxian. She stood up and said, “I’ll go check on that child.”
Fu Xuanyi also stood up and said, “I’ll come with you.”
The mother and son walked out of the study and, led by Aunt Fu, arrived at Wei Yuxian’s room. They gently opened the door, only to be hit by a wave of heat, leaving all three of them stunned.
Why was it so hot?
Mrs. Fu walked in first, and the first thing she noticed was the position of the air conditioner—it wasn’t on. No wonder the room was so hot!
Then she saw Wei Yuxian lying on the bed, wearing a washed-out outfit, not covered by a blanket, with sweat on her forehead, sleeping restlessly.
Upon seeing the situation, Aunt Fu hurriedly turned on the air conditioner, wanting to apologize to the elder Fu but hesitated because of Wei Yuxian sleeping on the bed.
Fu Xuanyi walked to the bedside with a serious expression, took a tissue, and gently wiped the sweat from Wei Yuxian’s forehead.
He instructed Aunt Fu to stay and take care of her, waiting for the room to cool down before adjusting the air conditioner temperature, then left the room with his mother.
In Mrs. Fu’s mind lingered the pitiful image of Wei Yuxian lying on the bed, small and frail like a delicate white flower that could wilt with a gust of wind.
“Why would this child endure the heat?” she wondered aloud.
Fu Xuanyi pondered for a moment before saying, “She’s reluctant to turn it on.”
“What’s the harm in that? It’s just an air conditioner. How much could it cost? Even if it’s on all day, it won’t use up much money! It breaks my heart to see her suffer in this heat,” she expressed her concern, fearing that Wei Yuxian would suffer from the heat.
Then, considering Wei Yuxian’s upbringing and the hardships she endured, Mrs. Fu understood why she acted that way.
In light of this, she truly was a good child.
If she had a malicious heart, she would have eagerly enjoyed such favorable conditions without hesitation, feeling entitled to it.
Mrs. Fu sighed and said, “When she wakes up, I’ll take her to buy some clothes and necessary items. Once she’s here with us, she won’t have to suffer anymore.”
