Chapter 34.1
A group of thirteen people from Hong Kong arrived at the valley outside Qingxi Village around two in the afternoon.
Mr. Zhao and the others got off the car, looked up, and surveyed the surroundings.
The area was surrounded by lush mountains on both sides, and the valley indeed seemed like a good place to be.
Fang Lin said: “Please, everyone, follow me.”
The group, all having come alone, followed Fang Lin up the mountain. Those who were closer to each other formed small groups of two or three, each going to their respective houses on the mountain.
The rules were the same as before: they could only move around within this area on the mountain and were not allowed to go down to the village.
Li Dingbang and Xiao Ma went up to meet the others.
Li Dingbang said: “Please have a seat for a moment. Doctor Guan will be here shortly.”
Mr. Zhao responded: “I heard from Xiao Zhang that Dr. Guan is still the doctor at your sanatorium. She must be very busy, right?”
Li Dingbang smiled lightly. “Not busy. Doctor Guan only works one or two hours a day.”
Moreover, after they left, Dr. Guan’s working hours would be reduced to just Mondays.
Speaking of her working hours, it seemed Dr. Guan had felt that limiting her consultations to only Mondays was a bit excessive, so she had arrived at the sanatorium early today.
Li Dingbang wasn’t too busy in the morning either, so he paid some attention to the situation. He realized that the quality of the doctors varied, and it couldn’t be generalized.
This sanatorium was quite unique, as patients who came here were those who had been deemed incurable or were difficult to treat by other military hospitals. These patients were sent from far and wide.
Therefore, after Director Zhang classified the patients, starting from the second batch, about fifty to sixty percent of the patients were classified as level one patients, all of whom were under Dr. Guan’s care.
According to the rules, Dr. Guan’s patients should have been two or three times more than those handled by Deng Weimin, which should have made her particularly busy. In reality, she spent much less time than Deng Weimin, as her consultation speed was particularly fast, her diagnoses accurate, and she worked quickly during acupuncture.
After finishing her own work in the morning, Dr. Guan, feeling bored, went to help Deng Weimin with some patients.
After a whole morning of seeing patients, Li Dingbang felt that the classification system at the sanatorium wasn’t very suitable. After discussing with Director Zhang, Dr. Guan, Deng Weimin, and Gu Sui, they decided to abolish the classification system and in the future, differentiate patients based on traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine.
Chinese medicine patients would be grouped together, and Deng Weimin would take primary responsibility. After Dr. Guan’s consultation every Monday, the patients would be handed over to Deng Weimin to manage. Deng Weimin had more experience, which would save Dr. Guan from worrying in case anything went wrong during the time she wasn’t available.
For Guan Yue, this was no problem; it all depended on Deng Weimin’s opinion.
Deng Weimin immediately agreed! He acknowledged that Guan Yue’s medical skills had completely surpassed his own. After the merger, while Guan Yue treated the patients, he could learn from her on the side.
However, these matters were not convenient to discuss with Mr. Zhao and the others. They only needed to know that Guan Yue would be available when she had the time.
Mr. Zhao and the others were a bit surprised. “A doctor as capable as Dr. Guan only works one or two hours a day?”
“It’s precisely because she’s so capable that she only needs to work one or two hours a day!” Li Dingbang replied.
Mr. Zhao nodded. “That’s true. A genius can’t be judged by ordinary standards.”
Li Dingbang smiled faintly, glancing to his left. “Look, here comes Dr. Guan.”
Everyone turned to look, and a young girl in a light blue long dress was walking up from the mountain path to the left, with a young man following her.
The group started whispering among themselves.
“Is that the girl, Dr. Guan?”
“It should be.”
“Don’t you remember? Xiao Zhang said Dr. Guan is young, and Xiao Zhang’s wife even gave her some clothes and accessories.”
They knew that, but she looked so young!
Despite having met many young geniuses, the thirteen big shots who had come from far and wide still felt uneasy seeing Guan Yue. They wondered, had Xiao Zhang deceived them?
Mr. Zhao, who came from a rough background and didn’t have these prejudices, laughed heartily and walked to the front. “Little girl, are you Dr. Guan?”
Guan Yue looked at the sturdy middle-aged man in front of her and smiled slightly. “I am Dr. Guan. You seem a bit weak.”
Mr. Zhao replied: “That’s true. Western medicine is useless. I’ve been to the hospital several times, and they couldn’t figure out what’s wrong with me. It’s still our ancestors’ traditional Chinese medicine that’s reliable. Xiao Zhang said you’re capable, so I trust you.”
So, this was one of the five who, despite not having any major illnesses, had come here at great expense to seek her help.
Guan Yue smiled lightly. “Then you’re in luck. When it comes to nourishing the body, I’m quite confident!”
Mr. Zhao chuckled. “Ha, the little girl has ambition!”
Guan Yue laughed softly. “Ambition is one thing, but let’s not waste time. Let’s get to treating the illness. Are you the first to go?”
“Yes, I, Old Zhao, will be the first!”
The other twelve people were surprised.
Mr. Zhao was so eager?
Wasn’t he concerned at all?
As the old saying goes, the more you know, the more you think, and the more you know, the more you fear.
These people had seen a lot and had their own set of rules for judging someone’s capabilities.
Mr. Zhao, who had come from a rough background, was a little different from the others; he relied mostly on his gut feeling.
In his life, there had been several close calls when he was young, having fought and almost lost his life on several occasions. He had survived by trusting his instincts.
When he had first laid eyes on Guan Yue, he had sensed something special about her. She was not an ordinary person. That’s why he had been the first to step forward and speak with her.
After talking for just a moment, Mr. Zhao felt even more convinced that this young lady was to his liking.
It was already summer, and the small green mountain was lush with flowers and trees. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the branches, casting a soft glow. The temperature was just right—neither too hot nor too cold.
Guan Yue glanced at the shade above. “Let’s have the consultation outside.”
“Sure.”
Fang Lin and a few others helped by bringing out a table and chairs from the house.
Once they were settled, Mr. Zhao, familiar with the routine, placed his hand on the table with practiced ease. His movements were swift and confident, clearly someone who had visited Chinese medicine doctors often.
Guan Yue took his pulse. After a few moments, she said: “Your body is all worn out, and you still say you’re here to nourish it? You’re making it sound too easy.”
Mr. Zhao was intrigued. “What do you mean?”
Guan Yue could feel the energy flow in his body. She easily detected that some of the meridians inside him were darker in color.
“Your left thigh was injured, wasn’t it? The blood flow is not very smooth there. Sometimes, when the weather’s bad, it aches and you feel numbness in the top of your foot. And your right shoulder blade—has it been injured too? Fortunately, it didn’t affect any internal organs. Your stomach is also not in good condition, and there are minor issues with your kidneys…”
As Guan Yue spoke about his symptoms, she lowered her head to write out a prescription.
She didn’t look up and didn’t notice that Mr. Zhao’s mouth had dropped open in surprise.
The group of onlookers, all prominent figures, couldn’t help but marvel. They didn’t know whether Mr. Zhao’s heart, liver, spleen, lungs, and kidneys were healthy, but they had heard about the two injuries that Guan Yue had mentioned. They were well-known from back in the day when Mr. Zhao had been involved in street brawls, and the injuries had even appeared in small neighborhood tabloids.
After writing out the prescription, Guan Yue handed it to Deng Baizhu. “This isn’t just about nourishing your body anymore. You’re full of ailments, and you need proper treatment. Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture will require at least twenty days to a month.”
The surrounding area fell silent. Only Guan Yue’s voice could be heard. She raised an eyebrow and looked at Mr. Zhao. “Did I say something wrong?”
Mr. Zhao chuckled and quickly replied: “No, you didn’t! You’re truly a divine doctor! As expected, it’s our ancestors’ teachings that are the most powerful.”
Guan Yue sneered internally. People were so practical—just now, they had been calling her a “little girl.” but now they were calling her a divine doctor.
“Next!”
Mr. Zhao moved aside, and Guan Yue called the next person forward. The onlookers became more eager. Several of them rushed forward, and a young man in his twenties managed to take the spot.
The group of onlookers was at least in their forties or fifties, all uncles or older men, so naturally, the youngest one would rush forward the fastest.
“Hey, Xiao Huang, you’re young and look healthy. Why are you fighting with us old guys?”
The young man, named Xiao Huang, blushed and said: “I have a serious illness, too.”
Guan Yue took his pulse and glanced at him. She couldn’t tell right away.
How could someone so young have such a condition?
She was silent for a long time. The onlookers grew curious.
“Has Xiao Huang gotten some serious illness?”
“Dr. Guan, can you tell us?”
Guan Yue glanced at Xiao Huang and said: “It’s not appropriate to say.”
“What? Is it really a serious illness? Oh no, Xiao Huang, you’re the only one left in your family’s old age. If something happens to you, what will your parents do?”
Xiao Huang’s face flushed red. After hearing that, he muttered: “Well… it doesn’t seem like a serious illness. I won’t die right away.”
“What kind of illness is it, then?”
The crowd stared eagerly at Xiao Huang and Guan Yue, their curiosity piqued.
Human nature definitely has a penchant for gossip. Just look at this—a group of wealthy big shots, and they can’t suppress their curiosity.
Xiao Huang had never intended to come here. His father had invested a great deal of money to secure this opportunity and insisted that he come. He also said that it would be good for him to travel to the mainland with a group of uncles and older men to broaden his horizons. So, Xiao Huang had been persuaded to come along.
When he first saw Guan Yue, he had been quite embarrassed. The doctor was a young woman—how could he ask her to treat such an issue?
But after seeing how confidently she treated Mr. Zhao, as if everything were under control, he couldn’t help but step forward.
Xiao Huang was nervous. “Dr. Guan, can this illness be cured?”
Mr. Zhao was curious. “What kind of illness does Xiao Huang have?”
Guan Yue glanced at Xiao Huang. “Can you talk about it?”
Xiao Huang gritted his teeth and nodded. What was there to hide? These were all uncles and older men he had known since he was a child, so he wasn’t afraid for them to know.
Guan Yue spoke calmly. “Impotence.”
“What?”
The crowd froze in shock. The young man, Xiao Huang, impotent? This was a huge deal—cutting off the family line!
Someone who had a good relationship with the Huang family immediately became anxious. “Dr. Guan, can it be treated?”
Guan Yue nodded. “Yes, it can be treated. His condition isn’t congenital; it seems to be due to an injury that wasn’t treated properly at the time.”
That person quickly asked Xiao Huang: “Tell the doctor how you got injured.”
Xiao Huang felt incredibly awkward. There wasn’t much to say—when he was in high school, he had been hot-headed and gotten into a fight, injuring himself in that area.
At first, the pain was so intense that he nearly passed out. After a while, he recovered and thought everything was fine, so he didn’t give it much thought.
Later, he realized something was wrong. His father had taken him to many doctors and even tried sending him to see women, but nothing worked.
Mr. Zhao sneered. “You got injured in a fight and hurt yourself down there? You’re so weak!”
Poor Xiao Huang, he was so embarrassed that he shrank back into his chair, feeling the disdain from a group of uncles and older men..
However, they still cared for him: “Trust Doctor Guan, he will cure you.”
Xiao Huang nodded, looking at Guan Yue with great expectation.
Guan Yue said: “…Your injury has been there for quite some time, so we need to combine acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine. It’ll take at least a week.”
A week?
“Not long, not long. It’ll be fine soon.”
Guan Yue’s skill was evident. They didn’t yet know her acupuncture abilities, but her diagnostic skills surpassed any other traditional Chinese medicine practitioner they had ever met. They now believed that Guan Yue truly had the ability to cure Zhang Mingrui.
The patients in line for consultation waited their turn. For each one, Guan Yue accurately diagnosed their conditions, and even pointed out illnesses they hadn’t realized they had.
