Apothecary of the 60s Chapter 35.2

Chapter 35.2

Meanwhile, Xiao Huang, after recovering from his health problems, went back to Hong Kong.

The next day, he went to confess to his dream goddess. Now, they were officially in a relationship.

Tsk, tsk, how sweet it was!

The Huang couple, seeing their son so full of energy every day, doing everything with vigor, were convinced that the decision they made back then was the right one.

Zhang Mingrui, originally planning to help expand his network and gain more resources from the mainland, had not expected to receive such a huge favor in return. He had received many thank-you gifts from people.

Cai Jin, who went out every day for socializing, was always greeted with smiles by the wives she encountered. They would often find various excuses to give her bags or jewelry.

When Cai Jin returned home, she smiled and told Zhang Mingrui: “We’re doing well as intermediaries. Let’s keep it up.”

Zhang Mingrui curled his lips into a smile. “I’m afraid that’s not going to be the case. There won’t be such good opportunities in the future.”

“What happened?”

“I’ve heard that in the future, it won’t be so easy to go. There will only be five spots each year, and it’s going to be extremely competitive.”

“Well, that complicates things. In the past few days, several wives have asked me about the spots to go to the mainland.”

Aside from asking about the spots to the mainland, many people were also eager to buy the whitening pills she had. Her skin had become clear, and her entire appearance had improved by at least ten years. Many people were desperate to get their hands on the good things she had.

Unfortunately, she didn’t have many of them left; she planned to use them herself. Jiang Zhi had some too, but she hadn’t said a word about it.

Neither she nor Jiang Zhi would sell their whitening pills. If people wanted them, they would have to find their own way to get them.

Zhang Mingrui said: “It doesn’t matter if they ask now. We’ll just wait for the news from the mainland. Once the spots are released, it’ll be an open auction. Whoever can afford it will get the spot.”

“Compared to this, there is something more difficult to handle right now.”

“What is it?”

“Today, Fang Lin sent a message saying that Guan Yue wants to find a teacher who specializes in virology. The conditions are flexible.”

Cai Jin: “This is indeed a bit tricky. Virology—I’ve never even heard of it. Where would we find a teacher? We don’t know anyone like that.”

Cai Jin considered the people he knew: “Why don’t we ask Dr. Robert? He’s British and a legitimate doctor. He must have quite a network in this field.”

Zhang Mingrui asked his friends overseas to inquire, but he had not received any news yet. For now, he could only try asking around.

Dr. Robert, upon hearing that the divine doctor wanted to find an expert in virology and that the conditions were flexible, slapped his thigh: “I know a virology expert, but this person is paralyzed. Can the divine doctor treat him? If the divine doctor can, he’ll definitely come.”

Zhang Mingrui furrowed his brows: “Are there no other options?”

Dr. Robert decisively shook his head: “There aren’t many people who study this, let alone experts. This person is truly amazing. He even worked in the United States before. He only returned to the UK after he was paralyzed. He’s the best candidate.”

“Then write up his resume. I’ll send it over to them for consideration.”

“Okay, no problem. I’ll write it now.”

The virology expert was a friend of his teacher, and Dr. Robert was very familiar with his background. He quickly wrote it up and handed it over to Zhang Mingrui.

Zhang Mingrui contacted Fang Lin as soon as he returned, and that afternoon, Fang Lin received the message on the other side of the river and notified Li Dingbang by phone.

Guan Yue showed the resume to Gu Sui: “Is this person skilled?”

Gu Sui: “Based on his academic experience and the institutions he’s worked with, he is indeed very impressive. I think we can give it a try.”

“Then let’s try.”

Guan Yue told Li Dingbang: “Tell him to come. I can treat him.”

Li Dingbang: “But he’s a foreigner, it might not be appropriate for him to come to our sanatorium.”

Guan Yue: “He’s a paralyzed person who can do nothing but lie in bed every day. Even if he gets better, we’ll have a few people watch over him, and he can just move around on Xiaoqing Mountain. Once I figure this out, I’ll send him away.”

Guan Yue believed that if this expert truly had genuine talent, she should be able to get started quickly.

After Li Dingbang consulted with the military district, he eventually agreed to Guan Yue’s request. Fang Lin promptly got in touch with Zhang Mingrui.

Now, it was only a matter of whether the expert would be willing to travel across the ocean to come here.

Feeling tired from reading, Guan Yue set her book aside temporarily and took a stroll around the nursing home.

Since Guan Yue started visiting the nursing home more frequently, the recovery speed of the patients there had noticeably improved.

Everyone couldn’t help but marvel. Although they all followed the treatment plans set by Guan Yue, her acupuncture results were undeniably better than theirs.

Sometimes, people had to admit that geniuses truly existed in this world.

As the Dragon Boat Festival passed at the end of the month, the summer solstice was fast approaching.

Guan Yue suddenly recalled Gu Sui’s earlier suggestion to register their marriage on the Dragon Boat Festival. At the time, she hadn’t agreed. However, after a night’s sleep, she changed her mind the next day, only for Gu Sui to not bring it up again.

Originally, she had intended to test him a little, but a leadership visit kept her so busy that she forgot all about it.

To celebrate their second anniversary of knowing each other, Gu Sui took a day off and prepared a grand lunch, filled with all of Guan Yue’s favorite dishes.

During the meal, Guan Yue casually mentioned: “Actually, the day you asked me, I changed my mind the next morning. I kept waiting for you to ask me again about getting married, but you never did.”

Gu Sui was taken aback, then let out a low chuckle. “You’re the one who’s insincere. If you really wanted to marry me, couldn’t you have asked me instead of waiting for me to bring it up?”

Guan Yue grinned sheepishly. “Well, at the time, I just wanted to see if you’d ask again. If you had, I would’ve said yes.”

Gu Sui pinched her cheek lightly. “You little rascal!”

Guan Yue grabbed his hand. “Stop pinching, or my face will get swollen and won’t look good. How about this: next week when you’re off, we’ll go to the city and take a stroll. My treat for a movie, okay?”

“Oh, so if you treat me to a movie, I’m supposed to stop being mad? Am I that easy to appease?”

Guan Yue blinked her eyes and asked: “Then what else do you want to do?”

Gu Sui replied: “How about you cook a meal for me? I’ve been the one cooking for you all along, and I’d like to taste your effort for a change.”

Under Gu Sui’s expectant gaze, Guan Yue gritted her teeth and said: “Fine, it’s just cooking, right? I’ll do it.”

Gu Sui chuckled: “Alright, I’ll be waiting for it.”

Still, the trip to the city was happening as planned—she hadn’t been to the city in a long time.

On the day of Gu Sui’s day off, the two set out early for Qingshan County. The roads to the city were much better now, and they arrived by 9 a.m. They spent the day shopping, watching a movie, and trying different foods.

Since it was a weekend, the streets were filled with young couples walking hand in hand, clearly dating.

Even in such a crowd, Guan Yue and Gu Sui stood out. He was tall and strikingly handsome, while she was beautiful and charming. The two of them walking together caught the attention of passersby, who couldn’t help but steal a second glance.

As Guan Yue snacked on sunflower seeds, she commented: “Movies nowadays are so simple in production.”

Gu Sui nodded. Compared to the movies Guan Yue had shown him before, they indeed seemed quite basic.

Guan Yue continued: “But every era has its own style. It’s still pretty interesting.”

Gu Sui asked: “Do you want to watch another one in the afternoon?”

“No, let’s not. At noon, we’ll stop by Uncle Cai’s place, and then head back in the afternoon.”

“Alright, let’s go. It’s getting late.”

They hadn’t seen Aunt Cai in a long time. When Aunt Cai saw Guan Yue, she was overjoyed. “You little rascal! How long has it been since you came to the city? I’ve missed you so much!”

“Aunt Cai, I’ve missed you too. I’ve just been too busy recently and didn’t have time to come into the city.”

Aunt Cai had heard about the nursing home in Qingxi Village, which was built because of Guan Yue. So many patients sought her out, leaving her with little free time.

“You can’t let work keep you so busy that you neglect everything else.” Aunt Cai said.

Turning to Gu Sui with a smile, she added: “Gu Sui, you need to take good care of her. She’s a little rascal, and if no one watches her, she’ll turn the world upside down.”

Gu Sui gave a faint smile. “Guan Yue is doing just fine.”

Cai Guofu returned from work, and upon hearing the conversation, he chuckled. “Xu Hua’an wrote me a letter a couple of days ago, saying that Guan Yue doesn’t listen to him anymore.”

Guan Yue retorted: “When did I ever listen to him?”

“Haha, true enough.”

Behind Cai Guofu were three individuals, their clothes patched repeatedly, carrying luggage on their shoulders. Their travel-worn appearance made it clear they had come from far away.

Cai Guofu stepped forward. “You came at just the right time. Let me introduce you. These three are doctors from Zhejiang. They’ve come specifically to join you. You’ll take them back with you later.”

Guan Yue glanced at the three and asked: “Did you receive a letter from my mentor, Deng Weimin?”

One of them replied: “No, but half a month ago, we received a letter from Sir Deng Wei’s family, recommending a good opportunity for us. There were even military personnel coordinating with our local officials, urging us to head to the Qingxi Village nursing home as soon as possible.”

Cai Guofu explained: “These three used to practice medicine and have bought medicinal herbs from me before. Since we know each other, they stopped by to visit me on their way.”

Guan Yue nodded, observing the three. Their pale, emaciated faces hinted at the hardships they had endured over the past few years.

They stayed for lunch at Cai’s house. Afterward, without delay, Guan Yue took the three doctors back to Qingxi Village.
