Chapter 36.1
Xiao Ma still didn’t understand why Guan Yue went through so much trouble over this so-called virus. What exactly was its purpose?
Xiao Ma asked: “I really don’t get it. Dr. Guan, your antidote pills are so effective. Is there any illness or poison they can’t cure? Why are you even researching this thing?”
Guan Yue smiled and said: “I can’t explain it to you now, but you’ll understand later.”
Most people’s understanding of the matter was still very limited. They thought that only visible toxins like those from venomous snakes and spiders were harmful. As for the more microscopic viruses, they assumed that what couldn’t be seen simply didn’t exist.
Take a look around. Right now, only a minority of people would bother to boil water before drinking it. If you started talking about virus transmission, those explaining it would wear themselves out, and those listening would be utterly confused. It was better not to bring it up at all!
After the group from Hong Kong left, Xiaoqing Mountain was vacated, and Professor John moved in.
Two days later, Guan Yue didn’t go to the villa in the mountains. Instead, she stayed at the sanatorium, waiting there specifically.
It wasn’t Monday, so everyone was surprised to see Guan Yue at the sanatorium. Whenever she came by, those who had unresolved questions hurried to ask her.
Deng Baishu noticed a book casually left by Guan Yue on the table, picked it up, and flipped through it. He said: “Teacher, you can read foreign languages too?”
Guan Yue paused for a moment and then replied: “Gu Sui can. Gu Sui taught me.”
“That’s amazing! You learned to read foreign books after just two years of studying under Dr. Gu?”
Guan Yue smiled and said: “It wasn’t that hard.”
That afternoon, Gu Sui wasn’t very busy. With some free time, he came over to look around. Hearing their conversation, he asked Deng Baishu: “Do you want to learn English from me?”
Deng Baishu hesitated and said with a laugh: “Hehe, I was just asking casually. I probably wouldn’t be able to learn it.”
Guan Yue gave Gu Sui a knowing glance, and he curled up the corners of his mouth. This girl—if he really didn’t know English, she would’ve been exposed just now.
Gu Sui added: “Guan Yue is smart. She picks up everything quickly.”
Deng Baishu pouted. Who didn’t know Guan Yue was smart? Did it need to be said out loud to someone like him, a regular person?
Deng Weimin knocked on his son’s head and said: “If you know your brain is average, then work harder. Diligence makes up for lack of talent, you know?”
Deng Baishu snapped: “I don’t know! So, when you say that hard work can make up for lack of talent, are you implying that I’m stupid? Is being stupid my fault?”
Deng Weimin growled: “Hey, you little brat, you dare talk back after I’ve just given you a warning?”
Deng Weimin narrowed his eyes and stood up, looking ready to give his son a beating. Seeing the situation escalate, Deng Baishu quickly ran away.
He tossed the book onto the table as he ran, calling out: “I’m going to see Uncle.”
Deng Weimin grunted: “I’ll definitely give him a good beating one of these days!”
A little while later, Deng Weimin spoke to Guan Yue: “I’ve also looked over the books compiled by the medical school. Everyone’s really put in a lot of effort. Not to mention anything else, that book on traditional Chinese medicine pediatrics is quite valuable. It’ll definitely benefit a lot of people in the future.”
Guan Yue nodded: “Don’t worry. I told them I’d pay to support them, so they won’t back out halfway.”
Deng Weimin replied: “I know you won’t ignore it, but I still want to update you on the progress. At least make sure your money is well spent.”
Guan Yue felt it was worth it. Not only did they have real knowledge, but even if they were ordinary people, just by feeding them and taking care of them, they could save so many lives. That alone made the effort worthwhile.
As they were talking about the medical school, Xiao Ma came over to announce: “That foreigner is here.”
Gu Sui said: “Let’s go out and have a look.”
At the entrance of the valley, they were doing some registration. When Guan Yue and Gu Sui arrived, Professor John, who was paralyzed, had just been carried out of the car.
From a distance, it looked like he was paralyzed from the waist down.
Zhang Mingrui saw Guan Yue and greeted her with a smile: “Dr. Guan, we meet again.”
This Professor John had been invited by Zhang Mingrui through Dr. Robert. When he arrived, he brought two caregivers who didn’t speak Chinese, so Zhang Mingrui had hired a translator. Since he had nothing else to do, he decided to personally escort him here.
Dr. Robert had been wanting to meet Guan Yue for a while, so he came along as well.
Guan Yue walked over and said: “It’s been a few months, you’re looking well.”
Zhang Mingrui laughed heartily: “That’s all thanks to you.”
Robert’s eyes lit up when he saw Guan Yue, and he exclaimed: “This young lady is the miraculous doctor?”
Guan Yue looked at Robert, clearly not recognizing him.
Zhang Mingrui quickly introduced: “This is Dr. Robert. He’s treated me before, and when he learned that my heart disease was cured by you, he’s been wanting to meet you. He also helped with bringing Dr. John here.”
Guan Yue smiled and said: “Thank you, Dr. Robert.”
Robert was extremely excited: “It’s my honor to be of help.”
Professor John was being carried by two caregivers. It was clear that after the long journey, he was very weak.
Guan Yue greeted Professor John in fluent English. He nodded, showing no surprise that his future student could speak English.
After all, how could someone understand virology without knowing English? The cutting-edge research in this field was all written in English.
They had brought a lot of luggage, including items from Jiang Zhi and Cai Jin for Guan Yue, which filled two large boxes. With so much to check and the strict inspection process, they were only halfway through at this point. While they were waiting, Guan Yue took the opportunity to check Professor John’s pulse.
Robert quickly moved closer to observe how Guan Yue treated patients.
After taking the pulse, Guan Yue was about to write a prescription but noticed that Deng Baishu was nowhere to be found. The boy had run off to the medical school earlier.
Deng Weimin followed behind, saying: “There’s paper and a pen at the registration desk. You go ahead and write the prescription. I’ll go prepare the medicine in a bit.”
Guan Yue nodded.
While she was writing the prescription, Deng Weimin casually took Professor John’s pulse as well. The man was not only paralyzed but also in a very frail condition, likely struggling even to speak.
Once Guan Yue finished the prescription, she handed it to Deng Weimin.
Deng Weimin opened it and studied the prescription. Robert leaned in to take a look as well and, with his broken Chinese, asked Deng Weimin: “What’s written here?”
Robert’s Chinese was fine for everyday conversation, but he couldn’t read or write.
Deng Weimin glanced at him arrogantly and muttered under his breath: “Little curly hair, I told you, you wouldn’t understand.”
Deng Weimin spoke in his local dialect, and Robert, not understanding, frantically scratched his head.
Guan Yue explained to Professor John: “Once we reach the mountain, we’ll settle you in first. I’ll give you acupuncture. Afterward, you’ll eat, take your medicine, and rest. When you’re feeling better tomorrow, we can talk.”
Professor John nodded. Before coming here, he had learned about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and how it treated illnesses. Although he didn’t understand TCM at all, he was willing to give it a try.
After the inspection of their luggage, Wang Tiejun casually helped them up the mountain.
Professor John’s two caregivers followed behind, carrying him.
Deng Baishu ran up to Guan Yue: “I was gone for just a moment, and now there’s a patient.”
Guan Yue said: “Your father went to make the medicine. Go grab a box of silver needles.”
“I’m going now.”
Guan Yue and Gu Sui walked at the back, with Zhang Mingrui following beside them. “Can the professor’s illness be treated?”
Guan Yue nodded: “He hasn’t been paralyzed for long, and his care has been quite good. Although his body seems weak, his meridians aren’t in too bad a condition. If the recovery goes well, it’ll just be a matter of one or two months.”
Zhang Mingrui was amazed: “Dr. Guan, you’re incredible. You can treat any illness.”
“Everything’s connected. For those who know how, nothing’s difficult.”
As they reached the mountain, Deng Baishu caught up with the silver needles.
Once the patient was settled, Wang Tiejun and the others prepared to leave. “Dr. Guan, we’ll send your things to the cabin in a bit.”
“Alright, thank you.”
“No need for thanks, we’re all family here.”
Once everyone had left, Guan Yue instructed Professor John’s two caregivers: “Help him out of his clothes and lay them flat.”
The caregivers asked Professor John for his consent, and he nodded in agreement.
Guan Yue took the silver needles and began placing them on his body, starting from his waist, then moving to his thighs, and finally to his ankles.
The last needle was placed on his foot. The acupoints, connected by her abilities, triggered a response. Professor John’s lower body trembled uncontrollably, and his feet lifted slightly.
“Oh my God!” Robert exclaimed in surprise!
Before he arrived, he knew about traditional Chinese medicine and had looked into acupuncture. He couldn’t understand how such thin needles could have a healing effect. He had asked many traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, but no one could explain it clearly. Today was the first time he had seen acupuncture in action, and he hadn’t expected it to be such a miraculous skill.
Not only was Robert stunned, but Professor John and his two caretakers couldn’t believe what had just happened.
Tears welled up at the corner of Professor John’s eyes: “Was that just an illusion?”
Robert hurriedly responded: “No, it wasn’t. Your leg really moved just now.”
Robert looked at Guan Yue expectantly: “I really felt something in my leg just now. Can I get better?”
Guan Yue replied: “Of course, you can get better. If I couldn’t treat you, I would have told you to go back at the entrance of the valley.”
Professor John laughed: “Oh my God, I am so lucky!”
Deng Baishu whispered: “Shouldn’t we be calling out to the Buddha, Jade Emperor, and Queen Mother when we’re here? Can his God hear him from so far away?”
The translator couldn’t help but laugh out loud, as it did indeed seem like that.
Professor John asked the translator: “What are you laughing at?”
The translator, still laughing, said: “Dr. Guan’s assistant said that your God will bless you.”
Professor John smiled: “Thank God!”
Guan Yue smirked: “You should rest for now. I’ll come back in a bit.”
Professor John replied: “Thank you, Dr. Guan.”
Everyone left the room, and Professor John gazed out at the forest through the window. After a while, he slowly drifted off to sleep.
On his first day here, Guan Yue had already given Professor John a pleasant surprise, making him more confident in his recovery. After a few days, not only did his health improve, but his mood also got better and better.
A few days later, when Guan Yue went to give him acupuncture each day, he could joke with her, ask about her current studies, and inquire about why she wanted to study virology.
Professor John listened as Guan Yue talked about her future plans to research virology, mentioning that she already had a laboratory. He found it unbelievable that, in such a remote mountain area, a Chinese girl was genuinely interested in studying virology, rather than just dabbling in it casually.
Professor John thought about inviting Guan Yue to study abroad in the UK, but she rejected his offer.
With sincerity, Professor John said: “If you really want to learn the most cutting-edge knowledge, the UK or the US would be the best places for you. And here, even if you make significant discoveries, no one would know about them, which would be very disadvantageous to you.”
Guan Yue replied: “I’m studying virology not for fame; I simply want to research it.”
Professor John was unable to convince Guan Yue and had to put aside the idea of inviting her to study abroad for the time being.
In their daily conversations, Guan Yue often asked Professor John about academic concepts she hadn’t fully understood before, and Professor John always gave her excellent explanations. Some of his responses even triggered her thinking, and she started to connect these ideas to the manuscripts left by her father. Eventually, she began to understand some of the concepts better.
After several days, both were very satisfied with each other’s expertise. Guan Yue felt that the professor was competent, and Professor John believed that Guan Yue had the ability to cure him.
Once everything was on track here, Zhang Mingrui prepared to leave. Guan Yue thanked him for his help and also wanted to thank Cai Jin for the things he had sent her. She prepared a large gift for him, which included whitening pills for Cai Jin and health supplements like wellness pills, ideal for someone with a weak constitution.
She had prepared two sets of gifts—one for Cai Jin and another for her teacher, which she asked Zhang Mingrui to take back with him.
Guan Yue said: “I won’t say any more. This is my token of appreciation.”
Zhang Mingrui accepted the gift from Guan Yue, saying: “Then I’ll accept it without hesitation.”
Guan Yue made sure the gifts were exactly what he needed.
Zhang Mingrui asked: “By the way, I heard you’re only seeing five patients per year from now on. Is there still a chance this year? How are you going to select the candidates?”
Guan Yue replied: “It’s only halfway through the year, so I can’t say for sure. Maybe I’ll open up the slots in the second half of the year, or maybe I’ll have to wait until next year. You can contact Fang Lin about this. I’m not handling that.”
Zhang Mingrui nodded: “Then I’ll head off first. See you again soon.”
Guan Yue saw him off to the entrance of the valley, then turned to head back up to Xiaoqing Mountain.
