Chapter 87: Want to Kiss Him Again
Amid Aiger’s frustrated roar—“Stop right there! Get back here and explain yourself!”—Ji Laili quickened his pace without looking back.
So, in the end, he defected, huh?
He had originally planned to stand on the little butterfly’s side, act all cool and composed, and have a proper talk with Instructor Aiger.
But that plan was a complete failure.
Oh well, no big deal. He gained quite a lot from this anyway.
Finding out that the enemy wasn’t solely targeting Shen Yu made Ji Laili feel slightly relieved.
Then, he was immediately scared out of his wits by Shen Yu.
Over a hundred unread messages. Thirty missed calls.
Ji Laili was stunned. This… this was way too much.
The moment he stepped outside the interrogation room’s restricted area, it was like some sort of mechanism had been triggered—his star communicator wouldn’t stop buzzing, as if determined to fry his device completely.
Was something wrong? Did something happen?
Ji Laili didn’t hesitate. He immediately sent a communication request.
And almost the second he sent it, the other end picked up—so fast that it felt like Shen Yu had been sitting there, waiting, about to send another message but was intercepted at the last moment.
The call connected, and Ji Laili spoke urgently. “Are you okay?”
“Lailai, are you alright?”
Two different voices, yet the same concerned words, overlapped.
Both sides were momentarily stunned.
Ji Laili was the first to laugh. “You scared me to death. I thought something happened to you, that’s why you were so desperate to find me.”
A brief silence. Then, Shen Yu’s usually cold voice carried a trace of suppressed frustration.
“I should be the one saying that.”
“You…”
Shen Yu’s voice dropped even lower. “Where did you go? You didn’t reply to a single message.”
“Ji Laili, I was really worried about you. I couldn’t find you anywhere after you came back. I thought…”
Thought what?
Shen Yu didn’t finish his sentence. Before Ji Laili could ask, he moved on.
“Lailai, I miss you.”
“My susceptibility period is over, but… when you’re not here, I still think about you.”
For an Alpha as aloof and proud as Shen Yu, saying something like this was utterly embarrassing.
His words were slightly disjointed, his ears burning hot, the icy chill that had gripped his body earlier finally melting away.
He just really… wanted to tell the Alpha on the other end how he felt.
Shen Yu wasn’t even sure if he was just venting his unease or if the darker part of his heart was seizing this moment to stake a claim.
Even so, the normally cold and distant Alpha lowered his gaze, suppressing any trace of his gloominess, willing himself to ignore the heat spreading across his ears.
One word at a time, clearly and deliberately, he told Ji Laili—
“I don’t want you out of my sight.”
“If you don’t like that…”
Shen Yu paused briefly. “Then I won’t leave yours.”
Silence. No response from the other end.
Shen Yu pressed his lips together, trying to suppress the panic rising in his chest, forcing himself to stay calm.
“I won’t disturb you. You can keep talking and laughing with those Alphas. I’ll just…”
“…stand in the corner and watch like before?”
Ji Laili suddenly interrupted.
He seemed to chuckle, his laughter crisp against the wind, his tone light and teasing.
“Shen Yu, you’re so possessive.”
After he said that, there was no immediate response. Ji Laili let out a soft “eh?” in confusion.
Then, through the wind, he finally heard Shen Yu’s cool voice—serious, almost solemn.
“You don’t like it?”
“Then I’ll behave. However you want me to act, I’ll follow.”
“Of course not.”
Ji Laili unlocked the door with his fingerprint, turning the handle.
Inside, the moment someone heard the sound, they turned around with a cold expression.
The dim lighting cast eerie shadows over his pale, sharp features, his dark eyes carrying a chilling aura.
In the elongated shadows behind him, for a fleeting moment, Ji Laili thought he saw a beautiful yet ominous serpent, coiling in the damp darkness.
As the door fully opened, Ji Laili caught the flash of red creeping into Shen Yu’s pale irises.
He was frozen in place, staring at Ji Laili, unmoving.
What serpent?
This guy would only end up poisoning himself.
Ji Laili’s lips curled into a smile. Seeing the person standing right in front of him, he casually lifted his right hand, still holding the communicator, and said—
“But, possessive Shen-xuezhang, I don’t hate it at all.”
He blinked, as if he hadn’t just said something that could easily shake someone to their core, his dazzling smile bright and unrestrained.
Shen Yu… really was utterly defeated by him.
Just when he thought he had developed some resistance to Ji Laili, this guy managed to effortlessly break through his defenses again.
He wanted to kiss him.
Shen Yu stared at him, and suddenly, he just really, really wanted to kiss him again.
Meanwhile, Ji Laili continued rambling on about the Empire’s schemes.
Shen Yu didn’t hear a single word.
His gaze was fixed solely on Ji Laili’s lips.
With an Alpha’s excellent healing ability, such a small wound had long since disappeared without a trace.
Shen Yu could hardly even find the mark he had left there yesterday.
The aloof, untouchable “Flower on the High Peak”[1]“Flower on the High Peak” (高岭之花, gāo lǐng zhī huā) is a Chinese idiom used to describe someone who is beautiful, elegant, or highly desirable but seems distant, unattainable, … Continue reading furrowed his brows, just slightly—It faded too fast.
“So that’s how things are. Xuezhang, you don’t need to worry too much.”
“…Worried about what?”
Ji Laili was met with Shen Yu’s bewildered gaze. He blinked. “You didn’t hear anything, did you?”
Shen Yu paused, a rare trace of guilt flickering across his face.
His jaw tensed, and his already cool voice turned even colder as he spoke rigidly, “I heard.”
Alright, got it—you didn’t hear a thing.
Just look at that guilty reaction.
Ji Laili deliberately stayed silent, staring at Shen Yu for a long time. Under his intense gaze, Shen Yu turned his head away uncomfortably, exposing his reddened ears.
Ji Laili smiled, dragging out a long “Oh~,” his expression saying loud and clear: Lying is bad. I’ll let it slide this time, but don’t do it again.
Shen Yu, with his cold expression, thought to himself—he wanted to kiss him even more now.
Oblivious to this, Ji Laili chuckled. “Then I’ll say it again.” Completely unaware of the thoughts running through Shen Yu’s mind, he opened his mouth and started talking non-stop about serious matters.
Analyzing the actions of the Imperial agents, he was focused on uncovering the infiltrator hidden within the military academy—fully immersed in his mission.
This time, Shen Yu forced himself to listen, at least getting the gist of it—mostly because he didn’t want Ji Laili to have to repeat himself again. He didn’t want him to get tired.
In the end, he extracted the most critical piece of information:
Laili had noticed the things he had done—but assumed they were the work of the Imperial spy hidden in the academy.
As for whether there really was an Imperial spy lurking here, Shen Yu wasn’t certain.
In his past life, at this exact moment, he had been on the run, evading pursuit from both factions. He had no idea what had happened at the Federation’s military academy.
However, the sudden appearance of Imperial agents at this time was, in a way, actually helping him.
Shen Yu glanced at Ji Laili, who remained completely unaware.
His gaze deepened, and a hint of amusement flickered in his eyes.
