Chapter 103.1
Gu Qinghan rubbed Wen Nuan’s head and kissed her before leaving the house.
Wen Nuan glanced at her watch. Gu Qinghan had been at home for half an hour, and she guessed that things were starting to take shape. It wouldn’t be long before the truth would come out.
With this thought, Wen Nuan felt that Aunt Lin’s issue didn’t seem so disgusting anymore.
As soon as Gu Qinghan left, Aunt Chen returned home with Lele.
Aunt Chen walked in and said, “I just heard that Aunt Lin came back to the family compound. As soon as she got back, she had a quarrel with her son, Colonel Lin. I think Aunt Lin will come over here to apologize to you in a while.”
It was well known that Aunt Lin had caused trouble when she came over today. Everyone knew it was her carelessness that had caused the entire family to be poisoned, and now she still had the audacity to come over here and make a scene. When Colonel Lin came home, many people went to his house and told him about the situation.
Aunt Lin must have been severely scolded by Lin Guoqiang. Wen Nuan figured that she would come over soon to apologize.
Wen Nuan remembered the words Gu Qinghan had said before leaving and frowned. She spoke to Aunt Chen, saying, “Aunt Chen, if Aunt Lin comes over later, tell her I’ve already gone to bed and ask her to go home.”
As long as the child was fine, everything else could be dealt with. The worst thing would be if the child truly got sick from eating something wrong.
From what Gu Qinghan had implied, it seemed like there would be some action tonight. Gu Qinghan had told her not to go running around, probably to prevent accidentally letting the enemy escape while capturing spies, or worse, injuring people from the family compound.
Aunt Lin couldn’t stay too late, so it was best to have her leave early.
As for the apology, it could wait until the spies were captured.
Aunt Chen, while washing Lele’s hands, said, “Alright, I know what to say. Aunt Lin is just a bully. She probably thought you were easy to deal with, so she came over to cause trouble. We can’t let her off so easily.”
“Everyone says that Aunt Lin must have known the mushrooms she cooked were bad, which caused the whole family to get sick. She probably came over here to blame us, claiming our cookies were the problem, just so she could make us the scapegoats. Her heart is really dark!”
Aunt Chen often picked Lele up from school, so she had dealt with Aunt Lin many times before.
She had never liked how Aunt Lin always snatched Lele’s snacks. Half of the treats she brought for Lele always ended up in Aunt Lin’s pocket.
To her surprise, today, Aunt Lin was using the snacks issue to accuse them of having unclean food!
Aunt Chen couldn’t swallow this insult. Since Wen Nuan had said not to meet Aunt Lin tonight, it saved her from having to see Aunt Lin’s hypocritical face again.
After washing his hands, Lele ran over to Wen Nuan and said, “Mom, I’m not tired yet. I don’t want to sleep.”
“Alright, you can come with Mom to the room and draw,” Wen Nuan said, stroking her child’s head. She then asked Aunt Chen to lock the door.
Tonight, Gu Qinghan was going to lead an operation. Although it wasn’t certain that the enemy spies would escape, her husband had said that there were more than one spy involved. If there were still others within the troops, she wasn’t sure if they might take any drastic actions.
For the past few days, she had been on edge. She had finally made it to the weekend, and now she didn’t want to send the child to kindergarten anymore.
Wen Nuan looked at Lele, who had entered the room and started drawing, feeling a little calmer. She hoped that the military would restore peace as soon as possible.
Since it wasn’t time to turn off the lights yet, Aunt Chen was in the living room, organizing baby clothes, planning to wash and air them out again tomorrow when the sun came up.
Just as Aunt Chen was about to go back to her room to sleep, a knock came at the door, followed by Aunt Lin’s voice outside.
“Lele’s mom—”
“Lele’s mom, are you asleep?”
Aunt Chen decisively opened the living room door, then walked to the yard’s gate, looking at Aunt Lin and saying, “Comrade Lin, please go back. Xiao Nuan has already gone to sleep.”
Seeing that it wasn’t Wen Nuan who had come out, Aunt Lin peered inside. But the lights were still on in the room. She frowned. “She’s already asleep this early? Aunt Chen, today’s incident was a misunderstanding on my part…”
Aunt Chen raised a sarcastic smile, directly interrupting Aunt Lin. “Our Xiao Nuan is about to give birth. She’s been going to bed early lately, especially today, when she was so upset that she couldn’t even eat much dinner. She’s been feeling dizzy and went to bed early.”
Since Aunt Lin had come over to bother them today, Aunt Chen decided to give this shameless woman a taste of her own medicine.
Sure enough, after hearing Aunt Chen’s words, Aunt Lin’s face turned pale, and she stood there in a daze for a long time before finally responding, “Is… Is Lele’s mom okay?”
If something had happened to Wen Nuan because of this incident, Aunt Lin knew she would be implicated.
But she also felt anxious because she hadn’t seen Wen Nuan all day. Just now, her son had scolded her harshly, telling her to go apologize immediately. After hesitating for a while, she had decided to come.
However, she definitely didn’t believe Aunt Chen’s words. Seeing the look of disgust on Aunt Chen’s face, she knew she was lying.
It was clear that Aunt Chen didn’t want her to see Wen Nuan, likely out of revenge for causing trouble earlier today.
Aunt Chen sneered, “If it were your own son who was falsely accused and slandered, you’d probably have already gotten into a fight. Our Xiao Nuan is pregnant with two children, and she’s in the later stages of pregnancy. It’s already amazing she hasn’t gone into premature labor because of your harassment! If you had any conscience, you wouldn’t be causing a scene in front of our house. Do you really want to make her go into labor from the stress?”
Aunt Chen looked at Aunt Lin’s displeased expression and knew that she hadn’t truly come to apologize. She had probably been forced to come by her son and daughter-in-law.
No wonder Wen Nuan had said she didn’t want to see her from the beginning. She must have already anticipated that Aunt Lin would show her true colors.
“You’re impossible! Stop being so unreasonable!” Aunt Lin, seeing Aunt Chen’s aggressive attitude, became upset. Wen Nuan certainly didn’t look like someone who would go into premature labor because of her today!
Besides, who didn’t know that twins were more prone to premature birth?
If it really happened, it wasn’t her fault!
Aunt Chen shot her a glance and sneered, “It’s late. Don’t shout in front of someone’s house. Don’t make me lose my patience.”
She wasn’t as patient as Wen Nuan. If it weren’t for Lu Family’s reputation, she would have already chased this woman away with a broom!
Aunt Lin, feeling humiliated, became increasingly aggrieved. She had come here to apologize, yet Aunt Chen’s attitude was what? Was she trying to make things difficult for her?
Finally, she gritted her teeth and said, “Fine, I can’t argue with you. I came to apologize to Lele’s mom. Since she’s asleep, just tell her I came.”
After all, Wen Nuan was younger, and by age and seniority, Aunt Lin could practically be her mother. Coming here to apologize had already given her face, and now she was being turned away?!
“Ha!” Aunt Chen listened to Aunt Lin’s words and sneered, “I’m getting old and forgetful. By tomorrow, I won’t remember anything. You should just come back tomorrow and tell her yourself.”
With that, Aunt Chen turned and walked back into the house, slamming the door loudly behind her.
Making someone else deliver an apology was a sign of insincerity!
Aunt Lin was furious and stomped away. Seeing the bright lights from Wen Nuan’s house shining through the window, she knew they were doing this on purpose!
But since they refused to meet with her, she had no choice but to leave in frustration.
Once Aunt Lin was gone, Aunt Chen went into Wen Nuan’s room and repeated what Aunt Lin had said.
Although Wen Nuan’s room wasn’t close to the yard, Aunt Chen had opened the living room door earlier, so she had heard everything clearly.
Since Aunt Lin wasn’t truly sincere about the apology, it really wasn’t necessary to see her again.
“Aunt Chen, don’t bother with her anymore. Otherwise, she’ll just say you’re being unreasonable again. It’s best not to interact with her during this time,” Wen Nuan said, while coloring with Lele using crayons. She then added, “By the way, Aunt Chen, you should go to bed early tonight. If there’s any movement outside, don’t go out to check. Qinghan mentioned there’s a mission.”
Aunt Chen had also lived with Uncle Zhao in the army for a while, so she naturally understood Wen Nuan’s words. She nodded, “Then you should go to bed early too. If you like, I can take Lele to bed tonight?”
Lele always slept with Wen Nuan, and the big room’s kang could fit several people, so there was enough space.
However, Lele was a bit rough when she slept and tended to squirm around. With Wen Nuan nearing the end of her pregnancy, Aunt Chen worried that Lele might accidentally hurt her.
Wen Nuan replied, “No need, I’ll sleep with Lele tonight.”
Aunt Chen couldn’t convince Wen Nuan, so she left the big room, double-checked the door lock, and then went to bed.
