Chapter 124: A Leisurely Life
Before heading back, Shen Yiyi went to find Qian Xiaoling and told her that Jiang Wanrou had found out it was she who had reported her.
At the time of their deal, besides the two of them, there had also been Chen Yulan. It was not hard to figure out that it must have been Chen Yulan who told Jiang Wanrou.
Qian Xiaoling was utterly shocked, never expecting that Chen Yulan would betray her.
As for how to deal with Chen Yulan, Qian Xiaoling knew exactly what to do.
Shen Yiyi and Li Chen returned home.
The next day marked Li Chen’s first official day at work. Normally, work started at eight o’clock, but during the training period, it began at nine.
Shen Yiyi did not laze in bed. Just like when he went to work before, she got up with him, made breakfast, and ate with him. After he left, she read for a while. When the Three Baos woke up, she played with them for a bit before teaching Da Bao and Er Bao how to recognize words.
Er Bao could never sit still. Before long, he took off running outside to play. After finishing the lessons his mother had assigned him, Da Bao would sometimes go out with Er Bao, balancing study and play.
As for Xiao Bao, he stayed at home with Shen Yiyi.
Shen Yiyi was someone who could stay indoors for long periods. If nothing required her to go out, she could stay home for a whole month without stepping outside.
Mother Li visited frequently, though mainly to see her precious grandchildren.
Additionally, she would share village gossip with Shen Yiyi. For example, Jiang Wanrou and Lin Jiadong’s secret romance had been exposed!
From Mother Li’s words, Shen Yiyi pieced together the cause and effect and could roughly guess what had happened—
After her previous conversation with them, Jiang Wanrou and Lin Jiadong had a falling out. With no job left, Jiang Wanrou had no choice but to return to the village.
The Jiang sisters had lost their parents early on, so the family had not been divided. The house they lived in had been built by their grandfather.
After Jiang Ailing got married and Jiang Wanrou went to the city to work as a temporary laborer, her uncle had moved his son and daughter-in-law into the house where the sisters originally lived.
He had said that they would move out once Jiang Wanrou returned. However, after Jiang Wanrou lost her job, his attitude changed. He told Jiang Wanrou to go live with her cousin instead.
Jiang Wanrou’s cousin had always been jealous of her beauty and had never liked her. Because of this, they often clashed.
Jiang Wanrou endured time and again, but in the end, her cousin provoked her to the point of losing her temper. The two nearly got into a fight.
This made her aunt, who had never liked her in the first place, even more displeased. Her words became sharp and sarcastic, filled with mockery.
Jiang Wanrou’s days grew increasingly difficult, so she ran to Lin Jiadong to complain.
Lin Jiadong still held resentment toward her for deceiving him, but Jiang Wanrou took the initiative to coax him. Lin Jiadong, blinded by her beauty and emotions stirred, fell for her again. The two embraced and kissed passionately.
Unexpectedly, they were seen by someone. Forced into admitting their relationship, they had no choice but to acknowledge they were courting.
When Jiang Ailing found out, she was nearly furious to death. She did not want Jiang Wanrou to marry Lin Jiadong, but there was nothing she could do. After all, they had been caught in broad daylight engaging in such an indecent act. If Jiang Wanrou did not marry Lin Jiadong, no one else would be willing to take her.
Because of this, Jiang Ailing was full of disdain for Lin Jiadong, treating him with a sour attitude.
Lin Jiadong, however, was truly fond of Jiang Wanrou. He took the initiative to propose marriage and had a conversation with Jiang Ailing behind closed doors.
When he came out, Jiang Ailing was all smiles, agreeing to the marriage between Jiang Wanrou and Lin Jiadong.
It was Wang Yan who somehow got hold of inside information. She said that Jiang Ailing had told Lin Jiadong that if he wanted to marry her sister, he would have to build a house in the village—and she specifically requested that it be built next to Old Li’s Family.
As for what she was scheming, there was no need to guess—
On the surface, it seemed to be for her sister’s sake. After all, once married, it would indeed be inconvenient for the couple to continue living in the shared dormitory for educated youths.
In reality, however, she wanted Lin Jiadong to build an extra room so that her own family could have a share. After all, with six people squeezed into a single house, they were practically suffocating.
If the house was built next door, they could easily move in.
Originally, Lin Jiadong had planned to build just one house after marrying Jiang Wanrou.
Now, with this arrangement, he had no choice but to construct an additional room. He went to the Brigade Leader to apply for the residential plot. No one knew what kind of bribe he offered, but surprisingly, the approval was granted.
Now, everything was ready—only the arrival of spring was awaited!
Shen Yiyi: “……”
In the book, not only did Jiang Wanrou never lose her job, but she even became a leader at the textile factory.
Moreover, before the college entrance exams, Jiang Ailing had firmly opposed Jiang Wanrou and Lin Jiadong being together.
When their secret relationship was discovered, Jiang Ailing forcibly separated them.
Of course, they only appeared to be apart on the surface. In reality, they continued seeing each other in secret.
It was not until Lin Jiadong was accepted into Peking University after the exams that Jiang Ailing changed her attitude completely.
A development path entirely different from this lifetime…
Shen Yiyi pondered over it for a moment before putting it out of her mind. She had no interest in Lin Jiadong and Jiang Wanrou’s complicated love story.
There was, however, another matter worth mentioning—the village chief had fallen ill after the New Year.
With spring plowing about to begin, in order to prevent Brigade Leader He Hairong from seizing power, Father Li was appointed as the acting village chief in a time of crisis.
Of course, this had no impact on Shen Yiyi’s life whatsoever.
She still ate and drank as usual. Her daily routine consisted of reading, teaching Da Bao and Er Bao to recognize words, and taking care of Xiao Bao. When she was bored, she would make delicious food and wait for Li Chen to return home and enjoy it.
Today, with nothing else to do, she made some fried pumpkin cakes. Sweet, fragrant, and crispy, they were incredibly delicious. Even Langya, after eating one, still wanted more, staring at her with its tongue out and eyes full of longing.
Shen Yiyi fed it another one. But when it begged for more, she refused.
Fried pumpkin cakes were too heat-inducing—eating too many would not be good.
Langya did not make a fuss. After more than a month of living together, it had completely come to trust Shen Yiyi’s family.
Shen Yiyi took meticulous care of Langya, feeding it almost the same food they ate.
Of course, this did not make Langya lazy.
Li Chen had somehow learned some training techniques. Whenever he came home early from work or had a day off, he would take time to train Langya.
During these sessions, Langya seemed to return to the battlefield it was once familiar with, becoming incredibly excited. It even appeared to understand its duty. For example, now that it was certain its master would not give it any more food, it ran outside to the main hall and crouched down, keeping a vigilant watch over its surroundings. It truly looked like it was standing guard, carrying out its duty with unwavering dedication.
Seeing how obedient it was, Shen Yiyi went inside and brought out a bone for it.
Langya was overjoyed. Perhaps because it had no sense of smell, it particularly enjoyed experiencing flavors through taste and ate very slowly.
Whenever it encountered a flavor it liked, its tail would wag vigorously behind it.
The contrast between its fierce appearance and this adorable behavior was striking—just like how Li Chen acted in front of her. Somehow, Shen Yiyi found it irresistibly endearing and could not help but give Langya another piece of food.
Just then, Mother Li arrived. She clutched her chest in distress at the sight, her heart aching. She wanted to scold Shen Yiyi, but instead, she subconsciously asked in a questioning tone: “Second Daughter-in-law, does the dog really need to eat this well?” Even humans did not eat this well!
Without even looking up, Shen Yiyi replied: “Mother, this is a retired military dog.”
“Isn’t it still just a dog?” Mother Li muttered. She was a typical countryside woman with a small-farmer mindset. Having little education and limited exposure to the outside world, she understood the role of military dogs but did not think it had anything to do with her.
Hearing this, Shen Yiyi finally looked up and saw Mother Li’s pained expression. She said: “…Mother, retired military dogs receive a pension.”
