Chapter 128: Your Whole Family Are Gossips  

Just as the commotion was reaching its peak, Father Li, the acting village chief, arrived. Jiang Wanrou, as if seeing her savior, hurriedly recounted the entire incident and then tearfully complained: “…Father-in-law, my fiancé was only acting heroically. Why is she holding onto him like that? What exactly is she trying to do?”  

Jiang Wanrou had seen through Chen Jiayi’s tricks. Every word she spoke carried an underlying accusation against Chen Jiayi.  

However, Lin Jiadong believed that Chen Jiayi had done nothing wrong. Instead, it was the villagers who were at fault. He explained: “Uncle Li, I was truly saving her, and there was no other intention. But now, the villagers are saying I have ruined Comrade Chen’s reputation. Not only is this an injustice to me, but how is she supposed to continue living in the village after this?”  

Father Li immediately took charge of the situation and addressed the crowd. “Fellow villagers, this was simply an act of bravery. His actions deserve our praise and admiration…”  

He went on and on, making it clear that Lin Jiadong had done nothing wrong, nor had Chen Jiayi. It was purely a heroic act. Besides, Lin Jiadong already had a fiancée, while Chen Jiayi was an unmarried young woman. There was no need to spread rumors about them.  

Since Father Li carried the title of “acting village chief.” his words carried weight. With him having spoken, the villagers, who had been eagerly watching the spectacle, naturally had nothing more to say and soon dispersed.  

Father Li then reassured Chen Jiayi before instructing Jiang Wanrou to escort her back to the educated youth station.  

What Chen Jiayi had been clinging onto was the idea that “the villagers believed her reputation had been ruined.” Now that Father Li had resolved the issue on her behalf, she could no longer insist on the matter in front of Lin Jiadong. Reluctantly, she let go of Lin Jiadong and, at least on the surface, agreed to let Jiang Wanrou take her back.  

Although Jiang Wanrou found Chen Jiayi utterly disgusting, she still maintained an outward appearance of concern.  

Lin Jiadong, also being an educated youth, needed to return to the educated youth station as well. Thus, the three of them left together.  

Now that the excitement was over, Shen Yiyi naturally took Xiao Bao home. Wang Yan, looking disappointed, caught up with her and sighed: “I thought we were in for a great show, but it ended just like that. Ugh, your father-in-law showed up at the worst possible moment!”  

“Don’t worry, this matter isn’t over yet.” Shen Yiyi remarked.  

“Oh? How so?” Wang Yan’s face lit up with curiosity.

“You’re not known as the biggest gossip in Qingshui Village? And yet you can’t even make sense of this?” Shen Yiyi looked at her with a smirk.  

“Who’s a gossip?!” Wang Yan widened her eyes, but when she saw Shen Yiyi glance at her sideways, she immediately backed down. Hmph, she’d let it slide this time—for the sake of those two pieces of candy!  

But her curiosity got the better of her. “How is this not over yet?”  

Of course, it wasn’t over—because Chen Jiayi hadn’t gotten what she wanted yet.  

However, this wasn’t something she could tell Wang Yan. If she did, Wang Yan would definitely go around spreading it, which would only ruin Chen Jiayi’s plans.  

Shen Yiyi had no intention of helping anyone. She would just let them fight among themselves.  

So, she teased: “You’ll find out in a few days.”  

That only made Wang Yan even more impatient. She pleaded: “Come on, tell me! We’re so close. I promise I won’t say a word!”  

As if she’d believe that…

Shen Yiyi snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Wang Yan in shock. “Since when were we close?”  

“Aren’t we?” Wang Yan blinked. “Last time your mother-in-law came over, you gave me two extra pieces of candy!”  

Shen Yiyi: “…” Two pieces of candy? That was all it took to win you over?  

“Hmm, you’re right.” Shen Yiyi said solemnly.  

Just then, they reached a small fork in the road. Her home and He family’s house were in different directions, so she seized the chance to take Xiao Bao and leave.  

“…” Wang Yan watched Shen Yiyi’s retreating figure and spat in frustration. “Not telling me just to act all clever, huh? Pfft! You’re the gossip! Your whole family are gossips!”
