Chapter 48: Emergency Relief (Part 5)
After feeding the glucose tablet, Zhao Xiulan gave Uncle Chen some water. Auntie Chen had already fetched the hot water by then.
Zhao Xiulan pretended to accept the water Auntie Chen brought and helped Uncle Chen wipe his forehead.
Then the two of them anxiously watched over Uncle Chen, with Auntie Chen’s face full of worry, afraid that something might happen to him.
At their age, being dependent on each other, the worst fear was losing one and being left alone.
Seeing Auntie Chen’s worried look, Zhao Xiulan comforted her, “Auntie Chen, don’t worry too much. Uncle Chen just fainted from hunger. It shouldn’t be anything serious.”
Auntie Chen sighed, unable to relax until Uncle Chen woke up. She kept worrying.
Thanks to the glucose tablet, after ten minutes, Uncle Chen gradually woke up.
Seeing Uncle Chen awake, Auntie Chen hurried over, her face full of joy as she exclaimed, “Great, you’re okay now, old man!”
Uncle Chen stared at Auntie Chen for a moment, then opened his mouth, feeling a hint of sweetness lingering? Was he hallucinating because of hunger?
Uncle Chen didn’t think much about it at the moment. Instead, he asked Auntie Chen, “What happened to me?”
“Old man, you fainted from hunger. You scared me to death,” Auntie Chen said, relieved. “But it’s okay now. I managed to get some food today. I’ll make you something to eat later. You mustn’t faint from hunger again. I was so scared when you passed out earlier.”
After saying this, Auntie Chen wiped away the tears in her eyes.
Thinking about their past prosperity and their current impoverished life, Zhao Xiulan felt even more sympathetic.
Life has its ups and downs, and those with a poor mentality might find it hard to endure.
Pretending to take out a meat bun from her pocket, which she actually retrieved from her space, Zhao Xiulan handed it to Auntie Chen.
“Auntie Chen, it takes too long to cook now. I have another meat bun here. Give it to Uncle Chen to eat.”
Seeing the meat bun Zhao Xiulan handed over, Auntie Chen immediately shook her head and refused, “Xiulan, how can this be? I already ate one of your buns. I can’t take another one. I appreciate your kindness, but I’ll leave this meat bun for you to eat!”
Auntie Chen knew how precious meat buns were nowadays, and she didn’t like taking advantage of others. How could she accept another one?
But Zhao Xiulan insisted and pushed the meat bun into Auntie Chen’s hands, saying, “Auntie Chen, Uncle Chen needs something to eat right now. Give it to him quickly! Don’t be polite with me. Compared to the jewellery you gave me, two buns are nothing. Keep this meat bun for yourself and don’t refuse me.”
Auntie Chen glanced at Zhao Xiulan, then at Uncle Chen, her eyes misty with tears. Then she gratefully said to Zhao Xiulan, “Xiulan, thank you so much. I’ll always remember your kindness. Today, you saved both of us…”
If it weren’t for Zhao Xiulan, she would have fainted outside already. And with Uncle Chen’s current condition, she really didn’t know what to do.
So in Auntie Chen’s eyes, Zhao Xiulan had saved their lives.
“Auntie Chen, let’s not talk about this now. Let Uncle Chen eat something quickly,” Zhao Xiulan said.
“Yes!” Auntie Chen wiped away the tears in her eyes and agreed, urging Uncle Chen to eat.
“Old man, here’s a meat bun. Eat it to fill your stomach and don’t faint from hunger again.”
