Chapter 5 – Getting the Household Register

In this era, the things most people cared about the most were the very things Bai Wei didn’t care about at all. So she didn’t think too long.

She simply nodded in agreement.

As soon as Bai Wei nodded, Lu Siting silently breathed a sigh of relief.

His grandfather’s situation couldn’t be delayed any longer, so finding someone to marry had become a matter of urgency.

But Lu Siting was a soldier—he would never hide family matters from his partner.

Fortunately, he met Bai Wei.

She was beautiful, looked gentle, and had her own opinions.

Even if she couldn’t cook or do housework, it didn’t matter—he could do those things anyway.

Bai Wei, in a moment of impulsiveness, asked: “Mr. Lu, since your family is in a hurry, how about… we get married today?”

She already knew Lu Siting’s situation. Now that both of them had agreed and were ready to get married, naturally, the sooner the better.

But still… why did it sound a little strange?

The corners of Lu Siting’s lips lifted slightly, showing the first smile since they met today.

“Alright.”

Getting married was originally something he should’ve brought up, but unexpectedly, in the end, it was Bai Wei who proposed it.

His smile faded quickly, and Lu Siting stood up to go pay the bill.

To get married, they needed their household register books. The two agreed to go back to their respective homes to get them and meet an hour later at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau.

When Bai Wei got home, she went straight to Shen Juan and said: “Mom, where’s my household register? Help me find it.”

All the important items at home were in Shen Juan’s room, including the household register. Bai Wei already knew where it was, but still asked Shen Juan to fetch it.

“What do you need the household register for?”

Shen Juan found it and handed it over, puzzled.

Bai Wei took it with a bright smile and said: “Of course, to get married! Mom, turns out the matchmaker was pretty reliable this time. She wasn’t lying—my blind date is good-looking, tall, educated, and has a great job.”

Married?!

Her daughter had gone on so many blind dates before, and none of them worked out. But now she suddenly succeeded after just one and was already talking about marriage?

If she remembered correctly, today was their first time meeting over a meal, wasn’t it?

Shen Juan was completely dumbfounded. She was so stunned, she couldn’t even speak.

Seeing Bai Wei about to leave, Shen Juan snapped out of it and rushed to grab her arm, trying to persuade her: “Sweetheart, even if I pushed you before, I just wanted you to meet people first. You should get to know each other better. What’s the rush?”

“So many people go on blind dates, but who gets married the same day? Sweetheart, are you sick? Are you thinking straight? Marriage is a big deal—you can’t just rush into it like this.”

As she spoke, she reached out to feel Bai Wei’s forehead.

Her daughter suddenly wanting to get married—could it be a fever? Was she delirious? Otherwise, she truly couldn’t understand why Bai Wei would suddenly ask for the household register to get married.

She must’ve burned her brain.

Shen Juan held on to Bai Wei and said: “Weiwei, if you’re feeling unwell, just tell me. I’ll take you to see a doctor.”

Bai Wei was torn between laughing and crying.

But she also knew Shen Juan was just worried for her.

“Mom, don’t worry. I’m not sick.”

Bai Wei reassured her: “The man I’m marrying—his name is Lu Siting—he’s a really good person. And he’s super handsome. I’m really satisfied with him. If I can’t even hold on to someone as handsome as Lu Siting, then honestly, I might never be interested in any other man.”

“Besides, he’s a soldier. Think about it, Mom—how great is that? Soldiers have good character. And just think, if others find out your son-in-law is a soldier, wouldn’t that be something to be proud of?”

Bai Wei went on and on, while Shen Juan stood there dumbfounded, just listening.

The household register in her hand slowly made its way into Bai Wei’s hands.

Suppressing her inner excitement, Bai Wei smiled and said: “Mom, I’m heading out. When Dad comes back, don’t forget to tell him.”

Before Shen Juan could react, the front door slammed shut, leaving her alone in the room.

She felt dizzy, as if her head was spinning.
“Could it be that I pushed her too hard, and now she’s just randomly marrying someone?”
