Another day in the office.

The rough design of the memorial monument has been completed, and from here on, it’s up to the specialists to finalize the finer details of the patterns.

My part in the project is done.

I did ask Fiora for a little help, and I’m sure it’ll turn out great.

Now then, the work I’d been pouring myself into lately has finally settled down, so I thought I could just spend the rest of the day lazing around as usual… but of course, that’s not happening.

I didn’t have anything scheduled for today, but during lunch, the branch chief of the Adventurer Guild asked me for a job.

“Vice-Captain Sera, if you please.”

Just as I heard a voice from the hallway, the door opened.

It was a soldier stationed to guard the room.

“Sure thing~”

Replying to him, I got down from the sofa and glided over to him on my 【Floating Orb】, but as I passed by Seriana’s desk, she called out to stop me.

On her desk was a pile of documents—petitions and approvals relating to the coming winter—and she had been busy processing them. Now, she paused and looked at me.

Did something happen?

“You’re going to inspect the outer perimeter of the city, right?”

“Yeah. They’ve started digging, so I need to check if it’s affecting the wall in any way.”

Since finishing the underground investigation, excavation work had begun in the church district.

It turned out to be much more extensive than initially anticipated, and completing it would take quite some time.

We had a rough grasp of where the underground facility was located, so theoretically we could just dig in those specific spots. But the layout was like… well, maybe not quite like an ant’s nest, but a dense web, especially from the well to the orphanage in the church district.

So rather than painstakingly digging just the passageways, we decided it would be more efficient to dig out the entire area in one go… which meant excavating nearly half the church district.

Given the scale of the operation, we obviously had to be cautious not only about time but also how it might affect the surrounding ground.

Which brings me to the job I was asked to do today.

It’s an inspection of the city wall, accompanied by specialists and members of the 2nd Unit serving as guards, along with adventurers.

Originally, we only intended to monitor the outer side of the wall adjacent to the church district, but we decided we might as well inspect the whole perimeter.

I’m not doing the inspecting myself, of course—I’m tagging along more as a coordinator or observer.

The 2nd Unit and the adventurers work well together, but the specialists apparently belong to the 1st Unit.

It’s not like I expect them to clash or anything, but their work attitudes and approaches do differ a bit, so I was probably asked to help ease any friction.

With me there, nothing’s likely to escalate anyway.

Well… it’s not a bad gig. I just have to float behind the inspection team.

Seriana probably already heard about this, so it’s not like she needed to confirm it now, but…

“Is there anywhere else you think I should check while I’m out?”

“If you’ve got time, check the eastern river from above, please.”

The eastern river, huh…

Wasn’t that connected to the well’s water source?

If something from outside the city were to affect us, the riverbank along the east would be the most likely point. It makes sense to inspect that as well.

Since I’ll be circling the city anyway, I’ll pass through the east side, so I’ll handle that too.

“Got it. I’ll check it while I’m at it.”

“Good. Take care.”

With that, the conversation ended. Seriana returned to her work, and I headed toward the soldier waiting outside.

We began the inspection of the city wall from the section adjacent to the church district.

The specialists were sticking rod-like tools into the ground in front of the wall to investigate something.

It seemed like some sort of surveying work.

As expected of someone from the 1st Unit—they worked quietly and skillfully, clearly experienced.

“Is this just for today?”

The work was happening just beyond the wall. If it’s going to have any impact, it’d likely be something like ground subsidence, right?

But it’s still early in the process. I doubt anything’s going to happen just yet.

Still, I’d only heard about today’s plan.

Sure, we patrol the city’s perimeter every day as part of routine security, but this large-scale operation in front of me… well, that’s another story.

“No, they said it’ll be done regularly to match the pace of progress on the other side. Can’t say for sure if it’ll be exactly the same work every time, though.”

It was one of the 2nd Unit members who answered.

Apparently, Teresa and the others had already briefed them, and they were kind enough to fill me in.

“I see…”

So the work won’t be done in a single day—they’re planning to spread it out over time.

Well, yeah. That makes sense.

I suppose today’s joint operation is also intended to help everyone understand each other’s tasks.

As long as we know what kind of work each party is doing, we can avoid unnecessary conflicts later.

In that case, I should take this opportunity to do what only I can do.

I raised the altitude of my 【Floating Orb】 in one go to scan the surroundings.

Reaching a height of about 30 meters, I looked around…

“Hmm… looks like there’s nothing out of the ordinary either way?”

The adventurers had already resumed their hunting activities. If anything problematic occurred, it wouldn’t go unnoticed.

Looking down, I saw the tools being packed away—it seemed the inspection here was complete.

Time to move on to the next location!
