Gentle Training for the Wild Chapter 47 – END

Chapter 47

Fu Cheng encountered a violent incident near the base.

There were children present, which was why he intervened.

At his core, he was still a soldier. When the lives of the people were threatened, he would always step forward.

At that time, he was alone, so he didn’t resist head-on. After reaching the base, others arrived, then went to the police station, and finally came to the hospital.

By the time he got to the hospital, his phone was already dead.

It was early morning, and he didn’t expect Youyi to come looking for him here.

There was a lot of blood on him, but it wasn’t his.

“My foot got hit and I had a minor injury. The doctor exaggerated, saying I had to sit in a wheelchair until fractures were ruled out.”

With this brief explanation, Fu Cheng wiped her tears and gently comforted her, “Stop crying.”

Hearing that he was really okay should have made Youyi happy, but her heart ached with each beat, and tears kept flowing uncontrollably.

The anxiety that had hung over her all day finally dissipated, and she felt a sense of relief, which made her cry even more after the immense worry.

It was complete, uncontrollable sobbing.

Even though he still had a strong odor, she didn’t care and held him tightly.

There was a touch of helplessness, but her heart was filled with love.

Fu Cheng didn’t try to stop her and let her cry as much as she needed.

That night, with few people on duty in the radiology department, Fu Cheng’s CT scan was delayed. Youyi stayed with him for the examination, and by the time the results came out, it was already seven in the morning.

The results showed nothing significant.

Youyi and her colleague took the day off and, after leaving the hospital, took a taxi home with Fu Cheng.

On the way home, Youyi remained silent.

Once they got home, Fu Cheng immediately stripped off his clothes and threw them into the trash.

His clothes were dirty, covered in blood and dirt, so they had to be discarded.

“I’m going to take a shower.” He headed to the bathroom.

Fu Cheng acted quickly. He simply rinsed off, removing the blood and sweat, and in less than five minutes, the sound of the shower stopped.

There was a knock at the door.

Fu Cheng said, “It’s not locked.”

Youyi opened the door.

She placed her underwear and bathrobe to the side, then stepped out and closed the door behind her.

She didn’t say a word.

Fu Cheng came out of the bathroom wearing a bathrobe loosely tied around him, his chest covered in water droplets, and his skin a bit darker from being outside.

The bouquet of roses on the table had wilted, with the edges of the petals dried out from lack of water.

The large house was filled with an eerie silence.

Youyi poured a glass of water and brought it to Fu Cheng, handing it to him.

His lips were chapped, clearly he hadn’t had a drink in a while.

Youyi noticed these details with great care.

Fu Cheng took the glass of water.

He was indeed very thirsty. He hadn’t realized it before, but now that he was home, he noticed he had not drunk any water all day.

After sweating all day, he hadn’t had a sip of water.

Fu Cheng tilted his head back and drank the entire glass in one go.

Youyi poured him another glass.

He finished that one too.

After three glasses of water, he finally felt somewhat relieved.

“Do you want to check it yourself?” Fu Cheng asked.

If she wasn’t at ease, she could check for herself.

Youyi’s eyes were still red, and her cheeks bore the traces of tears. After the fear had subsided, she felt a bit of anger.

She didn’t speak, and Fu Cheng pulled her hand.

The bathrobe belt was loosely tied, and when he pulled it, it came undone, revealing his toned waist and strong muscles. The familiar scent enveloped her.

This made her slightly feel her emptiness being filled again.

Fu Cheng said, “Look carefully. Are there any new injuries on me?”

He had several scars, and she knew them as well as he did. On some nights, he would count them one by one with her, telling her the story behind each scar before she fell asleep.

Including the longest one on his lower back.

It still looked like a fierce beast, quietly lingering on his back, with sharp claws and a low growl, but it was tender towards the lady in front of him.

There were no new injuries or signs of old wounds reappearing.

He was completely fine, just as he was when he left the house.

He held her hand, pressing it gently against his body, and whispered, “Now you can see, I’m really fine.”

He knew he had scared her, and the frightened little bunny hadn’t recovered yet.

She remained silent, even a bit angry with him.

Youyi sniffled.

“Do you know what I was thinking while we were at the hospital?”

She paused.

“I was thinking, if something really happened to you, would it mean I’d be left alone?”

That was the most pessimistic and cruel thought. In that moment, it flashed through her mind so quickly that its brief existence had already made her deeply upset.

“What if it were true?” Fu Cheng asked, following her lead.

Youyi looked up, not answering, her eyes reddening even more.

What if it were true?

Why entertain such a possibility?

The truth should be that such a thing would never happen in a lifetime.

Seeing her on the verge of tears again, Fu Cheng lifted her up, carried her to the sofa, and set her down so that she was facing him while sitting cross-legged on his lap.

“Fu Cheng, I can’t live without you now,” Youyi hugged his neck, “Do you know that?”

She couldn’t be separated from him in any way.

He had barged into her life forcefully, then rooted himself deeply, his presence seeping into her very being, blooming like vibrant daisies in her soil. If he were pulled out by the roots, that soil would be left in tatters.

Fu Cheng tightened his embrace.

“Do you know how strong your husband is?

Strong enough to lift her with one hand.

This was just a simple metaphor, but it was more than that.

It was real strength that commands fear.

“If you know, don’t think about impossible things.”

She was still so young, and they had just been married for a year. There was still a long, long time ahead; he couldn’t bear to part with her.

Youyi took a deep breath.

“So you still think you have a reason for going missing?”

She asked with a hint of anger, her voice no longer muffled but instead tinged with a delicate irritation.

Fu Cheng’s eyes, usually stern, softened as he noticed she was calming down. He tightened his embrace and said softly, “Of course there is a reason.”

He said this partly to tease her and partly to comfort her.

His hand patted her gently, causing a slight ache that tickled, and Youyi buried her head in his chest, softly refusing, “No more hitting.”

The ripples are rippling.

“Didn’t you miss me?” Fu Cheng paused, “I really liked what you said on the phone that day.”

The fear of a narrow escape needs to be replaced with another emotion to dissipate faster. He knew this, so he wanted her to forget it sooner.

Negative emotions don’t need to be remembered all the time.

Although he probably shouldn’t use the term “narrow escape.”

“What did I say?” Youyi didn’t remember.

“You said, ‘I love you the most.'” He clearly repeated, praising her, “I really liked hearing that.”

He wanted to come back immediately at that moment.

“We are actually the most compatible,” Fu Cheng said, “You like the way I do things, and I like the way you do.”

“Baby, don’t you think so?”

No one in the world is more suited to be with each other than they are.

Youyi lightly brushed her fingers over his lips. After drinking a few cups of water, the chapped skin on his lips had softened a lot. She nodded and answered, “Yes.”

Fu Cheng said, “If it were possible, I would give my life into your hands.”

From now on, matters of life and death would be handled by her.

Youyi looked up into his eyes.

His eyes were always so dark. She had never fully understood them, only knowing that in their reflection, there was her.

“I’ve always thought of you as a mountain,” Youyi said, resting her arm on his shoulder, her soft skin touching his broad arm, “Mountains never fall.”

Fu Cheng paused for a moment.

“They do sometimes,” he said.

Well, let’s leave it at that.

She didn’t want to continue discussing mountains.

After all, the mountain was right here; even the Foolish Old Man couldn’t move it in his lifetime.

That day, Youyi told him how much she missed him during his absence. Not being able to sleep was the least of her worries. She missed him to the point of pain.

She took out their marriage certificate and thought it was a treasure of sorts.

Fu Cheng trapped her wrists with one hand, pushing her arms behind her back, and kissed her with a forceful yet controlled posture.

“Baby, you need to say it yourself… okay?”

“Okay,” Youyi answered vaguely.

After a long while.

Fu Cheng’s arms grew heavier, reflecting his muscle weight. He whispered in her ear, suddenly serious—

“Youyou, I’m going to get a vasectomy.”

*

The early summer night still held a hint of coolness.

Outside on the balcony, the river flowed quietly in the night. After her bath, Youyi’s hair was still damp. Fu Cheng’s hand ran through her hair, and with a warm breeze from the hairdryer, he slowly dried her hair.

The warm air carried the heat from his palm, brushing against her cheeks.

His fierceness and tenderness coexisted in countless details and moments in life.

Youyi was most enchanted by this contrast.

The most opposite sides of him.

A beast that could be fierce when needed but also gentle, licking its sharp claws, leaving no mercy when fierce and the utmost tenderness when gentle.

That was Fu Cheng.

The warmest and most ordinary moments in life were when she could clearly sense that he was right there beside her, with his heart beating vividly, making it feel like the happiest thing in the world.

With you, with me, and with this home.

A year ago, who would have thought that Youyi would have a home like this?

From the first year we met, when she handed him a strawberry cake, the young girl simply wanted to make him happy by giving him her favorite thing.

Later, on a snowy day, she was like a pure angel, bringing him warmth within her ability, offering her greatest kindness.

Last year, she finally opened her heart, giving him everything she had.

Including herself.

And thus, they have their present.

This is a love that belongs exclusively to Fu Cheng and Ding Youyi.

His hand is still holding her hair, the ends damp but slowly drying. His fingertips brush along her cheek, and as he looks down, all he sees is Ding Youyi.

“Is this okay?” he asks.

He’s asking if the way he’s drying her hair is acceptable.

Whether the words he said earlier are still okay.

Youyi’s lips move slightly.

“It’s okay.”

We can stay together forever, giving you all the joy and comfort. If you’re willing, then forever, it will just be us.

Life should be this way.

We please ourselves, then love others, and also bring joy to those we love.

Just remember—

I will always love you the most.

Wait, what? Vasectomy? I know some people don’t want children but this unilateral decision seemed to come out of nowhere and without any obvious foreshadowing. It was such a sudden announcement. In fact, the lead up conversation seemed to be going in the opposite direction?? Family and friends are important connections that can help dilute a serious loss and the girl had literally just admitted that she wouldn’t have anything to live for if he died. They are a couple without any real family and what little other family she has is likely to riot at the thought of her not fulfilling their stepford wife dreams. I am not saying children are the answer or that they should be born specifically for such a reason, but something about the way that played out feels weird. What an odd detail to insert into the final chapter.

“I feel super dependent on you to the point I would die if you died.”
“Oh that doesn’t sound good babe… I have decided! I am going to cut off possibilities of future descendants.”

It was not as exaggerated as this, but there was the same feeling of disconnect. Like how does one relate to another??? The only potential build-up to this was the talk of buying her favorite condoms later. What, is her favorite condom no condom? 😂

I am not against a vasectomy. It is a minor and usually reversible procedure. However, a decision to have children or not is generally a joint decision between a couple. Not an “omg you bled from your womb in front of me once and without consulting with a specialist I think it must mean having children is a bad idea.” Not that he gave that reason or any reason at all. I know he must know on some level that it is what she wants too considering his personality and the way the couple gets along, but I clearly missed the hint.

Was there a foreshadowing to this that I had missed? It would make much more sense if he had determined to do his hand surgery. THAT procedure did have buildup and foreshadowing and actual substance worthy of a finale.
