Chapter 5: He Is My Man!
He saved her, and she blamed him in return?
Brother Gu Ye’s handsome face turned blue with anger. Just now, he had suspected that Sister Jiang Yue might have had something wrong with her head—only that could explain why she was acting so differently from usual. Now, ha! As expected, it was still the same unreasonable style of Jiang Yue!
“When did I ever say you had a terminal illness?” he demanded. Besides, he had barely spoken two sentences since entering the room!
Jiang Yue did not notice Brother Gu Ye’s expression. She continued wiping her tears as she spoke. “Wasn’t it you who touched my head, asked me if I felt uncomfortable anywhere, and told me if there was anything wrong, I must speak up!”
“And so?” Brother Gu Ye had a full line of black on his forehead. “I merely asked if you felt unwell. Did I ever mention the words terminal illness?”
“Huh?” Jiang Yue’s tears stopped abruptly. Her large eyes lit up in an instant, and she eagerly grabbed Brother Gu Ye’s big hand. With a face full of hope, she asked: “So I don’t have a terminal illness? I’m not going to die?”
Once again, Jiang Yue had grabbed his hand. Brother Gu Ye only felt a numbness spreading from his palm to his arm. This sensation was entirely unfamiliar to him.
He tried to pull his hand back, but failed. He could only endure the impatient itch, stiffly looking away as he focused himself to answer: “No! You won’t!”
In that moment, everything changed. Jiang Yue was so excited that she completely forgot this was the 1970s. She jumped up and threw her arms around Brother Gu Ye’s neck. “Ahhh! I’m not going to die! This is wonderful!”
Now not only were Brother Gu Ye’s hands and arms numb, even his neck and half his body had gone numb. Especially the areas where Jiang Yue had touched—his muscles had all stiffened.
What was wrong with this woman? Before, she had avoided him like he was a poisonous snake. They had never even held hands. But today, she was acting so strangely—kissing him and hugging him?
Brother Gu Ye, always known for his calmness, was stunned for a few seconds before he came back to his senses. His expression immediately changed, and he grabbed Jiang Yue’s wrist and pushed her away.
“Jiang Yue!” Brother Gu Ye scolded in a low voice. He was just about to reprimand her for her improper conduct when he saw her let out a muffled groan, clutch her head, and fall backward.
Brother Gu Ye reacted swiftly, catching her in his arms. “Where does it hurt?”
“My head hurts so much!” Jiang Yue felt a bout of dizziness and nausea, as if someone were hammering inside her skull. Her temples throbbed uncontrollably.
“Lie down first. I’ll go get the doctor!” Brother Gu Ye helped Jiang Yue lie down and then quickly left the room.
Jiang Yue heard murmuring voices beside her ear. She vaguely made out someone talking about that Comrade soldier, blah blah blah, but she couldn’t hear clearly what was actually being said.
A short while later, Brother Gu Ye returned with a doctor.
“Comrade Gu, your Wife is not in any serious danger. It’s mainly due to Malnutrition and Weakened immunity. She caught a chill after falling in the water, which is why she feels unwell. Let her rest more and drink plenty of hot water. I’ll prescribe some cold medicine just in case.” the doctor said to Brother Gu Ye after completing his examination.
When Jiang Yue heard the doctor say that she wasn’t in serious danger, her heart finally settled. Thank goodness, thank goodness. As long as it wasn’t a terminal illness and she wasn’t going to die, that was all that mattered!
“However—” the doctor paused at that moment.
Jiang Yue’s heart, which had just relaxed, immediately jumped into her throat again. She stared at the doctor in fear. “However what? Doctor, is there something wrong with me?”
Indeed, patients were always most terrified when doctors hesitated. Jiang Yue’s voice trembled, and she tightly gripped the blanket with both hands, afraid of hearing anything bad from the doctor.
Gu Ye glanced at Jiang Yue and then asked the doctor in a low voice: “Doctor Wang, speak plainly!”
The doctor flipped through Jiang Yue’s eyelids, used a flashlight to check her pupils, and then pointed to the large bump on her forehead. “Comrade, this bump on your forehead… did you hit it against something? From the severity of the injury, it seems you were hit pretty hard.”
Jiang Yue instinctively reached to touch the bump on her forehead, but her hand was immediately stopped by Gu Ye.
“Don’t touch it!” Gu Ye said softly.
“Comrade Gu, your wife seems to have hit her head, and there is a possibility of a concussion. It would be best to get a CT scan to check for any brain damage or internal bleeding. However—”
As soon as Jiang Yue heard the doctor say “however.” the corner of her mouth twitched. She hadn’t even realized that her hand was still being held by Gu Ye.
“However, what?” Gu Ye asked.
The doctor looked up at Gu Ye and replied: “However, at present, only two hospitals in the capital city and Haicheng have CT equipment. Our hospital does not, so we are unable to perform this examination.”
Upon hearing that there was a possibility of brain damage or internal bleeding, Jiang Yue immediately grew anxious and asked: “If I don’t get the check-up, will it delay the condition? Will I die?”
The doctor smiled and reassured her: “Comrade, there’s no need to worry so much. Not everyone who hits their head dies. I can see you’re still in good spirits, so the situation shouldn’t be severe. If you’re still worried, you can stay in the hospital for a few more days to be observed.”
Jiang Yue immediately looked at Gu Ye. He seemed to hesitate for a moment, but then he said: “Then stay for a few more days.”
Jiang Yue sighed in relief. However, after thinking for a moment, she said: “I don’t want to stay in the hospital. I want to go home!”
“Go home?” Upon hearing this, Gu Ye looked at Jiang Yue, his handsome face full of sarcasm. “Which home do you want to go back to? The Ji family’s home?”
Jiang Yue’s heart sank. The letter left by the Original Owner didn’t mention the Ji family at all. It only said she was to find her biological parents. How did Gu Ye know about it?
In a moment of distraction, Jiang Yue quickly said: “Of course, I want to go back to our own home!”
“You’ve always said that’s not your home!” Gu Ye sneered, clearly not believing Jiang Yue’s words.
Jiang Yue knew this was the mess left by the Original Owner. Ever since she had married Gu Ye and moved into the Family Residential Compound, the Original Owner had been constantly arguing and demanding a divorce, wanting to move out.
“That was before, but now it’s different!”
“How is it different?” Gu Ye’s sarcasm deepened, his lips curling even further.
Jiang Yue noticed that the people in the same ward had all turned their ears in their direction. Her lips twitched—this was the Flower-planting Country’s tradition: no matter the era, people were always especially interested in gossip!
“Ningning is still at home. If I stay in the hospital, who will take care of her? It’s inconvenient for you to run around back and forth! Didn’t the doctor just say the situation isn’t serious? I can rest at home just the same!” Jiang Yue tugged at Gu Ye’s sleeve, not wanting to continue discussing this topic.
Ningning was the name of Gu Ye’s adopted daughter.
At her words, Gu Ye’s brows furrowed even more, his gaze becoming even sharper, with an undercurrent of disgust.
Jiang Yue instinctively shrank back, avoiding Gu Ye’s eyes.
It was no wonder Jiang Yue felt guilty. After marrying Gu Ye, the Original Owner had never taken care of Ningning. The Original Owner didn’t like children, and especially disliked Gu Ye’s child. She often treated Ningning poorly.
The Original Owner was truly both foolish and malicious. When she went to the Provincial Capital to search for her biological parents, she had even given Ningning alcohol, getting the three-year-old girl drunk before running off herself.
This was why, after being kicked out by the Ji family, the Original Owner didn’t dare to go back. She feared Gu Ye would hold her accountable. To her surprise, Gu Ye found her and just so happened to rescue her when she fell into the lake.
Gu Ye remained silent for a moment before he finally said in a low voice: “Stay for one night. We’ll see how things go tomorrow.”
Jiang Yue could feel Gu Ye’s cold attitude towards her, but she still puffed up her cheeks and said: “But Gu Ye, it’s so noisy here, I can’t even rest properly!”
Jiang Yue was terrified of many things, but the one thing she feared more than anything was noise.
This was an eight-person ward. Aside from her, the other beds were occupied by people, and with the patients and their families, there were over a dozen people in the room. There were no curtains between the beds, so there was no privacy at all.
Moreover, those people kept staring at her and Gu Ye, which made Jiang Yue feel completely uncomfortable.
Gu Ye glanced around. The room was indeed too noisy, crowded like a market, and definitely not a place for rest and recuperation.
“Wait here for a moment!” Gu Ye stood up and walked out.
Jiang Yue watched Gu Ye’s tall, straight figure disappear out the door, and just then, she heard someone speaking to her.
“Little girl, that Comrade soldier, what is he to you?”
The voice belonged to a young woman with an accent, and she was in the bed next to Jiang Yue.
Jiang Yue smiled and said: “He’s my hubby!”
“Hubby? What’s that?” The woman was confused.
“Husbby is just husband.” Jiang Yue slightly pursed her lips, and from the corner of her eye, she saw a figure stop in the doorway. With a smile, she added: “He’s my man!”
