Chapter 6: If I Had Known, I Wouldn’t Have Pushed Myself

The woman displayed an expression of both envy and jealousy, her tone tinged with acidity. “Your husband treats you so well! When he brought you here, you were unconscious. He was the one running back and forth taking care of you, even buying you food.”

Jiang Yue’s smile became a bit stiff as she thought to herself, isn’t it normal for a husband to take care of his sick wife? But then she reconsidered. Her relationship with Gu Ye wasn’t a typical husband-and-wife relationship.

Jiang Yue looked up and saw that Gu Ye had returned at some point. He was standing by her bedside, watching her.

“The private rooms in the hospital are all full. There’s only a three-person room left. You should consider it.”

Hearing Gu Ye’s words, Jiang Yue immediately looked at him with a strange expression. “You just went out to inquire about switching to a different ward?”

Wasn’t it said that Gu Ye hated the original wife? Yet here he was, acting like he cared about her?

“Mm!” Gu Ye seemed unwilling to say more, simply fixing his deep gaze on Jiang Yue. It looked like he was waiting for her to make a decision.

Without thinking, Jiang Yue shook her head. “A three-person room is noisy! I don’t want to stay there!”

Jiang Yue tilted her head to look at Gu Ye. His handsome face remained unchanged, and he turned to leave again.

Since Jiang Yue had woken up, the woman had been sitting at the foot of the bed, hunched over and looking uncomfortable, while the man lying in the bed kept asking her to fetch this and that. If the nurse hadn’t come in to deliver medicine to the woman, Jiang Yue would have thought the man was the one who was sick.

In comparison, Gu Ye really was quite a good man!

When Gu Ye returned after completing the discharge procedures, Jiang Yue had already packed up.

“We can leave now!”

By the time they reached the Family Residential Compound of the 179th Division, it was already evening. When Jiang Yue got out of the car, her complexion was even worse than the woman in the bed next to hers at the hospital. She felt like her feet were stepping on cotton.

If she had known the ride back would be this bumpy, she would have stayed at the hospital for a few more days, taken better care of herself, and avoided vomiting all the way back.

“Get on!” Seeing that Jiang Yue was unsteady on her feet, Gu Ye walked over and offered to carry her.

This time, Jiang Yue didn’t refuse and just leaned onto Gu Ye’s broad back. However, her stomach felt awful, and her head was spinning, leaving her with no thoughts beyond that discomfort.

Once they entered the house, Jiang Yue collapsed into bed and immediately fell into a deep sleep.

Gu Ye glanced at her, closed the door quietly, and left.

The driver, Zhang Jianguo, hadn’t left yet. “Regiment Commander Gu, is your wife okay? Why didn’t she stay a few more days at the Provincial Capital Hospital?”

Gu Ye remained silent for a moment before replying: “She refused to stay and insisted on coming back herself.”

Gu Ye actually found it strange. Jiang Yue was usually delicate and picky. She always thought the conditions at the Family Residential Compound were poor and would run to the city whenever she had a chance. Today, for the first time ever, she had taken the initiative to come back. He guessed she must have hit her head and wasn’t thinking clearly.

Jiang Yue didn’t wake up until the next morning. Even though she had already accepted her new identity, when she first opened her eyes, she was in a daze for quite some time.

She heard voices coming from outside the room. Jiang Yue got out of bed and first took a look at her surroundings.

The room was quite spacious, at least the area where she slept was large. There was a double bed, a wardrobe with a mirror, a five-drawer chest, a bookshelf, and two bedside tables by the bed. There was also a desk and a chair by the window.

Jiang Yue picked up the tin of snowflake cream on the desk and sniffed it. It smelled of the rich, old-fashioned fragrance she remembered from when she used to smell it on her grandmother when she was little.

Just as Jiang Yue was about to continue checking the room, a timid child’s voice suddenly called out.

“Dad, Mom’s awake!”
