Dazai didn’t bring Hyakki back to the port headquarters of the Mafia but instead went to the original clinic. Dr. Mori was dressed in a white coat, sitting behind his desk, vigorously writing, planning one thing after another.
Upon hearing the sound of their return, Dr. Mori turned his chair around, fingers interlocked, resting on his knees, and said expectantly, “Dazai, it’s been a while since you’ve come to see me here.”
Dazai dragged the unwilling Hyakki inside and closed the door behind him.
“You still haven’t given me the information about the ability users who need treatment.”
“It’s about that matter.”
Dr. Mori pointed to his thigh, and the one strand of hair sticking up from his forehead made him look somewhat younger.
Under Dazai’s indifferent gaze, he said calmly, “Her name is Yosano Akiko, with the ability ‘please don’t die.’ She can save dying patients in critical condition in one go. In terms of healing abilities, Ms. Yosano is undoubtedly a ‘death angel.'”
Dazai continued, “Her whereabouts?”
Dr. Mori opened a drawer and handed him a prepared list, saying, “I’ll trouble you to take care of these people for me, and then I’ll tell you where that ability user is.”
Dazai remained silent.
Hyakki’s sixth sense reminded him: the person in front of them had ill intentions.
Once again, the golden-haired girl stood in front of Dr. Mori. Hyakki’s sword edge was halfway out, but Dazai intercepted and pushed it back, saying to Dr. Mori, “This was the condition we agreed upon earlier. I’m not obligated to do anything extra for you, Mr. Leader of the Port Mafia.”
Dr. Mori smiled knowingly. “Dazai, do you know what ‘optimal solution’ means?”
“It’s the ideal solution where both the main goal and sub-goals can be achieved without sacrificing any objectives,” Dazai answered fluently. “However, such solutions are rarely found in practice.”
Dr. Mori stated his purpose, “I’d like to invite you to join the Port Mafia.”
Dazai glanced at the unheard Hyakki and shrugged. “I’m not interested at the moment.”
Dr. Mori nodded. “Yes, for now…” His eyes, at certain angles, were red rather than purple, giving off a demonic, inorganic gaze directed at Dazai. “You will be interested sooner or later.”
Hyakki suddenly tightened his grip on Dazai’s hand, pulling him behind himself.
The tip of the sword stabbed into the ground, forming a word.
【Leave!】
Dr. Mori’s pupils tightened as he focused on Hyakki, deflecting Dazai’s question, “Hyakki, I was mistaken in my analysis of you. You understand words, what an excellent learning talent.”
He couldn’t help but applaud, addressing both Dazai and Hyakki, “Honestly, I’m truly impressed.”
The refracted light from shattered diamonds was even more intense than that of the original gemstone, undoubtedly captivating in its entirety.
He tore up the list he had written, boldly retracting his previous stance, tossing it into the nearby shredder. Standing up, he casually inserted one hand into his pocket, exuding the charm of a mature man amidst his unkempt appearance.
“Well then, feel free to find good doctors, and I’ll provide the intelligence.”
“But there is one condition…”
Dr. Mori raised his index finger to his lips, as if indicating an insurmountable restriction. “Until this agreement becomes null and void, you are not to join the Port Mafia or any other organization. My clinic will always welcome you and protect you from interference by other forces. How about it?”
This agreement was tempting, and Dazai felt tempted. However, before taking action, he carefully observed Hyakki.
【Do not trust this person!】
Hyakki held onto his hand tightly, not loosening his grip.
Remain vigilant!
Dazai closed his eyes in contemplation, then opened them and said, “The information exchange can continue, but I don’t accept your other conditions. If I need anything, I’ll contact you again.”
Dr. Mori expressed disappointment. “Dazai, you’re clearly tempted.”
Dazai chuckled. “Well, sometimes you just have to trust your instincts. Coincidentally, Hyakki’s instincts are quite sharp, making me feel like you’re plotting something behind my back…”
With a firm tone, for the first time, the younger one gave Dr. Mori a slight chill.
“You’re worried too.”
“Don’t worry. As long as I’m alive, every day I’ll prove the former leader’s testament for you. If you ever decide to go back on your word and try to kill me, just remember to give me a painless and swift way out.”
Lowering his head, Dazai smiled in the shadows, enunciating each word deliberately.
“Otherwise…”
“Beware the ghost knocking at your door in the middle of the night.”
This ‘ghost’ could be a demon, a monster, or someone capable of slaying all manner of evils…
…
After Dazai took away two boxes of instant noodles, syringes, rabies vaccines, several bandages, and other supplies for about half an hour…
Dr. Mori slumped despondently in his chair, lamenting to his ability, “Alice, am I not fit to be the leader? The Port Mafia is in chaos internally, only a third are willing to surrender. We lack manpower, we lack weapons. At this rate, I’ll die from overwork.”
The golden-haired girl, nibbling on cake, gave an ambiguous response.
“Diamonds are always precious, aren’t they?”
She toyed with her fork, sharing Dr. Mori’s line of thought but harboring a sweet disdain for him as a humanoid ability user. “Isn’t it more interesting to dig up the diamonds that the teacher admires?”
These two wouldn’t use them for themselves, and they definitely couldn’t let others get hold of them.
For example…
The Special Ability Department and Fukuzawa Yukichi, who worked as a bodyguard outside.
Natsume Soseki had two disciples, Fukuzawa Yukichi and Dr. Mori. Compared to Fukuzawa Yukichi, who had been accumulating contacts and foundations, Dr. Mori had taken a big step ahead, aiming for the goal of the “Three-Fourths Concept.” With control over the Port Mafia’s resources, he was working hard to salvage the sinking ship of the Port Mafia and naturally remained wary of another person who might try to usurp his position.
Human resources were crucial; one Dazai and one Hyakki could substitute for countless others!
On the other side, Fukuzawa Yukichi had been sailing smoothly recently, evidenced by his increasingly gentle demeanor, shedding his former icy reputation as the “Silver Wolf.” Ever since he took pity on a remarkably intelligent young man and lent a helping hand, the youth had stuck to him like glue, becoming his partner.
Over the years, he became more convinced that his decision was right. Helping the weak, protecting civilians, and maintaining order—those tasks unsuitable for the military and police were exactly what suited him.
The only headache was that Ranpo Edogawa couldn’t go out alone, Fukuzawa often had to accompany him.
With numerous successful cases solved, under the pseudonym of a detective, Ranpo Edogawa now wore the black-framed glasses given by Fukuzawa. Thanks to the psychological effect of returning home, he no longer despised the mundane thoughts of ordinary people.
Mr. Fukuzawa once said,
“The power to see through everything is an ability, and it should be used for doing good deeds.”
But what constitutes a good deed…
At this moment, Fukuzawa Yukichi and Ranpo Edogawa had just returned to Yokohama, and it was over…
