Chapter 16

“Hmph! Hmph! Hmph!”

While I was teaching these two about magic, the other two boys were being trained by Alaine-san. The boy with the sword was practicing swinging his sword with Alaine-san watching him and the boy with heavy armor was being taught by Alaine-san on how to maintain his armor. 

The merchant was looking at this scene with a warm gaze on his eyes while Alaine-san was staring at me heavily and intensely as I taught the girls. 

……. Can you please stop swinging your sword in my direction sometimes, Alaine-san?

“Shall we go to sleep soon?”

I muttered, looking at the sky that was turning dark. It should be about time for us to go to sleep. The merchant was already preparing to sleep too. 

“I’ll be in charge of the night shift. I think between all of us, I’m the one most compatible to do so.”

I said to everyone.

“Hm. I will leave it to you.”

“Huh? By yourself?”

Alaine-san nodded at my words while the magician girl had a question mark floating on top of her head. 

“But I was taught that you need at least 2 people for the night watch?”

The boy with the sword told me that clearly as he looked at me. 

“That’s right. Generally, two people would be better for the job but I’m an exception. I have a convenient magic up my sleeve so just one person is enough for the night watch.”

“I-I see….”

The four adventurers nodded in agreement at my reply. 

“Everyone, feel free to have a good night’s sleep. I will take care of the rest myself.”

Rustle rustle

Chirp chirp

The sound of the plants rustling and the sound of bird chirping could be heard. The moon and various stars were shining in the sky. I could see the flower lying on the peak of the mountain floating in the sky from here. 

I outstretched my hand toward the sky.

Maybe Earth is between those stars? My mother, father, friends and that girl…. I wonder what they’re doing now? 

“Phew~”

I took a breath as I stared at the world. The sleepiness was so severe that I could fall asleep if I was careless even just for a little bit. But…. I couldn’t sleep. I had the night shift and more importantly, I’d just have a nightmare if I went to sleep and woke up with a jolt. 

I’d only ended up losing my energy unnecessarily. 

“……….”

I concentrated so I wouldn’t fall asleep. In between my perception, I could catch the movement of the small animals with perception magic and grasped the movement of the insects. There wasn’t any monster in range….. Even monsters have intelligence to some extent. If we were talking about the instinct to sense danger, monsters had a sharper instinct about that. 

They wouldn’t dare going to a place where me and Alaine-san were. The two of us were basically monsters and we didn’t do anything in particular to hide our power either.

“Phew…”

It’d be more comfortable for me if at least a monster showed up. 

And so, I had to spend another long and lonely night again.
