Chapter 17

“Thank you very much.”

I bowed to the merchant before we parted. I also did the same with the other 4 adventurers. Apparently the four adventurers had someone they needed to greet in this town so they went to meet that person before going to the adventurers’ guild. Because of that, me and Alaine-san parted with everyone and went to the adventurers’ guild with just the two of us. 

“The accomplishment for the request… I’ve confirmed it. Thank you for your hard work.”

“Yes.”

Me and Alaine-san received the money for finishing the request and then we left the receptionist. After that, me and Alaine-san went to the bulletin board where they posted the request paper at. 

“Which request should we take? …. How about if we take the big quest while we’re here so we can earn a lot of money?”

“Hm… I guess so.”

Alaine-san looked like she was thinking for a bit before she then turned to face me. 

“Zero, what about you?”

“What about… Me?”

“Yeah, that’s right. We’re no longer in a superior and subordinate relationship. We are now standing on equal footing. You don’t need to use honorifics with me…… I don’t mind if you call me Alaine.”

“……. I see. I understand. Then from now on I will stop using honorifics and just call you Alaine. As for me, I want to take on a big request here so things can get easy for us later on.”

I conveyed my opinion to Alaine but… For some reason, Alaine was turning her head away from me.

…..Alaine?

“Huh? What? What is it?”

“………..Wait a minute.”

“O-Okay?”

Alaine said that to me

Well, I don’t really know why but for the time being, I should just follow along with her lead. 

“Okay. I’m fine now. The big request. Let’s take it. Okay.”

Alaine agreed with my opinion. 

…..Just what happened?

“Which one should we do?”

“Let’s see….”

I looked at the bulletin board. There were a lot of request papers posted on the bulletin board. 

“What about this one?”

Alaine pointed to one of the papers. On that paper, it was written the hardest request amongst all the other requests posted on the bulletin board. It was a request to kill an ancient dragon.

“Fine I guess? The reward money is pretty big and besides, I also want to try fighting an ancient dragon.”

I voiced my agreement to Alaine’s words.

Ancient dragon. It was an existence I had heard about when I just recently joined the knight. One of Alaine’s former knight captains fought the ancient dragon and was defeated. The captain was killed on duty. 

Although Alaine was not the captain anymore, this might have served as a good chance for us to recover the knight’s name. We couldn’t fight against the ancient dragon when we were serving as a knight because the top brass of the kingdom had requested that we shouldn’t do it. 

Me and Alaine peeled the request paper off and went back to the receptionist from before again.
